From "A Paper Life" by Tatum O'Neal: "It was at this point that my father threw a script at me and said, 'You could do this piece of shit movie.'" And that's how we got "Circle of Two."
An icky TV movie DIRECTED BY JULES DASSIN (!) that has the gall to pair Sir Richard Burton and Oscar winning child star Tatum O’Neal. The premise would be eyebrow-raising though certainly not unheard of, but the groaning, sunny-clumsy attempt at romanticizing the central relationship makes it a painful experience. It feels like a Very Special Episode of Tatum’s non-existent TV show with an unfortunate guest star… until the heroine is violently sexually assaulted by another random character, and then it’s just a whole thing.
The script is dreadful, and sadly so is Tatum O’Neal, whose chemistry with and longing for Burton never feels remotely true. Remarkably, Burton is VERY good as the older, depressed artist and object of affection,…
I N T E N S E
At one point Burton goes to pour a bottle of wine and has to steady himself to stop his hands from shaking. He was 56 and would be dead in less than 5 years. This film serves only as a document that charts his downfall from one of the stage and screen’s greatest actors to this nadir.
A film about an unconvincing love - I couldn't see how the 60 year old artist in the film (played by Richard Burton, who must have been 54 when the film was made if Tatum O'Neal was 16) would have fallen in love, rather than in lust, with a 15/16 year old school girl (played by O'Neal). Burton was pretty good as the tired painter who hadn't painted for ten years, but O'Neal's character, her schoolfriends and her parents just didn't seem right. Bit of a waste of Burton's talent.
I'm sorry but Sarah is so me. I perfectly understood her lol
Ashley on the other hand, made some questionable choices, I can't deny it, but I was really glad to see that he acknowledged it at the end.
Overall, I'd say that the movie managed to touch this argument in a very tasteful way. Especially considering that this came out in the 80s.
First movie of 2023 🎉
Teenage girl goes on hunger strike bc her parents wont let her bone a 60 year old man. What a way to start the year
A very strange film. Richard Burton plays a painter who hasn't been near a canvas for years, until he meets teenage muse Tatum O'Neal. He's sixty years old, she is sixteen, and yet a love story develops between them.
It's a tribute to Burton's talent (even if rather wasted here) that this story does not come across as unsavoury - I'd compare it in some ways to Venus, and Guinevere. both of which featured relationships of various types between an older man and a younger girl.
Tatum O'Neal had been a fine child actress, but lacked the maturity and finesse for a difficult role like this. She's the weakest link in this interesting, but ultimately disappointing odd romance.
“the most beautiful sounds in the english language are the names of flowers”
richard burton in the 80s makes me feral
Kann ich nachvollziehen, wie man sich mit 16 Jahren in einen deutlich älteren Richard Burton verlieben kann?
Absolut ja.
Habe ich verstanden, was eine platonische Romanze zu sein hat?
Absolut nein.
If Richard Burton ever confessed his love for me I think I’d spontaneously combust that man can get it
#17 movie Around the World in 80 Movies - Canada
I wouldn't call this the swan song of Jules Dassin, but it was the last movie he directed. A swan song implies something beautiful, and this was sadly rather bland and without much to offer on the subject. It doesn't make it any better that the once acknowledged noir-director have very little greatness injected into this. I did enjoy the studio, but the filming didn't really elevate much here.
Older male-younger female relationships are often portrayed in art, and many writes a lot of them off as male fantasies... whether just for the voyeurism of it, or for the creepiness actors or director take in making them. The same can…
