Chaps Claim First NCAA Postseason Point, But Fall in Regionals

Pablo Segura Closes Season On 12-Match Win Streak In Singles

TYLER, Texas (May 13, 2024) – No.4-seeded No.38 Lubbock Christian University claimed their first NCAA postseason point, but was unable to claim their first NCAA postseason victory, as the Chaparrals had their season end with a 4-1 loss at No.1-seed No.14 UT Tyler in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional at Summers Tennis Center.

The point was collected in No.4-singles by freshman Pablo Segura, who closes out an epic freshman campaign. The 6-1, 6-2 straight-set win by Segura closed LCU's deficit to 2-1, but No.1-singles and No.5-singles matches were instantly claimed by UT Tyler, ending the postseason dual in "clinch" for the Patriots.

All three of the doubles matches were tightly played to open the dual. No.49 nationally ranked LCU doubles team of Martins Abamu / Tristan Vigneron were edged 6-4 by No.17 Daniil Felker / Egor Shestakov in No.1 singles, as the Patriots took the first doubles match to finish. LCU's Mattia Ghedin / Blas Ruiz Romero were in a tiebreaker in No.3-doubles, but their match was never completed, as UT Tyler, with the No.48 nationally ranked team of Joaquin Bianchi / Carel Wessel, claiming a clinching doubles win in the No2-doubles match to take the doubles point for a 1-0 dual lead.

The Patriots increased their lead to 2-0 opening singles play with a win in No.6-singles. Segura was originally scheduled at the No.5-singles spot, but prior to singles play, he was shifted into the No.4-singles spot and claimed LCU's first and only point of the match.

Segura's win helped him close the season on a 12-match win streak in singles play. The stretch includes an 8-0 record in singles matches played in Lone Star Conference duals. He went 27-5 in singles play overall this season and the 27 wins marks a single-season program mark. The mark topped Abamu's 21-win season from last season. Abamu, who played in his final match Monday, ends the season with a 19-14 singles record and 16-9 doubles record and leaves LCU with a 40-22 career mark in singles and 30-18 career record in doubles. The two-time ITA Cup qualifier is the lone Chap to achieve 40 career wins in singles and 30 wins in doubles.

LCU closes their season with an 18-7 overall record. A six-win improvement over a 12-win season from last season. The Chaps, receiving ITA national ranking tags this season for the first time in program history, unfortunately fell to 0-2 all-time in NCAA postseason play. Last season, their first season of competition in NCAA Division II play, LCU qualified for the NCAA Div. II South Central Regional and fell 4-0 at Cameron.
