Meme stocks are flying this week. The re-emergence of the Roaring Kitty—his real name is Keith Gill—is a big reason why.

Gill’s trades and social-media posts drove investors toward shares of GameStop, the embattled video-game retailer, in 2021, part of a meme-stock moment that as of this morning appears to be back: An account associated with Gill on the social-media site X, which had gone quiet, this week began posting video clips that have inspired runups in shares of GameStop, AMC Networks and other meme-trader favorites.

Gill, known as “DeepF—ingValue” on Reddit's WallStreetBets forum, worked in marketing for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance. He has said he began investing in GameStop in 2019.

He was once a headband-sporting track star who was featured in in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd section.

Gill has made some big trades in GameStop shares. In 2021, he showed The Wall Street Journal screenshots of his brokerage account that on one day showed a roughly $20 million daily gain—and another that showed about a $15 million loss.

Actor Paul Dano portrayed him in the 2023 motion picture “Dumb Money.” Here’s a look at some of the ways that story differed from what really happened.
