Tampoco abordaré el tema de los idioms with “weather” (tiempo meteorológico). Pero lo que sí haré será compartir contigo más de 100 idioms o expresiones de tiempo con la palabra «TIME» en inglés que vendrán acompañadas de:

Traducción: (UNA) CUESTIÓN DE TIEMPO

Frases de ejemplo:

You’ll find a job eventually – it’s just a question of time (=al final encontrarás un trabajo. Es solo cuestión de tiempo).

It was only a matter of time before they left the country (=era solo cuestión de tiempo que se marcharan/fueran del país).

2) ABOUT/HIGH TIME

Nivel: C1

Estilo: informal

Traducción: (YA) ES/ERA/IBA SIENDO HORA

Ejemplos:

It’s about/high time (that) you startED👈 to look for a job (=ya es hora de que 👉empieces👈 a buscar trabajo).

It was about time you learnt some manners (=ya iba siendo hora de que aprendieras modales).

It’s high/about time FOR US TO go* (=ya es hora de que nos vayamos).

*Fíjate que en esta última frase he usado una estructura ligeramente diferente: about/high time FOR US TO do sth. El significado es el mismo que en los ejemplos anteriores. La diferencia es que tú eliges la estructura para montar tus frases.

Uso:

De manera más abreviada, también podemos simplemente decir “ya era hora” y punto; sin añadir nada más detrás: (AND) ABOUT TIME (TOO)

Ejemplo:

“Here they are.” “And about time too!” (=Ya están aquí. ¡Ya era hora!)

Estas ‘collocations’ o expresiones tan frecuentes con tiempo en inglés suelen utlizarse en tono de crítica para quejarse de algo o protestar, especialmente cuando creemos que alguien debería hacer algo pronto o que ya lo debería haber hecho. Así que, ¡cuidadito con el tiempo verbal! – en inglés va 👉en PASADO👈 aunque empecemos la frase con «it IS about/hight time that …» 🤷‍♀️

3) AGAINST TIME/THE CLOCK

Traducción: CONTRA RELOJ

Ejemplos:

They’re working against time/the clock to meet the deadline (=están trabajando contra reloj para entregar el trabajo dentro del plazo previsto/de la fecha límite).

The race/battle/fight against time to stop deforestation has already begun (=ya ha empezado la carrera/batalla/lucha contra reloj para frenar la deforestación).

4) AHEAD OF TIME/SCHEDULE

Nivel: B2

Traducción: ANTES DE, POR DELANTE, (POR) ADELANTADO

Ejemplos:

She got there an hour ahead of time (=llegó una hora antes de tiempo/la hora).

We’re ahead of time on the project (=vamos adelantados con el proyecto).

Ireland is one hour ahead of Spain (=Irlanda va una hora por delante de España o en España es una hora más tarde que en Irlanda).

Payments must be paid ahead of time (=’in advance’: los pagos se abonan por adelantado).

5) AHEAD OF YOUR/HIS/HER (etc.) TIME

Traducción: ADELANTADO A TU ÉPOCA/TIEMPO

Ejemplos:

As an artist, Dalí was years ahead of his time since he had very modern ideas that other artists used or copied later (=como artista Dalí se adelantó/fue un adelantado a su época, ya que tenía ideas muy modernas que otro artistas usaron o copiaron posteriormente).

6) ALL IN GOOD TIME

Estilo: informal

Traducción: TODO A SU TIEMPO, CADA COSA A SU TIEMPO

Ejemplo:

Be patient! We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. All in good time (=ten paciencia/se paciente, ese problema lo resolveremos cuando llegue el momento; todo a su tiempo).

Uso:

Esta frase de tiempo en inglés es muy parecida a otra expresión formal de nivel B2: “in due course”.

Ejemplo:

We’ll deal with/discuss that in due course (=eso lo trataremos/discutiremos en su debido momento/a su debido tiempo).

7) AT A TIME

Traducción: DE UNO/DOS (…) EN UNO/DOS (..), UNA/DOS (…) COSA(S)/PERSONA(S) A LA VEZ

Ejemplos:

I’m sorry, but I’m too busy to help you now – I can only concentrate on one thing at a time (=lo siento, pero estoy muy ocupado para ayudarte ahora, solo me puedo concentrar en una cosa a la vez).

I’ve lived through a lot of changes recently, but I’ve learned to take it/things one day at a time (=he pasado por muchos cambios últimamente, pero he aprendido a tomármelo conforme viene/tomarme las cosas de una en una).

“Take each day as it comes” es otro ejemplo de idiom en inglés de tiempo que se podría usar en el ejemplo anterior, ya que encaja a la perfección.

She run up the stairs two at a time (=subió las escaleras corriendo de dos en dos).

Don’t worry, we’ll take things one step at a time (=no te preocupes, haremos las cosas paso a paso).

“Step by step” sería también una buena alternativa de C1 en la frase anterior.

Uso:

Se emplea en situaciones en las que hay grupos o cantidades de un número concreto.

Otros posibles sinónimos serían:

• gradually
• progressively
• little by little

A note in the margin 📝

No confundas “at a time” con “at the same time”

No significan lo mismo, aunque a simple vista puedan resultar similares.

“At the same time” es una expresión de nivel B1 que se emplea cuando dos o más cosas suceden al mismo tiempo o a la vez.

Ejemplos:

The show will make you laugh and cry at the same time (=el espectáculo te hará reír y llorar a la vez).

You must be firm, but at the same time you should try and be understanding (=debes ser firme, pero al mismo tiempo deberías tratar de ser comprensivo).

8) AT ALL TIMES

Estilo: formal

Traducción: A TODAS HORAS, TODO EL TIEMPO

Ejemplos:

This exit must be kept clear at all times of the day and night (=esta puerta debe permanecer despejada/libre/sin obstrucciones a todas horas/las 24 horas del día).

Hot water is available at all times (=el agua caliente está disponible a todas horas).

When being at the airport, make sure you have your luggage with you at all times (=cuando estés en el aeropuerto, asegúrate de que tienes el equipaje contigo todo el tiempo).

Uso:

Los adverbios de tiempo “always” y “continuously” significan lo mismo que la expresión idiomática “at all times”. La diferencia es que esta última es más frecuente en registros formales.

9) AT ONE TIME

Nivel: C2

Traducción: EN OTRA ÉPOCA, EN OTRO TIEMPO, EN EL PASADO

Ejemplos:

At one time, Margaret Thatcher, aka the “Iron Lady”, lived here (=en el pasado, Margaret Thatcher, también conocida como la “Mujer de Hierro”, vivió aquí).

Off topic: “aka” es la abreviación de “also known as”

Uso:

“In the past” sería un sinónimo válido para esta expresión de nivel avanzado en inglés.

10) AT TIMES

Nivel: C1

Traducción: A VECES, EN OCASIONES

Ejemplos:

I’m sorry if I offend you, but you can be really annoying at times (=siento si te ofendo, pero puedes resultar muy pesado a veces/en ocasiones puedes ser muy pesado).

She gets really depressed at times (=a veces se deprime mucho, hay momentos en los que se deprime mucho).

Uso:

Dos adverbios equivalentes a esta expresión en inglés con “tiempo” son:

• sometimes (A2)
• occasionally (B2)

11) BE OUT OF TIME

Traducción: ESTAR FUERA DE TIEMPO, NO TENER/HABER MÁS TIEMPO

Ejemplos:

I’d like to continue this discussion but we‘re all out of time (=me encantaría continuar con esta conversación, pero no tenemos más tiempo).

I’m afraid we’re out of time (=lo siento, pero no hay más tiempo).

12) BE PRESSED FOR TIME (una de esas expresiones de tiempo en inglés que podríamos usar «all day long») 😂

Traducción: ESTAR/ANDAR ESCASO DE TIEMPO

Oraciones de ejemplo:

I’m a little pressed for time – could we meet later? (=voy un poco escaso/justo de tiempo, ¿nos podemos reunir más tarde/luego?)

I’d love to stop and talk, but I’m pressed for time (=me encantaría pararme y hablar, pero voy pillado/justo de tiempo).

Uso:

Además de no tener suficiente tiempo, también puedes ir justo de dinero o de espacio: “be pressed for time/money/space”, etc.

13) BEFORE YOUR/HER/SOMEBODY’S (…) TIME

Traducción: ANTES DE TÚ ÉPOCA/DE QUE NACIERAS, LLEGARAS, etc.

Ejemplos:

That was before your time, that’s why it doesn’t ring a bell to you (=eso pasó ante de que nacieras, por eso no te suena).

She was a manager here, before your time (=ella era directora aquí antes que entraras tú a trabajar).

‘Were you taught by Prof. Gibson? ‘No, he was before my time.’ (=¿te dio clases el profesor Gibson? No, él estaba antes de que yo llegara -allí a estudiar).

14) BEHIND THE TIMES

Nivel: C1

Ejemplos:

Traducción: ESTAR ANTICUADO/DESFASADO, NO ESTAR AL DÍA (DE LAS ÚLTIMAS NOTICIAS)

One could say that the company’s marketing plan is a little behind the times (=uno podría decir que el plan de marketing de la empresa está un poco desfasado).

My father doesn’t want to use WhatsApp – he never wants to keep up with the times and is behind the times (=mi padre no quiere usar WhatsApp. No quiere modernizarse y está quedándose atrás).

‘Wait!, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie broke up? I had no idea!’ I’m behind the times (=’¡Espera!, Brad Pitt y Angelina Jolie han roto? No tenía ni idea. No estoy al día’).

Uso:

El adjetivo “old-fashioned” es un sinónimo de esta común expresión en inglés usada para referirse a cosas, personas u organizaciones que viven al margen de los tiempos actuales. Es decir, que están anticuadas en la manera de pensar, trabajar, vivir o comportarse.

Por otro lado, cuando una persona no está al corriente de un tema o una situación y la información que tiene no es la más reciente, también podemos decir que está “out of touch” (frase hecha de nivel C2).

Ejemplo:

I’m a bit out of touch with what’s happening (=no estoy muy corriente o al tanto de lo que está pasando).

15) BIDE YOUR TIME

Traducción: ESPERAR/AGUARDAR EL MOMENTO OPORTUNO

Ejemplos:

We just decided to bide our time waiting for an opportunity (=estábamos a la expectativa esperando que surgiese una oportunidad).

I’ve been biding my time for years, just waiting for a chance like this (=he estado años esperando el momento oportuno, aguardando justo una oportunidad como esta).

16) BUY/GAIN TIME | PLAY FOR TIME

Traducción: GANAR TIEMPO | TRATAR DE GANAR TIEMPO

Ejemplos:

These negotiations are all part of a plan to buy time in order to win more support (=las negociaciones son parte de un plan para ganar tiempo y conseguir más apoyo).

‘I have to make a phone call first,’ she said, playing for time (=’tengo que hacer una llamada primero’, dijo ella tratando de ganar tiempo).

He tried to buy time by saying he had to sleep on it (=intentó ganar tiempo diciendo que tenía que consultarlo con la almohada).

17) BY THE TIME | BY THIS/THAT TIME (la de veces que habré usado este tipo de frases para hablar del tiempo futuro en inglés) 😆

Traducción: (PARA) CUANDO | (PARA) ESTA HORA/ENTONCES

Ejemplos:

By the time (that) you get there, the meeting will be over (=cuando llegues allí, la reunión habrá acabado).

By the time (=when) we arrived, the other guests were already there (=cuando llegamos, los otros invitados ya estaban allí).

I thought you’d be done by this time (=pensé ya que habrías terminado a esta hora).

By that time (=by then) nobody remembered him (=para entonces ya nadie le recordaba).

Uso:

“By the time” (=‘when’) se usa para conectar una acción que ha sucedido o que habrá tenido lugar antes de una segunda acción. El evento que ha ocurrido después o con posterioridad a la primera acción irá colocado después de ‘by the time’.

18) DO/SERVE ‘TIME’ (otra de esas típicas expresiones de película con la palabra tiempo en inglés) 🎬

Nivel: C2

Estilo: informal

Traducción: CUMPLIR (UNA) CONDENA, ESTAR A LA SOMBRA

Ejemplos:

It’s not easy to find a job after you’ve done time (=no es fácil encontrar trabajo después de haber estado en prisión/la cárcel).

He served ‘four years’ in prison/jail for robbery (=él estuvo cuatro años en prisión por robo).

She’s serving ‘a life sentence‘ for murder (=ella está cumpliendo cadena perpetua por asesinato).

Ted Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber, is serving ‘life‘ in prison without parole (=está cumpliendo condena de por vida/pasando su vida en la cárcel sin libertad condicional).

There are also other colloquial expressions to say that somebody spent some time in prison, for instance, «be behind bars» (a B2 informal idiom): The murderer is now behind bars (=el asesino está ahora entre rejas).

19) FIND/MAKE (THE) TIME (una más de las expresiones de tiempo que me digo a mí misma día sí y día también en inglés) 🙄

Traducción: SACAR/ENCONTRAR (EL) TIEMPO

Ejemplos:

If only I could find the time to work out 2 or 3 times a week (=ojalá pudiera encontrar tiempo para hacer ejercicio 2 o 3 veces a la/por semana).

I try hard to make time to have some me-time on weekdays (=intento sacar tiempo para tener tiempo para mí entresemana).

I don’t know where I’m going to find the time for this new task (=no sé de dónde voy a sacar el tiempo para esta nueva tarea).

20) FOR OLD TIMES’ SAKE

Traducción: POR LOS VIEJOS TIEMPOS/LA VIEJA AMISTAD

Ejemplo:

We should all meet up again – just for old times’ sake (=deberíamos juntarnos todos otra vez, solo por los viejos tiempos).

Uso:

Con la palabra “sake”, pronunciada /seɪk/, existen bastantes idioms en inglés. Te aconsejo que le eches un vistazo rápido a cualquier diccionario online. Pero no confundas esta palabra con “sake”, pronunciada /ˈsɑːki/, que es una bebida alcohólica japonesa hecha a base arroz.

Sí, lo sé. Locura máxima ver una misma palabra pronunciada de dos maneras diferentes. You know, ¡a la pronunciación en inglés hay que echarle de comer a parte!

21) FOR SOME TIME

Nivel: B2

Traducción: DURANTE UN TIEMPO, DESDE HACE (YA/ALGÚN) TIEMPO

Ejemplo:

I’ve been thinking about moving to a new job for some time now (=llevo pensando en cambiar de trabajo desde hace tiempo/llevo ya tiempo pensando en cambiar de trabajo).

Uso:

La expresión en inglés “for a long period of time” para hablar de la duración del tiempo tiene exactamente el mismo sentido que “for some time”.

22) FROM THAT TIME FORTH/FORWARD/ON/ONWARDS

Nivel: C1

Estilo: formal, literario

Traducción: A PARTIR DE ESE MOMENTO/DÍA, DE/DESDE ESE MOMENTO/DÍA EN ADELANTE

Ejemplo:

From that time onwards, he could not stop dancing.

I saw my first jazz concert at the age of 16 and from that day on, I was hooked.

From that day forth, I never saw him again (=desde aquel día, jamás lo volví a ver).

23) FOR THE TIME BEING

Nivel: C1

Ejemplos:

Traducción: POR EL MOMENTO/AHORA, DE MOMENTO

You’ll have to stay here for the time being (=tendrás que quedarte aquí por el momento).

You can leave your suitcase here for the time being (=puedes dejar tu maleta aquí de momento).

Uso:

Otras expresiones para hablar de tiempo en inglés son “for now” o “for the moment”. Tienen el mismo significado que “for the time being”, pero son más informales.

24) FROM TIME TO TIME

Nivel: B2

Traducción: DE VEZ EN CUANDO, OCASIONALMENTE

Frases con ejemplos:

From time to time I still think of him and of our time together (=de vez en cuando todavía pienso en él y en nuestro tiempo juntos).

I work at weekends from time to time (=de vez en cuando trabajo los fines de semana).

Uso:

Otros adverbios de tiempo muy parecidos son:

• sometimes
• occasionally
• but not often

Además, también podemos encontrar otros ejemplos equivalentes, pero de un nivel superior, tales como: every so often, every now and then/again, every once in a while, on occasion.

25) GIVE SOMEBODY A HARD/DIFFICULT/TOUGH TIME

Nivel: C2 (informal)

Traducción: HACÉRSELAS PASAR MAL A ALGUIEN

Ejemplos:

They really gave me a hard time in the last round of interviews (=realmente me lo hicieron pasar mal en la última ronda de entrevistas).

26) GO THROUGH BAD TIMES (no es plato de gusto pronunciar oraciones así, ya sea en inglés o en español, pero es ley de vida pasar por malos tiempos a veces) 😥

Traducción: PASARLO MAL, PASAR/ATRAVESAR UNA MALA ETAPA/MAL MOMENTO

Ejemplo:

I’ve gone through bad times since I was furloughed, but I’m trying to stay positive (=he pasado malos ratos desde que me hicieron un ERTE, pero intento mantenerme positivo).

A have a little nest egg that I’m saving in case my family and I go through bad times at some point (=tengo unos pocos ahorrillos que estoy guardando por si mi familia y yo lo pasa mal en algún momento).

Uso:

The truth is, you can use numerous expressions to talk about someone who is going through an unfortunate period.

Sin ir más lejos, se me ocurre la siguiente frase informal de nivel C2: “go through a bad/difficult/rough/sticky patch” (=pasar/atravesar por una mala racha o un bache).

27) HAVE A LOT OF TIME | HAVE NO TIME (for sb)

Estilo: informal

Traducción: CAERTE MUY BIEN ALGUIEN | NO SOPORTAR A ALGUIEN

Ejemplos:

I’ve got a lot of time for him (=me cae muy bien).

I have no time for people like her (=no soporto a la gente como ella).

Uso:

Aunque esta frase también se puede utilizar para hablar de cosas, es más habitual oírla para referirse a personas que nos caen bien, y nos gustan, o todo lo contrario.

28) (HAVE) A WHALE OF A TIME | (HAVE) THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE

Estilo: informal

Traducción: PASARLO BOMBA/GENIAL | DIVERTIRSE COMO NUNCA/DE LO LINDO

Ejemplos:

The kids had a whale of a time at the theme/amusement park (=los niños se lo pasaron pipa/bomba/genial en el parque temático/de atracciones).

We had the time of our lives at the fancy-dress party (=nos divertimos como nunca en la fiesta de disfraces).

29) HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD (esta es de las expresiones idiomáticas de tiempo más fáciles en inglés) 😉

Estilo: informal

Traducción: TENER TODO EL TIEMPO DEL MUNDO

Ejemplos:

There’s no need to hurry, we have all the time in the world (=no hay prisa, tenemos todo el tiempo del mundo).

My psychotherapist made me feel as if she had all the time in the world to listen to my worries. I feel at ease with her (=mi psicoterapeuta me hizo sentir como si tuviera todo el tiempo del mundo para escuchar mis preocupaciones. Siento que me puedo relajar con ella).

30) HAVE A THIN TIME (of it) | HAVE A LEAN TIME/PERIOD/SPELL

Nivel: C2 (informal)

Traducción: VÉRSELAS NEGRAS, PASARLAS CANUTAS

Ejemplos:

He’s had a thin time of it since his layoff (=las está pasando canutas desde su despido).

A large number of small businesses are currently having a thin time of it because of the coronavirus pandemic, and many are closing down (=un gran número de pequeños negocios/comercios se las están viendo negras en estos momentos por la pandemia de coronavirus y muchos están cerrando).

The company recovered well after going through several lean years (=la compañía se recuperó bien después de pasar por varios años maos/de escasez/de vacas flacas).

Uso:

Esta frase del inglés hablado o coloquial con la palabra “tiempo” se emplea para describir las malas rachas por las que todos pasamos a veces, especialmente debido a la falta de dinero o comida.

31) HAVE/TAKE TIME OFF (palabras relacionadas con el tiempo en inglés que todos deberíamos tener muy presentes para evitar el llamado «síndrome de burnout») 😩

Traducción: TOMARSE TIEMPO (libre del trabajo)

Ejemplos:

I asked my boss if I could have an afternoon off (from work) to go to the dentist (=le pregunté a mi jefe si podía tener/tomarme la tarde libre para ir al dentista).

Increasing numbers of fathers want to have time off to care for their children (=un número cada vez mayor de padres quiere tener tiempo libre para cuidar a sus hijos).

There are rules covering time off work for maternity leave, sickness, or other temporary absence (=hay normas que cubren/garantizan el tiempo que pasas fuera del trabajo por permiso de maternidad, enfermedad u otras ausencias temporales).

Uso:

Suele usarse para hablar del tiempo que no pasas trabajando, en el colegio, etc. por razones como vacaciones, una enfermedad, una visita al médico o cualquier otro tema personal por el cual debas faltar al trabajo.

32) HAVE TIME ON YOUR HANDS | HAVE TIME TO KILL/KILL TIME

Estilo: informal

Traducción: TENER TIEMPO LIBRE | MATAR EL TIEMPO, TENER TIEMPO SIN NADA QUE HACER

Ejemplos:

Now you’re retired and have more time on your hands, why don’t you take a course on something you like? (=ahora que estás jubilado y tienes más tiempo libre, ¿por qué no haces un curso de algo que te guste?)

I went for a walk along the river to kill the time (=fui a dar un paseo por el río para matar el tiempo).

I have a couple of hours to kill, do you want to have some coffee? (=tengo una hora sin nada que hacer, ¿quieres tomar un café?)

33) IN (THE) OLDEN TIMES/DAYS

Estilo: literario

Traducción: EN LA ANTIGÜEDAD, ANTIGUAMENTE, ANTAÑO

Ejemplos:

In the olden days/In olden times people used to travel by horse (=antiguamente las personas solían viajar a caballo).

Uso:

“In the old days” (C1) y “way back” (informal) son otras frases de tiempo en inglés semejantes.

Y no son las únicas, ya que “in ancient/former times” es otro idiom que también se utiliza para hablar de lo que sucedía “en otros tiempos” o “antes”.

Por otro lado, los siguientes podrían ser algunos de sus antónimos:

• in modern times
• in the modern world
• at the present time
• in this day and age (idiom)

Más ejemplos:

In the old days we only had two TV channels: TVE 1 and TVE 2 (=antiguamente solo teníamos dos canales de televisión: la 1 y la 2 de televisión española).

I first met him way back in the 80s (=lo conocí allá por los años 80).

34) IN MY/SOMEBODY’S TIME

Traducción: EN MI ÉPOCA, EN MIS TIEMPOS

Ejemplos:

It won’t happen in our time (=no pasará en nuestra época, nosotros no lo veremos).

Things like that didn’t happen in my time (=en mis tiempos esas cosas no pasaban).

35) IN NO TIME (AT ALL) | IN NEXT TO NO TIME

Traducción: ENSEGUIDA, EN UN SANTIAMÉN, EN UN SEGUNDO

Ejemplos:

When hungry, the kids eat their dinner in no time (=cuando tienen hambre, los niños se comen la cena enseguida).

Dont worry, I’ll have it ready in next to no time (=no te preocupes, lo termino en un segundo).

Uso:

Esta frase o idiom con la palabra ‘time’ en inglés tiene varios sinónimos: “very quickly”, “immediately” o “at once” son algunos de ellos.

36) IN THE COURSE OF TIME | IN THE FULLNESS OF TIME

Nivel: C1, C2

Traducción: CON EL (PASO DEL) TIEMPO, AL FINAL

Oraciones con ejemplos:

It is possible that in the course of time (=eventually) a cure for cancer will be found (=es posible que con el tiempo se encuentre una cura para el cáncer).

Por supuesto, estas dos expresiones tienen otras opciones muy parecidas, y de distintos niveles:

37) IN YOUR OWN (GOOD) TIME

Estilo: informal

Traducción: A TU (PROPIO) RITMO

Ejemplos:

‘What’s the rush/hurry? I’ll do it in my own good time’ (=’¿A qué viene tanta prisa? Lo haré a mi ritmo’).

38) IN TIME vs ON TIME (¡con la iglesia hemos topado!, llegamos al ‘common mistake’ número 1 de esta súper guía de expresiones de tiempo en inglés) 🤯

Traducción: A TIEMPO/CON TIEMPO SUFICIENTE vs PUNTUAL/A LA HORA

I’d like to be home in time for tea (=me gustaría estar en casa a tiempo para la cena).

Ejemplos:

I hope to get home in time to have dinner all together (=espero llegar a casa a tiempo para cenar todos juntos).

We got to the airport just in time to see her off (=llegamos al aeropuerto justo a tiempo para despedirla/decirle adiós).

You’re just in time to give us a hand (=llegas justo a tiempo de echarnos una mano).

She’s never on time (=siempre llega tarde, nunca llega puntual/a la hora prevista/acordada/exacta).

The buses hardly ever run on time (=los autobuses casi nunca pasan a su hora o puntualmente).

Uso:

No voy a negar que la diferencia entre estas dos expresiones temporales en inglés es mínima; básicamente conceptual. Pero es esencial distinguir “in time” de “on time” porque es uno de esos típicos ‘common mistakes’ en inglés.

A mí me funciona usar sustitutos para no confundirme entre las dos frases.

Aquí va mi truco:

IN TIME: EARLY ENOUGH (=con tiempo suficiente/de sobra para algo o hacer algo).

ON TIME: ON SCHEDULE, NOT EARLY/LATE (=a la hora prevista/no más temprano ni más tarde)

Ponlo en práctica y dime si te sirve para dejar de confundirte entre estas dos expresiones tan parecidas para hablar del tiempo que sobra y la puntualidad en inglés.  

39) MOVE/KEEP UP WITH THE TIMES

Traducción: MANTENERSE AL DÍA/CAMBIAR/MODERNIZARSE CON LOS TIEMPOS

Ejemplos:

In this business, you move with the times or you fail (=en este negocio, te mantienes al día o fracasas).

40) MAKE UP FOR LOST TIME

Traducción: RECUPERAR EL TIEMPO PERDIDO

Ejemplos:

After more than 10 years in prison, he’s home with his kids and making up for lost time (=después de más de 10 años en prisión, él está ahora en casa con sus hijos recuperando el tiempo perdido).

I didn´t travel much in my twenties. That’s why I’m determined to make up for lost time and see the world now I’m retired (=no viajé mucho en mis veinte. Por eso estoy decidido a recuperar el tiempo y ver mundo ahora que estoy jubilado).

41) NOT GIVE SOMEBODY THE TIME OF THE DAY

Estilo: informal

Traducción: NO DARLE A ALGUIEN (NI) LA HORA

Ejemplos:

We had an argument with our neighbours, and now they won’t even give us the time of day (=tuvimos una discusión con nuestros vecinos y ahora no nos dan ni la hora).

42) OF ALL TIME

Traducción: DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS

Ejemplos:

Many rated him the best singer of all time (=muchos lo califican como el mejor cantante de todos los tiempos).

She’s been called the greatest boxer of all time (= la han descrito como la boxeadora más grande de todos los tiempos).

Uso:

A menudo se usa para referirse a alguien que ha sido el mejor o la mejor de todos los tiempos en su ámbito, especialmente en el terreno deportivo.

Muchas veces se abrevia bajo el acrónimo “the GOAT” (=Greatest Of All Time): “LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Serena Williams are often referred to as the G.O.A.T. in their respective sports by fans and journalists alike”.

43) ONCE UPON A TIME (de esas frases que son perfectas para empezar a contar una historia o cuento en inglés que pasó hace mucho tiempo) 📖

Nivel: B1

Traducción: HÁBIA/ÉRASE UNA VEZ, HUBO UN TIEMPO

Ejemplos:

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, lived a beautiful princess … (=érase una vez, en una tierra lejana, vivía una bella princesa …).

Once upon a time, you could leave your doors unlocked at night and not worry about someone breaking in (=hubo un tiempo en el que podías dejar las puertas sin echar la llave por la noche sin preocuparte de que alguien entrara a robar).

Uso:

Aunque suele usarse al inicio de los cuentos para niños, esta frase para expresar el paso del tiempo en inglés también puede aplicarse para hablar de una situación que existió en el pasado, sobre todo cuando te parecía mejor que el presente.

44) PASS THE TIME

Traducción: PASAR EL RATO | INTERCAMBIAR ALGUNAS PALABRAS CON ALGUIEN (a modo de saludo)

Ejemplos:

In (the) summer time, we usually watch movies and play cards to pass the time (=en el verano solemos ver videos y jugar a las cartas para pasar el rato).

Uso:

“Pass the time of the day with someone”, por el contrario, no tiene nada que ver con la anterior frase por extraño que parezca, ya que significa “intercambiar algunas palabras o mantener una conversación corta e informal con alguien”, muchas veces a modo de saludo rápido. Fíjate en la oración siguiente:

We just pass the time of the day with her when we meet (=cuando la vemos, nos saludamos con un “¿qué tal?” y nada más).

45) RUN OUT OF TIME

Nivel: B1

Traducción: QUEDARSE SIN TIEMPO/ACABARSE EL TIEMPO

Ejemplos:

I ran out of time and didn’t finish the test (=me quedé sin tiempo y no terminé el examen).

Time is running out for them to complete the project (=les queda poco tiempo/se les está acabando el tiempo para terminar el proyecto).

Uso:

To “run out of sth” es uno de esos phrasal verbs de nivel B2 muy comunes. Se puede usar para hablar de casi cualquier cosa que se acaba y no solo del tiempo.

46) SAVE/SPEND/WASTE TIME (on something/doing something)

Nivel: A2-B1

Traducción: AHORRAR TIEMPO/PASAR, DEDICAR, EMPLEAR TIEMPO/MALGASTAR, DESPERDICIAR, PERDER TIEMPO

Ejemplos:

Having a dishwasher saves me a lot of time (=tener un lavavajillas me ahorra mucho tiempo).

They spent a lot of time and energy (working) on the project (=inviertieron, le dedicaron mucho tiempo y muchas energías al proyecto).

Spend your time wisely (=emplea bien/sabiamente el tiempo).

He spends a lot of his time working (=él pasa gran parte de su tiempo trabajando).

Don’t waste any more time arguing (=no malgastes más tiempo discutiendo).

Come on, let’s get started – we’ve wasted enough time already (=¡venga!, vamos a empezar que hemos perdido suficiente tiempo ya).

She doesn’t waste any time (in) tackling her problems when they arise (=ella no pierde ni un minuto en abordar sus problemas cuando éstos surgen).

Uso:

“Waste”, además de ser un verbo, también puede usarse como sustantivo o nombre. Y la frase “this is a waste of time” suena muy natural en inglés cuando quieres decir que algo te parece ‘una pérdida de tiempo’. Te dejo unas oraciones más de ejemplo con esta expresión:

Don’t you think it’s a complete waste of time? (=¿no crees que es una completa pérdida de tiempo?)

What a waste of time! (=¡qué pérdida de tiempo!)

47) TIME WELL SPENT (I’m madly in love with esta clase de palabras y expresiones tan bonitas de tiempo en inglés) 😍

Time spent planning and analysing is time well spent, especially when setting up your own business (=el tiempo que pasas planeando y analizando es un tiempo bien aprovechado, sobre todo/especialmente cuando estás montando tu propio negocio).

48) STAND/WITHSTAND THE TEST OF TIME

Uso:

Esta expresión idiomática de tiempo en inglés también puede usarse en tono de reproche para expresar que alguien/algo está tardando mucho o demasiado en hacer algo. In other words, que va muy lento.

Más ejemplos de oraciones con expresiones idiomáticas de tiempo en el inglés del día a día:

You’re taking your time to answer. You should turn in your test in 5 minutes (=estás tardando mucho en responder. Deberías entregar el examen en 5 minutos).

You certainly took your time having a shower. We’ll be late (=desde luego, te tomaste tu tiempo duchándote. Llegaremos tarde).

Otra frase en inglés muy usada también en el día a día es: “it takes (someone’s) time to do something”.

51) THE TIME IS RIPE/RIGHT (uno de mis idioms favoritos en inglés para hablar de la llegada de ese momento oportuno que llevas tanto tiempo esperando) 🤗

Uso:

“Ripe” es un adjetivo de nivel B2 que puede traducirse por ‘maduro’, ‘a punto’ o ‘listo’, bien para hablar de alimentos, o bien, del tiempo en sentido figurativo.

52) TIME AFTER TIME

Uso:

Ejemplo:

Let’s patch the roof before that hole gets bigger. A stitch in time saves nine (=reparemos/arreglemos el tejado antes de que el agujero se haga más grande. Una puntada a tiempo ahorra ciento).

Uso:

En español tenemos un dicho, o ‘saying’ en inglés, sin la palabra tiempo que significa prácticamente lo mismo.

Aunque quizá la apliquemos en otro tipo de contextos, concretamente en situaciones más relacionadas con correr riesgos: “más vale prevenir que curar” (=“better safe than sorry”, “prevention is better than cure”).

No sé si te habrás dado cuenta, pero a lo tonto te estoy dando frases hechas y expresiones de tiempo en inglés a punta pala 😜

60) AT NO TIME DID (I GIVE/SAY (etc.) …

Traducción: EN NINGÚN MOMENTO DÍ/DIJE (etc.) …

Oraciones de ejemplo:

At no time did I give my consent to the plan (=en ningún momento dí mi consentimiento al/para el plan).

At no time did I wish anything of the kind. I wouldn’t wish something like that on my worst enemy (=en ningún momento deseé nada de eso/ese tipo. No le desearía algo así ni a mi peor enemigo).

«The purpose of my request was simply to provide background information and at no time did I intend to use this information, neither for political gain nor for public use.» – BBC News (=el propósito de mi solicitud/petición simplemente era proporcionar información sobre el contexto de la situación y en ningún momento tuve la intención/quise usar esta información ni en beneficio político ni para uso público).

Uso:

En este caso tenemos una expresión en inglés con la palabra “tiempo” junto a una estructura de nivel avanzado. Se trata de la inversión en inglés.

Recibe ese nombre porque se invierte el orden usual de las frases, tanto en afirmativa como en negativa. Si prestas atención, verás que los elementos están colocados igual que en las oraciones interrogativas aún sin haber ninguna pregunta.

El objetivo de la inversión en inglés es el de sonar más formal o darle más énfasis a lo que decimos.

61) (BE) IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME

Traducción: ESTAR EN EL SITIO JUSTO EN EL MOMENTO OPORTUNO

Ejemplos:

She was in the right place at the right time and they hired her immediately (=estuvo en el sitio justo en el momento oportuno y la contrataron inmediatamente).

I’m sorry to hear that you failed your driving test. Better luck next time! (=siento que no hayas pasado el examen de conducir. Habrá más/tendrás mejor suerte la próxima vez).

63) IF TIME PERMITS

Nivel: C1

Traducción: SI HAY TIEMPO, SI EL TIEMPO LO PERMITE

Ejemplo:

We will discuss this matter later if time permits (=hablaremos de/discutiremos este tema si hay tiempo).

Uso:

Podríamos decir que esta expresión es la versión con “time” de otra combinación de palabras que es muy común oír al final de una frase, a modo coletilla, en el inglés hablado: “wheather permitting” (=si hace buen tiempo, si el tiempo no lo impide).

Aquí un ejemplo característico de esas expresiones tan comunes para hablar del tiempo meteorológico en inglés:

Next Sunday, we’re going to have a picnic in the mountains, weather permitting (=if the weather is good enough/if it doesn’r rain).

64) FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME | UMPTEEN TIMES

Estilo: informal

Traducción: POR ENÉSIMA VEZ | TROPECIENTAS VECES, UN MILLÓN/MILES DE VECES

Ejemplos:

For the umpteenth time, stop teasing your sister (=por enésima vez, deja de hacerle rabiar/fastidiar a tu hermana).

I don’t believe it!, we’ve been there umpteen times and you still can’t remember the way (=¡no puedo creerlo!, hemos estado allí tropecientas veces y sigues sin recordar el camino).

Uso:

Otras expresiones o frases informales con la palabra «tiempo» en inglés que también nos sirven para dejar claro nuestro enfado cuando algo lo hemos dicho o repetido tantas veces que hasta hemos perdido la cuenta son: “for the hundredth/thousandth time” y “a hundred times”. Su significado es siempre el mismo: “many times before”, “on many occasions”.

Aquí un ejemplo:

I’ve told you that story a hundred times/hundreds of times, aren’t you fed up with it? (=te he contado ese cuento centenares/cientos de veces, ¿no estás harto de él?)

65) GIVE ME (SOMETHING) ANY TIME/DAY

Estilo: informal

Traducción: DAME (ALGO) TODA LA VIDA/SIEMPRE/CUANDO SEA

Ejemplo:

“Would you like a drink?” “Gin or whisky?” – “Give me whisky any time! (=»¿quieres un trago? Ginebra o Whisky? Para mí whisky, toda la vida»).

We don’t go out much. Give me a quiet night in front of the TV any day! (=no salimos mucho. Dame una noche tranquila frente al televisor siempre).

66) GIVE IT/SOMETHING TIME

Traducción: DARLE TIEMPO (A ALGO), DAR(LE) TIEMPO AL TIEMPO

Ejemplos:

I’m sure she’s gointg to get better, you just have to give it time (=seguro que ella va a mejorar, tú dale tiempo al tiempo).

Let’s not rush into it. I know things seem bad now but we must give it time and they might get better (=no debemos precipitarnos. Sé que las cosas no pintan bien/tienen mal aspecto ahora, pero hay que/debemos darle tiempo al tiempo y quizá mejoren).

Uso:

Esta expresión en inglés de tiempo se usa en contextos coloquiales para hacer hincapié en la importancia de ser paciente y saber esperar. También podríamos haber usado la frase “be patient” en cualquiera de los dos ejemplos. Y el significado no habría cambiado en absoluto.

67) HOW MANY TIMES … ?

Estilo: informal

Traducción: ¿CUÁNTAS VECES … ?

Ejemplo:

How many times ( how often) do I have to tell you not to do that? (=¿cuántas veces tengo que decirte que no hagas eso?)

68) IN RECORD TIME (es de agradecer que alguna de todas estas expresiones de tiempo la podamos traducir sin complicaciones del inglés al español, ‘and vice versa’) 🤗

Ejemplos:

They completed the work in record time (=acabaron el trabajo en un tiempo record).

I got to work in record time -all the traffic lights were green (=llegué al trabajo en un tiempo record, todos los semáforos estaban en verde).

69) IN ONE WEEK’S/TWO MONTHS’ (etc.) TIME

Traducción: DENTRO DE/EN UNA SEMANA/EN UN MES (etc.)

Ejemplos:

Do it now please—not in three hours’ time (=hazlo ahora, por favor, y no dentro de tres horas).

We’re going on holiday in one week’s time (=nos vamos de vacaciones en una semana).

I’ll be back in ten minutes’ time (=volveré/estaré de vuelta dentro de diez minutos).

Uso:

En realidad, es lo mismo usar esta frase conectada con la duración del tiempo que simplemente decir “in one week/in two months, etc.” sin añadir el sustantivo ‘time’ al final. El sentido es el mismo.

La diferencia, sin embargo, está en la estructura que escogemos. Y es que usar el genitivo sajón con períodos de tiempo (week, month, years, etc.) le da un toque de nivel a nuestro inglés.

70) IT’S TIME … (dentro del TOP 5 de frases típicas expresiones muy socorridas de tiempo en inglés) ⌛

Traducción: ES HORA DE …

Ejemplos:

I think it’s time to go to bed (=creo que es hora de ir(se) a la cama/de acostarse).

It’s time for lunch (=es hora de comer, es la hora de la comida).

Well, it’s time for us to go to bed (=bueno, es hora de que nos vayamos a la cama).

It’s certainly time you were* in bed. It’s long after your ‘bedtime’ (=desde luego es hora de que te vayas a la cama/deberías estar ya en la cama. Hace rato que deberías estar durmiendo).

*“It’s time you did sth” es la estructura de la última frase. Sería incorrecto decir “it’s time you are in bed”, aunque estemos hablando de un contexto presente.

Seguro que te suena raro, pero esta construcción se usa en inglés para señalar que alguien ‘debería haber hecho algo o haberlo empezado ya’. A menudo se usa para criticar o quejarse de alguna cosa.

Vuelve a mirar todos los 4 ejemplos de arriba. Fíjate que cada frase tiene una estructura ligeramente diferente. Cada una tiene un “pattern” u orden distinto tras la frase “It´s time”. Let’s recap:

73) LONG TIME NO SEE/HEAR

Estilo: informal

Traducción: ¡CUÁNTO TIEMPO (SIN VERTE)!

Ejemplo:

“Hi Molly, long time no see! How have you been? (=hola Molly, ¡cuánto tiempo! ¿Cómo estás/cómo te va? –desde la última vez que nos vimos).

Uso:

Extra expresión coloquial en el inglés hablado, se usa para saludar a alguien que hace tiempo que no ves.

Uso:

A parte de usar cualquiera de estas dos frases, también podrías utilizar las dos siguientes: “nearly always” o “almost every time”. Pero con una frase hecha o idiom en inglés parece que todo suena mejor, ¿verdad?

Uso:

Uso:

El verbo “to drag” significa “arrastrar(se)” y en esta expresión se usa en sentido figurativo para hablar de lo lento que transcurre el tiempo, especialmente cuando estás aburrido.
