Recalling the incident, Baba said he met Rahman and director Mani Ratnam during one of his shows in Chennai. The duo was exploring the release of Roja's Hindi music album, and Baba initiated his connection with record label Magnasound. However, Baba imposed a condition during the negotiations, stating that he would sing at least one song from Roja's Hindi album, regardless of whether it was well received or not.
“I told them that I will sing at least one song, whether they like it or not. So I sang a song and that was the first and last song I sang for Rahman,” revealed Baba, referring to the popular track “Rukmani Rukmani”.
Despite initial shock at the song's “kameene type ke” lyrics, Baba went ahead with the recording as the record company insisted. To this day, he uses remix versions of “Rukmani Rukmani” in his shows, reflecting on the memorable yet singular collaboration with AR Rahman.
