Seriously, this recipe for Instant Pot Jasmine Rice produces perfect, fluffy rice just like you would expect from a rice maker. But let's be honest, you can do a whole lot more with an Instant Pot than just make rice! (I am looking at you perfect hard-boiled eggs, shredded chicken breast, and homemade yogurt!!!)
And the best part of this Instant Pot Jasmine Rice Recipe? Just like when you make Instant Pot Dried Beans or Instant Pot Brown Rice, requires VERY little effort. Rinse, Dump. Set the Cooking Time. Walk Away. Tada! Perfectly cooked rice!
Tips for Perfect Instant Pot Jasmine Rice
While I will break down the steps in more detail below, here are the important steps to remember when making Instant Pot Jasmine Rice.
- Rinse your rice well before pressure cooking.
- Use a 1:1 ratio of rice to liquid.
- Cook for 3 minutes on HIGH pressure.
- Allow for pressure to release naturally.
- Fluff with a fork after cooking.
Let's Break Down How to Make Instant Pot Jasmine Rice
While this is an incredibly simple recipe, if you are unfamiliar with cooking in an Instant Pot or the functions of your Instant Pot, be sure to start with How to Use an Instant Pot for the best results on this and future recipes. You will find the full recipe in detail in the recipe card below.
Rinse Rice
Place your rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under running water for 1-2 minutes. This is CRUCIAL. Rinsing rice helps to remove the excess starch on the grains of rice, ensuring that the grains don't clump together when cooking.
Use 1:1 Ratio of Rice to Liquid
For every one cup of rice, add one cup of liquid of your choice (broth, stock, water, juice, etc.) into the inner pot and add the rinsed rice and a pinch of salt. Using a wooden spoon or spatula to gently push the rice down into the liquid, so that it is fully submerged in the liquid. This will ensure even cooking.
Do Not Use the Rice Button
DO NOT USE THE RICE BUTTON to cook rice. The rice function on some models defaults to low pressure. It is always best to use the manual or pressure cook function to control the time and pressure yourself and set to cook for 3 minutes on high pressure.
Let Pressure Release Naturally
Once the cooking time has elapsed, allow the pressure to release naturally for at least 15 minutes. This means to just let your pressure cooker be (it is okay on Keep Warm) once the cooking time has passed until the pressure dissipates on its own and the lid unlocks. This will keep the rice fluffy and moist.
Fluff Rice with a Fork
NEVER EVER stir cooked rice with a spoon, instead you want to gently fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains. . A fork separates the rice grains without the rice breaking or crushing the grains up.
What Type or Rice is Best?
While this is a recipe for Jasmine rice, the process and timing will work with you need long-grain white rice, such as Jasmine or Basmati rice. I prefer Jasmine rice for its buttery floral notes, but any long-grain white rice will work using these directions. Do not use instant or par-boiled white rice, as the results will not be the same. Instant Pot Jasmine Rice can be used in endless ways. From a simple side dish to stir-fries to using in casseroles, this white rice recipe will be a staple at your house! Below are some of my favorite ways to use rice.
- To Complement: Serve rice as a base for Instant Pot Teriyaki Chicken, Instant Pot Beef and Broccoli, Instant Pot Red Beans and Rice, Chicken Asparagus Stir Fry, Hunan Chicken, or Stir-Fried Chicken and Bok Choy to soak up all the delicious sauces from the dishes.
- Use Leftovers: Use cold rice to make Homemade Fried Rice in minutes.
- For a Rice Bowl: Top Instant Pot Jasmine rice with Instant Pot Barbacoa, Taco meat, or Chicken Shawarma for a hearty rice bowl.
- In Casseroles: Add the cooked rice to casseroles such as Broccoli Cheese Rice Casserole or Creamy and Cheesy Chicken and Rice.
Ideas for Seasoning Jasmine Rice
This is a very basic recipe for jasmine rice, making it the perfect base for endless dishes. However, feel free to add seasonings and/or butter to the rice as desired. Below are some suggestions.
- Buttered Rice: For a rich, buttery taste you can opt to add 1 to 3 tablespoons of butter before or after pressure cooking. If adding your butter before pressure cooking, be sure to add the butter last, to prevent a burn notice. If adding after, simply add and let the butter melt while fluffy the rice with the fork.
- Tex-Mex Rice: You can follow my recipe Instant Pot Spanish Rice, or simply add 2 teaspoons of taco seasoning to the rice before pressure cooking for a simpler, yet still flavorful Tex-Mex style rice.
- Cajun Rice: Add 2 teaspoons of Cajun seasoning to your rice before pressure cooking and finish with 1-2 teaspoons of hot sauce for an additional kick after pressure cooking.
- Cilantro Lime Rice: Follow my recipe for Instant Pot Cilantro Lime Rice, which adds in fresh lime juice, lime zest, and minced cilantro after pressure cooking for a copycat version of Chipotle's famous rice.
- Mushroom Rice: Add 1 tablespoon of Dried Onion Soup Mix and a 6-ounce can of drained, sliced mushrooms to the Instant Pot on top of the rice before pressure cooking.
Storage/Reheating Tips for Rice
It is crucial to cool rice fully before placing it into a storage container, as this will help prevent bacteria from growing. It is also important to not leave rice out at room temperature for longer than one hour, as it is very moist, making it a perfect breeding ground for bacteria to grow quickly. To quickly cool the rice, spread it out on a sheet pan and place it in the refrigerator to cool quickly or cool at room temperature for 15-30 minutes.
- Refrigerate: Transfer the cooled rice into an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
- Freeze: Alternatively, place the rice into a freezer-safe container and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- Reheat: To reheat refrigerated or defrosted rice, place the rice in a heat-safe container. Sprinkle rice with 1-2 teaspoons of water. Reheat in the microwave, in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the rice is hot. Or, reheat the rice in the Instant Pot by using the pot-in-pot method and heating for 1 minute on high pressure.
Instant Pot Rice FAQs
Yes! As long as you do not fill your instant pot more than ½ full when cooking rice. You need to leave room for the rice to expand when pressure cooking.
For an 8-quart Instant Pot, you need to use a minimum of 1-½ cups of jasmine rice. For a 3 or 6-quart Instant Pot, you need to use a minimum of 1 cup of rice.

Instant Pot Jasmine Rice
Ingredients

Instructions
- Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse the rice under running water for about 2 minutes.

- Place the lid on the instant pot and be sure the venting knob is sealed. Set the cooking time by hitting manual or pressure cook and use the +/- buttons to set the cooking time to 3 minutes on High Pressure.
- Once the cooking time has elapsed, allow the pressure to release naturally for at least 10-15 minutes. It is okay to leave the pressure cooker on the keep warm function.
- After the pressure has been released remove the lid from the pressure cooker. Fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains without breaking them apart. Serve as desired.
