Full of groovy and funky bangers which Hot Chip have become masters of making.

Hot Chip are not a band anyone is expecting to drop their best work in 2022, and while this firmly isn’t, I still had fun with it for what it was. If you’re expecting something as creative and bold as their earlier stuff you’re probably in the wrong place (aside from the batshit insane title track), but Alexis, Joe and the gang have assembled an album of thoroughly competent pop songs that manage to have that usual Hot Chip sheen. It’s a charming record that proves the band don’t need to use any bells and whistles to deliver a good time, though if you’re expecting anything more than a fun, slightly-more-disco-leaning-than-usual pop album this is going to severely underwhelm. Temper your expectations, prepare for pop, and I think there’s plenty of fun to be had.

A ver, digamos las cosas como son. Hot Chip es de esas bandas que por alguna razón nunca ha logrado plasmar en sus álbumes de estudio su sonido en vivo. Y por alguna razón tenía fe en Freakout/Release, porque antes de ponerle play había escuchado “Down” y su sonido se me hacía bastante entretenido y rescataba muchas de sus virtudes.

Y si, el hecho que el tema que nombré fuese que el que abriese el disco logró engañarme, ya que tiene mucho del revival setentero, con un buen build up, donde la producción ayuda a dar el ambiente con el sonido de una vieja radio, para luego despegar con todo. Y pensaba que el álbum rescataría ese estilo, pero de pronto todo vuelve a ser el típico sonido de la banda.

Eso no es malo, pero tampoco muy destacable. Hay varios clichés que han usado anteriormente, como en el caso de sus dos trabajos anteriores, con uno que otro sintetizador predominante que realiza alguna que otra línea que intenta ser pegajosa, pero no resulta del todo, y con unos ganchos bastantes débiles.

Ahora, los mejores momentos es donde vuelven al ritmo más setentero, coqueteando incluso con el new wave de finales de esa década, como el caso del tema que da título al álbum, o la fantástica “Hard to Be Funky”, además del rap en “The Evil That Men Do”, cortesía de Cadence Weapon. Pero el resto no me dejó una gran impresión.

El disco como que intenta despegar en “Time”, pero no aprovecha ese momentum. Logrando hacer así un disco promedio de synth pop que puede ganar potencia en su gira.

Y así Hot Chip desaprovecha otra oportunidad. Aunque Freakout/Release no es malo, pero sí que pudo ser mucho mejor, con ese mentiroso tema de apertura que me prometía un tremendo álbum.

while slightly less strong & adventurous than their underrated previous album, this is still a great collection of songs that showcase many things that hot chip are still very good at: hooks, ballads, and quite simply just beats that make you move. this is not even remotely their most dancey album, so the opening track is quite a pump-fake. the lyrics on this album when taken as a whole gesture to alexis wrestling with multiple personal crises, just like most of us in the last couple of years. i'm a sucker for hot chip in general so i was never going to dislike this album but i genuinely think this is a pretty strong release that merits a closer look from many, although it may not be upbeat enough to get one.

top 3: out of my depth (KILLER song lyrically, oof), hard to be funky (this one too), freakout/release

2015’s Why Make Sense was a tour de force. 2019’s Bathful Of Ecstasy a complete washout. This is basically/almost a back-on-the-right-track kinda album. The first-quarter stretch is very strong. Opener Down works up a deep hot cesspit of divine nerd-funk whereas 2nd track Eleanor is bouncier and poppier with a shimmery trampoline melody. A pure crystal rush. A near complete classic for the band. 3rd track and title song delves assuredly into more of earlier electro-funk and furthermore into the darkness. ‘Music used to be an escape, now I can’t escape it’. Beyond that point, the album gets rather sketchy.

A few of songs stray stylistically from the pack in a bad way - Not Alone is a soft and wimpy contemporary-sounding ballad that even current-day Music Of The Spheres Coldplay might baulk at. Time is a trancy yet generic excursion that ticks along nicely but is better belonging to something like Clubland Volume 8. The Evil That Men Do has guest star Cadence Weapon rattle off some decent rap verse but up to that point is really bland and forgettable. Peak moments instead are the smooth, self-pitying Hard To Be Funky which packs an almightily smoking cool groove and has lyrics which straddle a line between simplistic n stoopid and simply genius. It also features the other strong, this time slinkier guest spot –Lou Hayter. Penultimate track Guilty is a charged electro-pop number with the power of several Gary Numan Tubeway Armies that are in joint forces with ABBA’s Visitors.

Not a Hot Chip album to freak out over, it nonetheless is one of the stronger releases of 2022.

Distintos ánimos para la pista de baile
Los Hot Chip son una de esas bandas que salen a relucir cada vez que se piensa en la pista de baile, pues desde que debutaron a mediados de los años 2000 han logrado hacerse de una gran reputación lanzamiento tras lanzamiento, y siempre con una música infecciosa que pone a todos de buen humor; por lo tanto, en este octavo álbum de estudio, la banda nos entrega su primer álbum post-pandemia, generando una gran expectativa producida por la necesidad de libertad que ha generado el confinamiento en los años recientes.

Los Hot Chip nos dan la bienvenida con "Down", una canción que es prácticamente una invitación al baile, ya que mezclan su Indietronica con unos irresistibles arreglos que recuerdan al David Bowie de "Let's Dance". Posteriormente, en "Eleanor" nos entregan una canción todavía más pulida y bailable al combinar Synthpop con Alternative Dance, mientras en el fondo nos hablan de la indecisión en el amor y la pista.
Después, en la homónima "Freakout/Release" declaran usar la música como un escape, a la vez que añaden una voz robotizada, que le da un toque retro, así como algunas influencias de New Rave. Luego continúan con "Broken", que es apta para todos aquellos con el corazón roto y que no encuentran las palabras, mientras en el fondo nos dan una melódica pieza de Synthpop con una disminución en la intensidad de los decibelios; similar a la pista anterior encontramos cortes como "Not Alone" con esa estructura de balada tierna pero melancólica, o "Misa The Bliss" con ese énfasis en lo vocal.
A mitad del álbum aparece "Hard To Be Funky (Feat. Lou Hayter)", que representa su lado más sexy y funky, a la vez que parecen mezclar a los Talking Heads más mesurados con los Depeche Mode más bailables. Y las influencias retro continúan en canciones como "Time" o "Guilty", en las que evocan a esa combinación de Synthpop y Rock, añadiendo múltiples arreglos instrumentales y una producción casi vintage.
Y ya en el tramo final nos dan "The Evil That Men Do (Feat. Cadence Weapon)", que cuenta con un inusual segmento de Rap, pero sin dejar ese lado bailable; posteriormente cierran con "Out Of My Depth", que destaca por esos sintetizadores brillantes y una estructura progresiva que nos recuerda a himnos como "Baba O'Riley" o "All My Friends".

Conclusión:
Los Hot Chip nos entregan un álbum coherente con el resto de su discografía, pues continúan con esa efectiva combinación de Synthpop y Alternative Dance que va de lo bailable a lo reflexivo. Por lo tanto, el grupo nos entrega el que podría ser su álbum más diverso: en el encontramos pistas para bailar y divertirnos, otras para reflexionar, y otras tantas para dejarse llevar por el momento; mostrando así su capacidad para manejar melodías, intensidades y diversos subgéneros musicales.
Por otro lado, a pesar de lo variado que resulta el contenido general del álbum, el tramo intermedio se siente en deuda con el inicio y el fin, pues las influencias de Funk, New Wave, y hasta R&B, resultan algo pobres y menos infecciosas de lo que se podría esperar; de igual manera, los Hot Chip no distan mucho de su fórmula habitual y nos dejan deseando algo más transgresor dentro de su carrera.
Después de todo, los Hot Chip continúan con una discografía sólida y nos entregan un trabajo perfecto para la ocasión, pretendiendo ser esa colección de canciones alegres y reflexivas.

Their first true miss
I've been a fan of Hot Chip since the mid-00s, and I have long been amazed at how well they've been able to evolve while delivering quality songs and albums.

This, however, is not it. Alexis Taylor, in an interview with Stereogum, was quoted saying the album is not mellow and has no ballads. Well, our definitions of ballads clearly differ.

In fact, Freakout/Release is a long slog, with songs often blending together in the same slow pace. The production is bland and the songwriting simply doesn't bring much to the table.

When they do experiment, such as the noisy title track or the inclusion of rapper Cadence Weapon, the results are almost grating. They fare better when they stick to their lane, such as the single Eleanor - perhaps the only song I'll add to my "Best of Hot Chip" playlist.

All in all, a very disappoiting release (with hardly any freakout) from an otherwise great group who - up 'til this point - have delivered the goods for almost 20 years.

    whoever's mixing/mastering this album and their last one isn't doing them any favors.
    In Our Heads and Why Make Sense? felt so clear but ever since their last album everything felt kinda washed out and muddy
