Cairo Waltz

Lovely Old-time waltz attributed to Norman Blake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el4Isl3uOqY

It should really be a 9/8 waltz, but I don’t know how to post that here

I first heard it in a tribute to Angus Grant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0hPhGn0J_g

It was apparently a favourite tune of his in sessions. He recorded it with the Funky String Band https://shooglenifty.bandcamp.com/track/cairo-waltz
There is also a great clip of the Willis brothers playing this - they shift to A after once round the tune.

Re: Cairo

Some of the bars don’t add up.
The third full bar should read E3G 3(E2D The last two notes are part of a triplet.
Same goes for bar 5 of the A part and bars 1, 3 and 5 of the B part. That converts it to the equivalent of a 9/8 waltz. I have tried to adjust this in a second setting.

Re: Cairo

That should read E3G 3(E2E2)D The tied E note makes it the correct length.

Re: Cairo

So, after northernmunkeh made his comment about the bars not adding up, is it safe to assume the ABC has been fixed? I am too new to notation to know if it is correct but sometimes I can puzzle out the tune from the sheets. My friends fling endless feces when I bring a new tune that I have learned incorrectly!

Re: Cairo

I would have to double check later, but it looks as though there may be one too many notes in bars 3 & 5 of the first part, and the same thing for bars 1 & 5 of the second part.

Re: Cairo

The problem with the timing is because this should really be a 9/8 waltz. Each beat contains 3 quavers
In the B part, first bar, the first two beats are E3G (or in 9/8 would be E5G), the last beat is a triplet

I’ve tried editing that, but the ABC notation does something weird to the triplet that is even more confusing

Re: Cairo

Maybe put it under slip jigs to get the 9/8 time signature, then in comments people will see it’s actually a waltz.

Re: Cairo

Thanks NFldWhistler. I’ve done that

This is a 9/8 waltz, but down as a slip jig to get the 9/8 timing
hopefully the first version of the tune above is now right

(some of the above comments and other versions of the tune may not now make sense. apologies for the confusion)

Re: Cairo

(Now badged as a waltz again, but with the metre fixed at 9/8. Thanks NfldWhistler for the suggestion)
