What might we dare to expect from an actor's autobiography, even one from a star as personable as George Sanders? In the case of Memoirs of a Professional Cad, we possibly get more than we deserve. George Sanders undoubtedly led a colorful, glamorous, and even action-packed life, spanning the peak years of Hollywood's golden age. But the greatest joy of his memoirs is how funny they are and how penetrating their author's wit.
George's early childhood was spent in Tsarist Russia, before he was obliged to flee with his family to England on the eve of the Russian Revolution. George was eventually asked to leave South America following a duel of honor and was forced to take up acting for a living.
Memoirs of a Professional Cad has much to say about Hollywood and the stars George Sanders worked with and befriended, not to mention the irrepressible Tsa Tsa Gabor, who became his wife. But at heart it is less a conventional autobiography and more a Machiavellian guide to life, and the art of living, from a man who knew a thing or two on the subject.
Memoirs of a Professional Cad stands today as one of the classic Hollywood memoirs, from one of its most original, enduring, and inimitable stars.

vocabulary, this book is for you. Otherwise, not much to it.
First of all, Tyrone didn't die during a sword fight with George. They were due to film the scene but word reached him that Tyrone wasn't feeling well and the day's shoot was canceled. Sanders went to Tyrone's trailer to check on him and found him clenched but saying that it was just bursitis and he'd be fine the next day. Well, an hour or so later he was shocked to hear that Ty was dead.
His funeral was packed but Sanders said it was a surreal, almost undignified affair, with Irving Berlin's "Always" playing, and Loretta Young dressed as a Chinese woman from a set, to the point no one recognized her.
He also said that Tyrone wasn't practical about money and spent it like he knew he wouldn't live long. But that's about all he had to say about Power.
My only complaint is the book is too short. He talks about his youth and coming of age, and pulls no punches. He did not do very well. Hollywood was something he stumbled on, but what a great fit.
I love his descriptions of Hollywood and his views on working there, dating, marriage and so many other things. He viewed life in such a realistic way. He made me laugh with his observations.
We truly lost a genius when he tragically took his life. If you like Hollywood biographies, yuou will like this one.

I discovered a very interesting person! Even if you don't know him or his work l think you will enjoy his company. The conversational style of the chapters brings his distinctive voice to life. It's like listening to him relaxing in an armchair after a long, boozy dinner party as he tells "Tales from Hollywood's Golden Era".
He has an extraordinary, erudite vocabulary, a truly witty sense of humour and a graceful personal modesty disguised as irony. He gently reveals some of the famous people he knew, worked alongside or married, without being judgmental. He habitually downplays his own skills and accomplishments.
Although some of his opinions are politically dated he is open and honest about his views and did not expect or need anyone's approval. He accepts his own shortcomings and other peoples'. He also has a healthy perspective about what was important to him in life. An intelligent man who enjoyed his life and who was both amused by, and tolerant of, people in general.
