Editorial Reviews
Crazy Horse is probably best known as Neil Young's backup group. They issued a number of fine albums in their own right. Scratchy: Complete Reprise Recordings, contains their complete body of work for Reprise Records.

It seems that the consensus is that the first album, entitled Crazy Horse, is better than Loose, their second album. But I say there's equal merit to both of them. The first album might have the more memorable songs ("Gone Dead Train", "I Don't Want To Talk About It", and Neil Young's own "Dance, Dance, Dance"), but their follow-up has some sweet songs as well: "Try", "All Alone Now," and "Going Home" are just a few. The rest of these songs are equally impressive and enjoyable. Strongly recommended.
mymediaworld is a horrible seller
Album is five star.
This is a relatively inexpensive reissue of the Rhino/ Handmade set released a few years ago. It contains the first two albums by Crazy Horse, plus alternate takes of "Dirty, Dirty", "Scratchy" (Takes 1-3) with lots of Whitten's guitar, "Dear Song Singer" an acoustic slowy, "Downtown" (long version) again where Whitten gets to stretch out, and "Susie's Song" (Takes 1-5), all from the "Crazy Horse" sessions. Plus a Neil Young favorite, "When You Dance You Can Really Love", a radio spot, and two songs by Danny & The Memories--"Can't Help Loving That Girl", and "Don't Go" from the early 60's. The 3 "stars" is because the second album doesn't hold up to the band's first album, which was a great first release. But having all the extra tracks boosts this edition to between 3 1/2 and 4 "stars". You may hear things differently.
The booklet lists song titles, composers, and band personnel for both albums, and the front and back cover artwork for both albums is also here--that's it. The sound is pretty good overall--neither album was ever really crisp and clean sounding--which is apparently what they wanted. Whitten's guitar is appropriately rough and edgy sounding, and the rhythm section sounds like the Crazy Horse we've all come to like.
By now most everybody knows that the first album is the one to own. The second album has George Whitsell and Greg Leroy on guitars and vocals in place of Whitten--and it shows. Plus John Blanton is in for the great Jack Nitzsche on keyboards. But the chance to have all this material for a good price makes this set worth owning. As I write this, this new edition seems hard to find. But hopefully it will become more readily available in the very near future.
So if you've been waiting for this set to be reissued--this is your chance. It's worth owing if you're a fan (like me) of Crazy Horse. It's just too bad that Whitten couldn't control his bad habits. Can you imagine what he and Neil Young could've done together by now? And what about Whitten and Crazy Horse? Whoa.
