Family of 6-year-old asking for answers after child unexpectedly dies at Children's Hospital
The family of a 6-year-old that unexpectedly died at Children's Hospital said they have a lot of unanswered questions about his last moments alive.
Monday, Jeffrey and Alexys Spriggens held a vigil near the hospital and released balloons to honor their child.
“God, I want you to watch over my baby boy. He was such a blessing. He was such a blessing he got me saying a prayer,” said Jeffrey Spriggens.
In a viral video, the parents posted about their experience at the hospital saying the trip to the emergency room took a turn for the worse.
"He was gasping for air, saying he couldn't breathe," said Alexys Spriggens.
According to the family, while in the Children's Hospital emergency room, Jace was complaining about stomach aches, as well as chest and throat pain.
The family said the child's cries got worse, and when they called for help, they were allegedly ignored.
"I promise, I promise. I wish it was more I could do for you," said Spriggens.
In a statement, Children's Hospital says "due to laws that protect privacy of patients, we are not able to share specific details." Children also reassured that they are committed to the "highest standard" of care for everyone who walks through their doors. They went on to say, "When faced with an unexpected loss, our hearts break alongside the families."
Jace's grandfather William Martin said his grandson was a special kid that cared about people around him.
"I could go on and on. I could go on and on. It's just man, unbelievable," said Martin.
The family called Jace heaven-sent, saying he loved dancing and made a huge impact in six short years.
"I'm going to miss his smile the most. His smile would light up any room he walk into. I'm going to miss his smile," said Spriggens.
As the family continues to ask questions about his death, they're remembering the little giant they say fought until the end.
"He's was strong and he kept that strength in me. He was strong," said Spriggens.
