Back in the late sixties when Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood started making records together, I paid them no mind. No one in my junior high crowd would have ever admitted liking a song of theirs let alone owning one of their albums! They were considered even swabbier than the hopelessly faux hip Sonny and Cher, and to own a record of theirs would have invited endless ridicule. But times and tastes change, and in the last several years I have come to appreciate the multi-talented Hazlewood in many ways and have assembled a collection of his records ranging from his earliest to the most recent.
Since I had never heard of this CD before, I didn't know what to expect when I encountered and ordered this on amazon and did not even know until I read the reviews that Nancy and Lee 3 is a new collection of songs! I just assumed it was a reissued version of an album issued on the heels of their second one back in the seventies. And while it is not the first time I have heard them together, this is the first time I have heard an entire album of their songs together. And do you know what? Its fun, fun, fun!
One of the reviewers complained about too much sex. Well, what have these two ever been about but sex? Hazlewood is famous for his sly innuendo which once raised a lot of eyebrows but today seems a little playful and quaint. And Nancy has from the first cultivated a sex kitten image, probably at Hazlewood's behest. The songs Don't Let Go, Loving You Loving Me, and Is Making A Little Love Out Of The Question? contain prime examples of Hazlewood's double entendres. Then there's the overtly sexual Gypsies and Indians, heh heh heh. And while those are entertaining, they aren't the best songs on the CD.
My favorites are Goin' Down Rockin', Barricades & Brickwalls, the plaintive She Won't, the rollicking Pack Saddle Saloon, and Nancy's solo mix version of the Hungry Years. Baritone Hazlewood is in great form and Sinatra sounds much better than I ever thought she would, so good in fact that I am tempted to try out a few of her solo albums. She certainly has proven that she is more than just Frank's daughter who has a record contract for that reason only! I'm looking forward to reissues of their first two albums.
Hazlewood's legend has grown in the last fifteen years as more young musicians have discovered his work. If you are here because of Lee, check this out and you may find that you like Nancy as well. If you came to this only as a fan of Nancy Sinatra, try this CD and discover why Lee Hazlewood has become a dark hero of the indie rock generation.

Back in the early 70's when I was in my mid teens and was busy learning to love everything from Lindisfarne to Led Zeppelin, the first Nancy & Lee album was one of the few things in my parent's record collection that I could stand and I used to play it occasionally when having dinner with them instead of persisting with my efforts to "educate" them with the Moody Blues and Elton John. I heard nothing more about this record until I was working in China in the late 90's when "Summer Wine" was often one of the very few songs in English at some of the Karaoke bars that I got dragged into by some of my subcontractors.
After leaving China, I forgot about the album for another 10 years until I accidentally came across the digital remaster as an MP3 download. I bought it just for old times' sake and was seriously impressed by the quality of the recording, not only on Summer Wine but also on songs like "Some Velvet Morning" and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" where Lee's vocals are really amazing. Admittedly, my rather expensive Cyrus hi-fi probably helped, but my mother and my younger brother were also seriously impressed.
We were sat talking one night and wondered whether Ms. Sinatra and Mr. Hazlewood had ever produced any more albums, so the next day I started researching the subject on the internet. There are in fact 2 more albums, Nancy & Lee Again (from 1972) and the one that is supposed to be the subject of this review, Nancy & Lee 3 issued in 2004 after a 32 year gap. Nancy & Lee Again is very difficult to find on CD (although there are plenty of vinyl LP's available on eBay in the US and the UK) so I am still looking for it, but Nancy & Lee 3 was much easier to find, I bought a copy and hence this review.
There is 1 excellent track on 3 "She Won't", which is reminiscent of some of the best tracks on 1 and earns the CD it's 4th star, but the rest of the CD is very much middle of the road stuff rather than the excellent stuff like Summer Wine or Velvet Morning. I would conclude by saying that the CD is worth buying if you can find it at a reasonable price, but that the £126 (about $200) that the CD is currently selling for on Amazon UK is not worth it and prices it out of reach of all but completists.

I very seldom write reviews but this time I had to. I have been a Nancy Sinatra fan for a very long time but I only knew Lee Hazelwood from a couple of songs they made. I missed out on a lot of grat songs until recently when I bought my first Lee Hazelwood c.d. titled cake. I am a HUGH fan of both of them now and the songs they have made together are truly fun to listen to . This disc Nancy and Lee 3 is a very unique and special compact disc. It is an import (mine came from Autralia ) but I bought here at Amazon. I have played over and over again . I do not think it was ever released here in the U.S. bUY IT you will love it !

I like this album almost as much as Nancy and Lee's 1rst album and found it superior to their 2nd effort Nancy and Lee Again. It has some good songs and was recorded only a few years before Lee Hazelwood's death. I wish Nancy didn't call him Barton (his first name but not one that was commonly used by the singer) in some of the songs--when she called him Lee on the other albums, but it's a small thing. I particularly liked their rendition of "Save the Last Dance for Me" but could have lived without two versions of "The Hungry Years".
All in all if you enjoyed the duo's other albums, you'll like this one as well--the 2nd album was more quirky--but this one has more of the spark of the original Nancy and Lee and was (I think) a lot more fun than Nancy and Lee Again.

Nancy and Lee got together again and came up with a great album that got overlooked by the public.
Their voices show a bit of there age but it was worth the wait.

Love these two but this album sounds like country dive bar karaoke. Instead I'd suggest Nancy's Greatest Hits or the first Nancy & Lee.

A mystery why this never had a UK release
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 17, 2009
This was the third and last album that Nancy Sinatra and the late Lee Hazlewood recorded together, the first two being in the late 60s and early 70s while this one was the result of a get-together in 2004 in Nashville.
There are some great tracks on here and Nancy's voice seems, if anything, better than in the early years. The same cannot be said of Lee's but he growls and talks his way through his parts in a totally acceptable way. Their re-work of the Drifters hit "Save The Last Dance For Me" is worthy of special mention.
Of special interest to me, as a life-long Duane Eddy fan is Track 12, a song written by Duane Eddy and Billy Falcon called "She Won't". Duane's great low-string accompaniment on this certainly makes this track outstanding.
I find it amazing that this album was never issued here in the UK but it was released in Australia. An absolute mystery - but that's record companies for you! Thanks to Amazon for making it possible to import it from Oz.

Cool !!!!Fantastisch!!!!Eben Nancy & Lee
