“An extraordinary story by Vita Sackville-West.… This tale of a fashionable creature who flits in and out of fairy tales and historical epochs is made exquisite by Kate Baylay’s art-deco-style illustrations.” —Wall Street Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Historic Footnote
Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2023
Vita Sackville-West was invited to contribute to the miniature 'palace' dollhouse created for Queen Mary. The handwritten, leather-bound min-book she wrote for the project, sat for decades upon the shelves of the dollhouse's miniature royal library until it was recently printed up in regular size and complimented with a stunning set of 1920s style illustrations depicting the Elvin-like heroine dressed in the height of '20s fashion (imagine Erté at his fashion best). Knowing what we do of Vita, it will come as no surprise that there are parallels to be drawn between the main character in this little fantasy story, and that of the main character to be found in Woolf's ORLANDO. If you are fascinated by little literary footnotes and short, child-like stories from a unique historic context, you'll enjoy this book.
