What Are Heated Mirrors?

2020 Subaru Outback heated mirror.

Heated mirrors use a heating element similar to those used for rear window defrosters to melt snow and ice from your side mirror, helping maintain visibility. They eliminate the need to scrape your exterior side mirrors.

In some cases, the mirrors activate automatically once the temperature drops to a certain level, usually 40 degrees Fahrenheit. However, most activate by pushing the button that turns on the rear window defroster or a separate button with a heated mirror icon.

A small light mounted in the mirror will often illuminate, letting you know the heater is on. The mirrors typically employ a timer, shutting off automatically after being on for a few minutes.

You can tell if your vehicle has them by looking at your vehicle’s mirror. Heated mirrors feature a symbol resembling a box with three squiggly lines protruding through the bottom of the box. It will light up when turned on.

Most vehicles with heated mirrors get them from the factory; however, you can buy aftermarket versions. Prices typically begin in the $40 range, although do-it-yourself kits sell for as little as $12; however, they don’t enjoy positive reviews. If your factory-installed mirror stops working, replacements begin for as little as $40.
