The Big Picture

  • First project in new DC universe is Creature Commandos with behind-the-scenes footage at upcoming Annecy festival.
  • Creative team, including Rick Morales and Balak Yves, to showcase a brand-new animated series at the convention.
  • Creature Commandos, a DC super-team akin to Suicide Squad with Universal Monster themes, is led by Amanda Waller.

The first project in James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC universe is arriving soon, with Creature Commandos set to get a deep-dive look with behind-the-scenes footage this upcoming June. As announced by Warner Bros. Discovery, the company's line-up for the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival will prominently feature the animated superhero show with a "Making-Of Session", giving fans a mere taste of what Gunn and Safraan have in store. WBD has also revealed that animation enthusiasts can also expect to see Lord of the Rings: The Waar of the Rohirrim and The Amazing World of Gumball reboot at the fest.

Several of the creative team members of Creature Commandos will be present at the upcoming convention. This includes supervising producer Rick Morales and supervising director Balak Yves. Together, Morales and Yves will host what isn't just the first look at a brand-new animated series, but also a first look at James Gunn and Peter Safran's vision for a shared cinematic universe. The show is set to release later this year, meaning Creature Commandos will pre-date James Gunn's live-action Superman film for quite some time.

Who Even Are the 'Creature Commandos'?

One of the more obscure super-teams in DC's vast gallery of characters, the Creature Commandos are essentially a version of the Suicide Squad but with a classic Universal Monster-themed twist. Once again, the team of misfits is led by the ruthless Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who seeks to use these metahumans as cannon fodder for her latest mission. What that mission is and how it will unfold remains to be seen.

What we do know is that Creature Commandos boasts a stellar ensemble voice-cast that's more than fitting of the super-team. This includes Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as Rick Flag Sr., David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Eric Frankenstein, Indira Varma (Obi-Wan Kenobi) as Bride of Frankenstein, Maria Bakalova (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Alan Tudyk (Doom Patrol) as Doctor Phosporus, Zoë Chao (Love Life), and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) as G.I. Robot and Weasel. The series also boasts several stars of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, with Viola Davis expected to return as Amanda Waller and Steve Agee as John Economos. Speaking of Peacemaker, James Gunn is keeping true to the promise that characters from animated DCU projects will appear in live-action, with Frank Grillo confirmed to appear as Rick Flag Sr. in Peacemaker Season 2.

Creature Commandos is expected to slither onto Max sometime in 2024.
