In 1995, Sony merged CBS Music Publishing with the remaining arm of ATV, the ATV Music publishing company which was owned by Michael Jackson. Both Jackson and Sony would own 50% of the new company each.

In 2016, Sony Music Entertainment purchased Michael Jackson's stake in Sony/ATV from his estate for $750 million, though it did not include Mijac Music which owned Jackson's music. In 2017, Paul McCartney regained ownership of his share of the Beatles' publishing.
