SAFE: Jack Blocker
Did you know that Jack has apparently been sleep-competing all season? Because he woke the eff up on Sunday, fully coming to life on stage with a rocking performance of Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally.” When the show played footage of Jack from his alt-rock band days, we wondered where he’d been hiding that version of himself, so we were thrilled to see it take the stage tonight. It was commanding, it was high-energy and (most importantly) it was authentic. He’s always been a frontrunner in the competition, but Jack definitely got an extra boost with this one.
TVLINE’S GRADE: “A”
The musician of many faces returned with a silky smooth takes on Adele’s “One and Only,” occasionally growing to some very exciting places. Katy hit the nail on the head — Jack was fully feeling himself tonight, and so were we.
TVLINE’S GRADE: “A”
Abi has got to win this!! Her last few performances have been amazing! So glad we’ve seen her rock side because it’s fantastic!!!
They could have skipped the entire dance part, not sure why they force them to sing songs so out of their genre. With two songs tonight they should have each been allowed to sign a song of their choice and maybe one they wrote. I would have kept Julia over Emmy. Emmy has lots of support she is good but hope she doesn’t make it to the top 3.
I hate to say this but I would be very surprised if she doesn’t win the whole thing. She should’ve been cut weeks ago but being who she is and who her grandma was, she is being carried. 2 people went home tonight when she should’ve been 1 of them. Same last week.
The wrong two were sent home tonight
Agree that she should have been sent home, perhaps last week. Now it is a pop contest for finals. Ali and Jack should be there. But the good news is that their
exposure to this point is enough. I would love to see them in a 3 song sing off.
I’m shocked in some ways … but it’s not voice alone . I love them hard but I do have my favorite !!!true
Emmy does NOT belong in the top 10, let alone 5!! Such a shame that she is being gushed over by the judges and propped up.
Your right I’m surprised she’s still there because she’s not that good, there doing it on her grandma’s name…🤫
Yes she does! Her voice is gorgeous and so is she! Perfect to go forwad♡♡♡
American should award 3rd place Abi Carter
2nd place Jack Blocker , Emmy Russell with a record contract as duet recording stars country music .1st . Tristin Harper , Will Moseley with a record contact as a duet recording stars country music . All 5 stars also appear on tour for American Idol . Members of the Grand Old Opry .
Tristin is the most talented.
Emmy & Mosley will leave next
So glad Triston made it to the top five! Love him! So deserving of this !
I am beginning to think that American Idol is Fixed because Emmy cry baby Russell should have been eliminated a long time ago. If the judges stopped giving her so much Praise for her voice she HAS NOT then the public wouldn’t vote for her. Wa
Actually, if the judges were to give her harsh critiques, then the (older) audience might actually rally to save this person. It goes a while back, but the best clear example of this was season 3 with Jasmine Trias when she cried after feedback and that carrier her over third place, beating then fan-favourite LaToya Jackson.
LOL, Latoya London…Latoya Jackson is Michael Jackson’s sister.
Are you kidding? This OG AI viewer missing Simon’s honest takes. If he were judging, Emmy and Abi would never made it top 5. Last night was THE only night thus far that Abi didn’t go sharp when scream-singing. Her lane is cruise ship piano ballads. Anything else and she goes sharp. It’s quite painful actually. Emmy is ONLY here because of her grandmother’s legacy. And people think Kayko was an industry plant…LOL.
Agree
Don’t get me wrong, I miss the days of harsh critiques, but that also comes with sympathy votes. Pay attention to when and how and who gets feedback if they perform badly, you can always tell.
It’s not really the judges…it’s Loretta Lynn’s social media that encourages viewers to vote for Emmy.
I was just going to say the very same thing. She is Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter that is where the votes are coming from. Had she not been her granddaughter I really believe she would have been voted out already. Plus the judges gushed over a performance that was just okay. You wonder who the producers are pushing. IMO Julia deserved to stay.
Your grades are way too generous. I think a lot of them struggled with movement, singing and breath control. That is something they really should work on. Of course, Emmy didn’t even try to move, which was the whole point of the ‘dance’ genre. It’s like being on Top Chef, and you’re told to make a dish with mushrooms, and you serve them fried chicken. You’d be eliminated, which is what should have happened to Emmy, who took a dance song and slowed it down and didn’t move at all. Whatever. At least Julia tried, but now she’s gone. I’m glad my three favorites are still there: Jack, Abi and Will. But I still miss Kayko and now Julia.
TVLine writers consistently overrate all performances on this and The Voice. How can no song last night rate below a B+? That said, the judges standing o everyone so we’re in an era where saying anything constructive is likely deemed too mean…I really miss the days of actual criticism on this show to build the singers into something greater than they were prior to coming on the show. (What I really miss is writer Michael Slezak’s hot takes which haven’t even happened on Twitter this season which is a huge shame.)
I actually feel like this year, it seems like there are ENOUGH live performance shows (there may not be any more than last season, but it feels like a decent number which has always been my criticism since it moved to ABC), but I can’t watch this show live anymore so thank goodness for the DVR. When every performance get a a standing o from the judges, I can’t even listen to what Katy, Lionel, and Luke have to say. It’s a shame. The show is a shell of its former self. I keep watching out of habit, but I skip over so much.
Yeah, what’s with using a grading scale and then only ever going from A to B? I mean I can see it if it’s an exceptional week but this is every week since I’ve been following this column. I also miss Slezak, he wasn’t afraid to say when he thought something sucked. And even when I disagreed with him I appreciated that he took a stand.
American idol sucks none of the singers in the top 5 are unique who ever wins you will probably not hear from them muchbin the future contestants like Just Sam Fantasha Jordan Sparks had unique voices but none of the top 5 stood out to me also all the contestants with color were eliminated so that tells me something about this show at this point I don’t care who wins that girl Mckency was about the best singer out of the 7 and I knew she would get eliminated mark my word one of the country singers is gonna win or that guy that the idol crew wanted at the auditions will win I’m just done with this show I’m watching the Voice from this point on
Indigenous peoples are represented on Idol with Triston Harper being from the MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians…
Emmy Russell is a horrible singer she should not be in the top 5 Julia should have stayed
I don’t understand how Emmy is still on the show and Faith and Julia are not. Who is voting for her? I hope Abi wins because her voice is way above any other contestants.
I can’t believe Julia was eliminated, who can sing rings around Emmy, who needs a lot more practice and maturity. Just because she’s related to Loretta Lynn doesn’t give her a pass.
Hm. I had a feeling it’d be Julia & McKenna who went home. Julia’s vocals are incredible, but for some reason, it seems like she doesn’t connect/relate to the audience as well as the others. McKenna is awesome, too. Seems like the first song kind of swallowed her up a bit.
It’ll probably be between Will & Tristan, with Will winning, ‘cuz that’s how it ALWAYS goes. Sigh! Sure wish a girl would win this time (Abi!), or even Jack. lol.
Jack is so unique and has improved tremendously, but Tristan Harper lives about 50 miles away, so I gotta take the local southerner!
i do not understand the support for Triston. A very nice kid who’s not ready to be a star, and was out-sung by everyone else tonight, as usual. Sad to see Julia and McKenna go. Best 3 left are Jack, Abi and Will. All 3 of them have potentially big careers ahead.
I agree 100%!!!
I am so disappointed that Julia was voted off. I do not care for either Abi with her high notes or Emmy who I think is boring (She ruined “Shut Up And Dance With Me” in my opinion). I think people vote for her because she is related to Loretta Lynn.
I am glad to see that Will and Triston are in the top 5 and hopefully one of them will win the title.
Can NOT believe Emmy Russell is even on this show. She is absolutely beautiful
(and probably a very nice person) but has as much stage presence as a slug; just painful to watch. It’s disappointing that the show is this “political.” The only reason Emmy Russell is still in the running is because of her famous grandmother. I wish her all good things in life, but she is not American Idol caliber, and it is utterly unfair to the other worthy contestants.
Emmy can’t help it that her grandmother was a legend. And the reason she is still in the competition is that viewers voted her in. Why must you get so upset over a TV show and a popularity contest?
She’s there because Loretta Lynn’s social media encourages people to vote for Emmy…
And what is wrong with that? The show is designed to attract as many votes from fans as possible.
Abi great job awesome sing i hope be win the carter family good to be very i love you so much call me and text 7168703118 cell my contact
donny
I know all the Emmy haters on here will downvote my comment, but I think she has the most unique voice of all of them and probably the best chance of succeeding on the radio. Abi has a good voice but I would never be able to pick it out of a crowd. But I have no illusions about Emmy winning this competition, it will go to one of the mediocre guys with guitars because this is Idol after all.
Love Abi Carter! I think she is a Super Star ⭐️❤️🌻
I think Abi should be the next American idol!! ♥️
Will & Abby, the 3 others are going for 3rd place.
Jack deserved A+. Please get rid of Abi.
How did Julia get eliminated when her scores were better then most.
The girl from Maine should be in the top three sooo sad she got eliminated
These votes are always by popularity and not talent. Abi was the best, followed by Jack, McKenna, and Julia, then Will. The bottom 2 should have been Emmy and Triston.
Week after week I have seen Triston grow he has shown the judge’s how talented he really is for someone 15 years old way beyond his years and in my eyes he’s truly a star my husband and I hope he gets arecording contract he truly deserves it praying for Triston
Emmy is still in it because they allow people to vote so many times. I am guessing there are fan groups for her grandmother and family and they are telling every one to vote. I live in Maine and we had commercials to vote for Julia. Maine has a small population only a million people in the state so she didn’t probably have enough non American Idol fans voting for her. The need to limit it to one vote for each person that is watching the show to get an accurate idea of who is really winning. The judges need to give some real reviews. As someone else pointed out last week when they talk about how they look and don’t mention their singing that is a way of saying they did poorly. I don’t think they need super famous singer judges, I think they need people that will actually be honest. I think the shortened seasons on both Idol and the Voice are to accommodate the judges tours. I don’t watch the show because of the judges.
The right two were eliminated. Julia mumbles and then screams. She needs coaching to improve her performance. And in a group of very similar ladies McKenna was the least likable. JMO
I have to say that IMO there wasn’t a single superstar in this season at all. No one has really stood out as exceptional.
I disagree Toto — are there great singers maybe not but there are definitely some that are relevant and marketable. I think Jack, Will, Triston, Aby could all have songs on the radio and be successful. I think with the right coaching Kaibrienne could be the next Carrie Underwood. This is what AI does better than the Voice. The Voice has lots of more experienced and possibly better singers than AI but more of them are not current that can translate to the radio. That is why the Voice has had very few successes. In the last few years AI has Gabby Barrett and Chace.
Artists are some of the bravest people I know – because they have to learn how to endure critics like all of us who “judge’ their work and talent. It’s so challenging being young and full of hope and then to have people say rude things about you and your talent in a public format. I enjoy watching both The Voice and American Idol and being introduced to new artists. I hope they all can continue to build their lives working in the thing they are most passionate about – music. Keep your heads up kids, you will have to endure these things the rest of your lives, don’t let rude comments and people keep you from creating. You are all so very talented and brave for stepping out in this type of public forum and sharing it with us. Thank you. Much success to you all – not just one of you but you all deserve to win. Sincerely, Denise
