if you do not like hype I will not hype this place up. Go with low expectation be prepared to queue for about 20 -30 minutes. Then just enter the past, Full table service, beautiful presentation, lovely atmosphere. This is not an undiscovered jem. Take...for what it now a tourist atttaction. What we loved was once you were in absolutely no pressure to pay and leave we just soaked up the atmosphere and enjoyed the theatre for about 45 minutes, If you want a great coffee and speady service go to Starbucks. We loved our coffee and the cakes were a work of art, As for price cheap for a tourist attraction but more expensive than standard coffee shops. The cafe Central has been serving coffee and cake for over 200 years I guess they know how to do it by now. Judging by the queue I think thay will continue for another 200.More

You may read about queues - we went twice and whilst there was a queue the first time (roughly 2pm on a Sunday) it only took 15-20mins to get in and on the second occasion (10.30 on a Wednesday) there wasn't a queue at all....Either way, if you want to go and sample the actual Viennese lifestyle of whiling away a couple of hours in historic and beautiful surroundings, I believe that you won't find better. We went to several cafés whilst in Vienna and this is the only one we went to twice. Yes, the building is gorgeous and you'll spend a lot of the first half hour simply gawping at the ceiling and marvelling at the splendour of it all, but what really made us go back was that you can have all the finer things (smoked salmon for breakfast, good wine, exquisite cakes) at a very reasonable price. You can also reserve tables if you know how to contact them, though we weren't able to do this from England. The service was consistently brilliant and the whole experience was truly memorable. Twice. They've done a really good job of ensuring that they've not become victims of their own success and managed to keep all the style and quality that it is rightly famous for. You should go.More

Short queue to get in as it was mid January. The top hatted bouncer gracefully organised the entrance and departure of each customer. We had a melange coffee each and shared a wonderful big slice of apple strudel which cost about £15. Beautiful building and...people made a fascinating late morning break after enjoying the Spanish riding school training a few minutes walk away. One of Vienna’s best.More

Worst coffee ever! BUT delicious cakes Save your money and skip the coffees for €7.5 a cup, hot chocolate was also bad - for €7.5 you can do real chocolate NOT POWDER:( Cakes were really delicious, and way cheaper than drinks. Average for €5. The...line moves not to slow but still 20mins is a lot to wait in the cold. No reservations during winter. Skip coffees and get a takeaway cake, the raspberry brownie cake(red on the photos) was very good!More

We made the line along with another 20ish people before being granted a seat in an over-crowded cafe that looked more like a cafeteria. no gluten free options except one soup. Staff disinterested and not eager to help. Avoid if gluten free.

We visited cafe central in January 2020 during our short visit to Vienna. We waited for about 15 minutes as it's quite a popular place because of its history. What was really worth the trouble was the architecture of the cafe and the really talented pianist who...played classical music.I tried zacher torte but was quite disappointed as it seemed stale and dry. Other than its overpriced desserts and beverages, you should visit it if you don't mind waiting to admire its decoration and enjoy some quality live music.More

Amazing place and unique. The guy in the entrance was very happy and pleasant. Desserts-sweets top quality but chocolate was like supermarket quality, this needs to be changed!!! This made my criteria of 3 stars. Also the waiters need to be more pleasant and happy,...it's nice to smile Austrian people !!!!!!More

The queue for Cafe Cetral is rather long and if you want a table for 2 you may be in the queue for 30min or more. But bigger tables for 4 and 8 people get in very quickly! But be aware if one of your...group is absent and out shopping you will be passed over. The cakes are picture perfect and we had quite an animated waiter which was awesome as I found some waiters in Vienna very aloof! Their prices are high! And obviously it is very busy! I would suggest to be there as they open! But there are far better coffee shops with more ambiance and I think as it's the oldest coffee shop in vienna it is a must do or must see and therefore remains very busy.More

This is one of the "obligatory"cafes that visitors go to when in Vienna and yes it has spectacular setting that in the Instagram age is one of the main reasons people go and the cakes secondary! We queued for less than 10minutes for coffee and...cake on our last morning, a Monday in late January. To be honest the setting and the anticipation is what makes this a "must visit" but you could have just as good a cake and coffee in other restaurants that feature less on the numerous travel blogs and review sites. While we enjoyed our visit, good coffee and lovely cakes it was more like a box ticked on our Vienna visit. Enjoy if you do go but don't feel like you have missed out if you do give it a miss.More

Nothing special ! Nice deco . The food , sweets were nothing special in comparison with the reputation of the brand . The waiter asked us to give them a 10% tip whereas in Vienna is not obligatory ( by the way the receipt did...not say a word about the tip ) . I would not go there again . There are other cafes and restaurants in Vienna which are much much better and cheaper of courseMore

Visited without a reservation around 11am, cafe was very busy but I was seated quickly. Ordered the legendary Sachertorte and a Wiener Melange coffee, both of which were served quickly and tasted excellent. My only gripe was that the cake was under 5 euros but...the coffee was OVER 5 euros, having said that the combined price for the two was acceptable.More

After seeing online reviews we were very excited to visit this cafe. After waiting in a long line that moved fairly quickly we were seated in a beautiful back room of the cafe. The interior decor and high ceilings are beautiful and itself may be...worth the visit however the food was disappointing, we had a pumpkin soup that tasted more like a tomato soup (not bad but not great) my wife had a Caesar salad that did not taste anywhere close to a ceasar I had the Austrian Toast (which had a fishy taste despite no seafood) we both had cappuccinos that were less than average. We were very excited by the dessert as this place is mostly marketed as a dessert place. We each ordered a beautifully presented dessert that are shown in their desolations case but were underwhelmed by the taste. Overall I would recommend going in to see the beautiful interior and perhaps taking a coffee with a dessert but in my opinion lunch money is better spent elsewhere.More

The Cafe Central in Vienna in not your average coffee house. It is housed in a beautiful old building that harkens back to the 1890's. It can be crowded during the day but for an after dinner stop for dessert and coffee the wait is...minimal. Simple food like sandwiches are available but they are average at best. Go for the coffee and pastry.More

It’s always busy there, so be prepared to wait in the queue outside for about 15-20 mins or even half hour. The restaurant is setup to deal with big crowds though so they do try to get you a table as quick as possible. The...interiors of the restaurant is beautifully and artistically done. Food wise - I think the prices were reasonable and quality was good or just average (not fantastic), you should go there to discover the history of the restaurant and the vibes, not really for the food or you might be disappointed. Service was okay, I still had to wait for a bit to get the menu and order etc as the waiter disappeared at times due to the high number of customers. Gets a bit loud and chaotic or stuffy too.More

I didn’t gave high expectations really. I’ve been to something nearly identical in Budapest and was left wondering why I stood in line for cake. Clearly I like cake enough to line up for it. I wanted to try the Sachertorte (it’s a chocolate cake...with apricot) since it seems to be a thing in Vienna so I got that and some tea. My partner got a raspberry brownie (more on that in a minute) and an iced chocolate. I’d have to say that i thought it was weird that since all these things are made already (except the iced chocolate) it wouldn’t take long for them to reach into the case and put these items on a plate. I was wrong. The iced chocolate was the first thing that came. It was pretty much melted vanilla ice cream with a hint of chocolate. So my chocolate cake cake out along with the brownie. The cake was so dry I could barely swallow it without water. The water came in a glass that smelled like a wet dog by the way. I didn’t finish my dog water or my cake and was patiently waiting for this tea that apparently was being harvested as I waited there for 20 minutes. This brownie though. That was worth lining up for. It was amazing and looked as good as it tasted. Eventually my tea came out. They didn’t steep it for me. Just brought a tea bag still in a plastic wrapper with a tea kettle with barely enough water in for the tea bag to reach it. I know bc as I let the tea sit in there for a few minutes when I went to pour a cup only water came out. All that being said there are a ton of options here and they all look really beautiful. I’m sure I’d be writing a nicer review had I ordered something else all togetherMore
