Sam Hunt Scores Milestone 10th No.1 With ‘Outskirts’

Sam Hunt earned his milestone 10th No.1 at country radio this week as his latest single, “Outskirts,” secured the top spot on both the Billboard Country Airplay and Country Aircheck/ Mediabase charts.

Hunt co-wrote the nostalgia-filled tune alongside his frequent collaborators Zach Crowell, Jerry Flowers, and Josh Osborne. 

As “Outskirts” was climbing the charts, the superstar opened up about the possibility of another No.1 and admitted he wasn’t sure if this one was going to make it to the top. 

“It is always as special, because you’ll have one, and then immediately you’ll think, ‘could I have another one?’ This will be, as an artist, number 10 for me. So, when ‘Outskirts’ had a slow start, I thought, ‘Well, maybe I’ll never hit 10.’ Well, I was already coming to terms with not reaching that number,” he shared. 

Why Earning A 10th No.1 Is A Career Milestone For Hunt

The diamond-selling star then reflected on a piece of advice he received early on that has stayed with him ever since.

“If it does, it will be 10, so that will make this one even more special, because I always heard, I remember folks told me back in the day, ‘You really haven’t solidified a career that you can tour with longevity until you have 10 number ones.’ And I remember thinking, gol’, that seems like an impossible task, and now sitting at nine, one away,” he confessed. “In the back of my mind, I still hear that and think maybe I’ll be on sturdy ground if I can get number 10 and I can tour for the next several years, if that’s what I end up doing. So, yeah, this one’ll be a special one, a milestone.”

Locked Up EP Out Now

“Outskirts” is featured on Hunt’s new Locked Up EP, which was released on April 5. This project also includes the title track, which the superstar recently brought to life in a Johnny Cash-inspired music video featuring his wife, Hannah.

The clip, filmed at Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Petros, TN, bears a resemblance to Cash’s iconic 1968 concert at Folsom Prison.

“It’s a really cool prison…It’s closed down now and it has a real spooky feel to it, but it fit the aesthetic for that Folsom Prison, Johnny Cash look. And that concert he did was such a piece of country music history, Americana, it’s a piece of Americana and just something cool to draw off of,” Hunt recently explained to Country Now and other outlets. “So we decided to go ahead and do it and get the suits and the outfits and we got a whole bunch of guys from the town come and dress up like inmates. It made for a really fun experience.”

Locked Up Tour Launches This Summer

After wrapping his arena-headlining Ourskirts Tour this spring, the father of two will have the opportunity to enjoy a bit of downtime before returning to the road for his 20-city Lock Up Tour this summer. Kicking off on June 28 in Bend, Ore, the trek features Sam Hunt with special guests Russell Dickerson, George Birge, and Dalton Dover on select dates and runs through September 28.
