Set in the impressive former 1930s Hitchin ballroom, on the first floor, Hermitage Rd restaurant & Bar boasts a seasonal, award winning and sustainable premium food offer, from the awarding winning ACI team and a bar renowned for it's bespoke cocktails, quality wine and beer range. We have expanded and very excited to bring to Hitchin a new Oyster and Champagne Bar, featuring the best of British produce, English sparkling of course, collaborating with award winning Nyetimber. In addition to oysters we serve a variety of small plates, perfect for a pre dinner glass/snack. Private hire also available. Located on the ground floor by the entrance to the restaurant, open Friday & Saturdays from 5pm available for walk-ins only.

We were a group of 5 celebrating a big birthday we had a lovely evening staff were very friendly and helpful with cake and service, bar staff were great and made some amazing cocktails food was really good lots to choose from and catered for all dietary requirements. The lady on reception was really lovely friendly and helpful my only negative would be that there was a big party that took over the whole of the bar area so we didn’t have anywhere to sit for our pre drinks but other than that great evening.

really wonderful atmosphere and the staff are just delightful . The food was ok , not as good as my last visit and i did think the mains were a bit pricey - well mine was as it was mostly rice with spices and a few mushrooms - but then i should have gone for the set menu which is excellent value for money..... For a cool night out in a great venue with lovely staff and fab cocktails i will definitely be back x

First time we've been for dinner outside of work events. The food was really nice and the staff were very attentive. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and they gave us a complimentary plate of petit fours after the meal. My burger was lovely and my wife enjoyed her smoked haddock thermidor.

We loved our booth type seating by the window. The two women serving were delightful and very competent. The menu has something to offer everyone and varied in style. I started with the king prawn cocktail and the prawns were plentiful. Others had the Korean chicken and calamari - all very good. Our mains were equally good - can recommend the king prawn jambalaya. A lovely environment and people who know their job.

The food was very good, although there was some foil in the chicken dish, the service was a little slow and some drinks were forgotten, drinks for other tables were also brought to us twice

We had another excellent meal and service on Tuesday lunch time to celebrate my mother in laws 84th birthday. Not till I got home did I realise you charged me £5 for nearly a pint of lemonade. I had 2 so actually a tenner. 😔. I say nearly a pint because I had lime cordial top which was another 40p. That does NOT encourage lunch visit and drivers. Most disappointed. The food and service was excellent

Wow lovely place to go to is the HERM or the Hermitage 😃 The food is gorgeous I always have the tasty honey chicken and coconut rice plus a side dish of tempura corgette absolutely beautiful never tasted rice so good all cooked to perfection My husband always goes for the very tender bar b q ribs again all cooked to perfection 😋Bought our son and daughter and there partners this time they all throughly enjoyed the food too Fantastic bar also with a great atmosphere you almost feel like your in London Half/way through the evening you even a DJ playing the sounds of the 80s What more can I say we love coming here and can’t wait to return Lindsey & Kevin XX

Great staff and ambience but had to send back my steak as it was totally raw in the middle when I ordered medium rare and even when it came back it was not very good. Disappointing to pay full price for substandard food eaten after everyone else.

A great customer service response to a large party booking made this event really enjoyable. Food was served to all 17 of us simultaneously, and a couple of minor issues dealt with very smoothly. Thanks to all the staff on Sunday afternoon who helped make our visit so pleasant.

Our brunch was nice, however, the portions were on the small side, especially for a brunch, and food took more than 40 mins to arrive. Because of this, it didn't feel like great value. We had a nice apology from the manager for the delay, and the team were pleasant, but we were left for a long time without being looked after and still felt a bit hungry afterwards even though we're not massive eaters. Overall, we were a bit disappointed, particularly as we have enjoyed eating there in the past.

The food and drinks were amazing. However, there were too few staff which meant everything was slow(with the exception of food). We were planning on another drink after dinner but it took so long we ended up just getting the bill. The pace was wrong also food came before drinks so a cocktail to start didn’t really work. As I say the food was excellent but the service and lack of communication between bar, kitchen and waitstaff kinda ruined it for us

Usually food here is pretty good but Sunday Roasts were very average. We had 3 different meats, pork and chicken were dry, beef OK but nothing special.. Vegetables were good except the potatoes which were overcooked. Yorkshire puds were large dry/rubbery and tasteless. Expect better when they are priced at between £22 and £25!

Set lunch with three options from each category- starters, mains and desserts . We tried steak today which is very good. Korean chicken as the starters with a delicious sauce. Will definitely come back again

It was a Monday night and so wasn’t expecting much of an atmosphere but it was fairly busy. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly and we didn’t have to wait on anything. All of our food was excellent. You have come up trumps again!!

First time and nearly left thinking it was the cafe downstairs. Upstairs the restaurant is the sort of place you see in London's trendy areas or in the US and whish you had places like that near you - well you do now - Hermitage. Food was better than most, Shared lamb was perfectly cooked and even the roasties were good! (never say that). The carpaccio was nice but too much truffle - would much prefer a little olive oil and lemon. Calamari would be good but ours was overdone. Desserts (Brulee, cheesecake very nice) Only issue was the service, Really nice people and were all working hard but constantly trying to remove things before we were finished. Twice on the mains once on the desserts and many times removing glasses. Otherwise great

We ordered from the Sunday set menu. Overall the food was good. Delicious prawn cocktail starter but too much thousand island dressing. My roast pork was very dry. There could have been more Gracey or some apple sauce which there may have been but I wasn’t told. Service was excellent. My friend said her curry was very spicy and some yoghurt may have been nice.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Heritage Rd Bar and Restaurant, and I must say, the experience was notably delightful in several aspects. From the moment we stepped in, the warmth and attentiveness of the staff were apparent, setting a welcoming tone for the evening. The culinary journey began with a prawn cocktail, which, without exaggeration, was one of the best I’ve ever enjoyed. Each bite was a harmonious blend of fresh prawns and a perfectly balanced sauce, promising an exceptional start to the meal. This promise was further fulfilled by the main course, a steak cooked to such perfection it nearly melted in my mouth. The chef’s expertise in achieving the ideal temperature and texture deserves every commendation. However, there was an unexpected turn to the evening. Unbeknownst to us, it was a DJ night at the restaurant. While I appreciate the attempt to create a lively atmosphere, the reality was akin to being in a nightclub. The volume of the music necessitated raising our voices to merely converse, detracting from the otherwise pleasant dining experience. It was disappointing to discover that this event was not advertised on their website, as a heads-up would have been appreciated to set the right expectations for the evening. In summary, while the culinary excellence and the staff’s pleasant demeanor at Heritage Rd Bar and Restaurant are beyond reproach, the oversight in communicating special events like a DJ night can lead to a mismatch in patron expectations. A quieter, more intimate dining experience was anticipated, and I hope in the future, such events are clearly advertised to allow guests to choose their preferred dining atmosphere.
