Nermal seems to be a hated character in the Garfield show but he's one of my favorite characters. I wanna know why he's hated.
Sure he's narcissistic at times and brags being cuter than others so what? Garfield's is just as much of a self absorbed jerk as he is. Not to mention he always acts like a jerk to Nermal and sends him to Abu Dhabi. Also in the episode King Nermal I think Nermal faking being injured to get royal treatment was justified due to how mean Garfield and Odie were to him when he was just trying to be a good house guest. Garfield even tried to attack him when he kindly asked for water not caring that (as far as Garfield knew) he had a broken leg. You have to be a pretty bad person to be willing to attack someone younger and smaller than you with a broken leg.
He's also fat and lazy and he always mistreats and takes advantage of his owner Jon Arbuckle and the same to his best friend Odie just because he's a dog. And he hates dogs and in an episode called the History of Dogs made up a lot of stuff to make dogs look stupid on national tv. And he's also narcissitc and maybe even racist as in the episode where he talked about the history of cats he said cats were the greatest animals on Earth and made up a lot of historial inaccuracies to make cats seem more important. He also once said in an episode where he was doing chores that humans were invented to do chores for pets.
So why is Nermal disliked in the Garfield Show and not Garfield himself?

Because Garfield is the main character and he hates Nermal, therefore, we the audience must hate him too
There are tons of fictional characters who are hated by the main character who are loved by the audience.
Name one person who unironically likes this version of Nermal, you can't say yourself btw.

Because Garfield is funny. That's it. We all know and accept that Garfield's an asshole, but he's not real and he's funny so that's all we need.
Nermal sucked
He's annoying.
Because Nermal is meant to be annoying for seeming so arrogant about something so trivial and he gets on Garfield's nerves so I can see why the audience is meant to find it funny.
And to be fair in history of dogs, it doesn't count as racism since they're different species, still pretty uncool tho
Racism - "the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another."
Since Garfield thinks that the feline race is superior to the canine race, this counts as racism.
They're not a race tho, a family of mammals in the order Carnivora

The wise-cracking "cute" child character archetype is often hated, see also Scrappy-Doo or Snarf. I'm not sure why, they never bothered me, but a lot of people dislike them.
Scrappy-Doo specifically is because he was massively overexposed to the point of replacing almost the entire rest of the cast. He was actually liked at first.
Because we see the world through Garfields eyes and he hates nermal as a result our experience is based on his feelings on nermal
