What are you reading? Untranslated edition - Apr 29

Weekly

Welcome to the weekly "What are you reading? Untranslated edition" thread!

This is intended to be a general chat thread on visual novels you read in Japanese with a focus on the visual novels you've been reading recently. A new thread is posted every Monday.

A visual novel being translated does not mean it's not allowed to be posted about here. The only qualifier is that you are reading it in Japanese.

Use spoiler tags liberally!

Always use spoiler tags in threads that are not about one specific visual novel. Like this one!

  • They can be posted using the following markdown: [ ](#s "spoiler"), which shows up as .

  • You can also scope your spoilers by putting text between the square brackets, like so: [visible title of VN](#s "hidden spoilery text") which shows up as visible title of VN.

Remember to link to the VNDB page of the visual novel you're discussing.

This is so the indexing bot for the "what are you reading" archive doesn't miss your reference due to a misspelling. Thanks!~

So I just finished my first untranslated VN a few days ago so guess I'm a proper babby JOP now.

Sisters ~Natsu no Saigo no Hi~ Ultra Edition

First of all, huge thanks to u/tyson123g for recommending this VN to me. It's a really short nukige-ish fully animated VN which, unexpectedly, leaves the reader to think about a lot of stuff happening in the VN. Also, it's really easy to read as a first JP VN, so for people who come into this thread looking for some stuff to read as their first I can strongly recommend this gem.

The game baits you into thinking it's a nukige fairly early on. However this is mixed with a somewhat eerie and unsettling atmosphere, and going forward it actually becomes a game with a pretty decent plot.

The writing however is really confusing on purpose, and you need to keep your attention on some little and not so little details to actually reveal that eponimous "secret" in the VN's description.

VERY spoilery discussion screenshots

It was a really good ride, and some of the H-scenes are just pure :yabai:. I'll gladly recommend this VN. 8/10

9 -nine- Ep1

Nothing I can say yet, but so far so good. Fairly easy language-wise for me, so I guess I'll report when I finish the first episode and I'll see if I'm gonna continue or not. Production wise though the VN is really good. Voiced MC is a big plus in my book, and I really enjoy the cast as a whole. Also Palette's artstyle is very appealing for me. Here's hoping plot-wise the VN is also pretty nice.

Reading Waka-sama no Zasuru Sekai, which just came out last Thursday(PST)/Friday(JST). Really fun story centering around ancient Japanese folklore, executed differently from other stories with similar premises. It's already got some pretty good ratings on EGS, so if you can read untranslated VNs, definitely give this one a shot! Also, this may actually be the last VN released in the Heisei Period!

Rance 02 Kai

02 was a very frustrating experience for me, but it was pretty short and is only a stepping stone for later games.

For context 02, or 02 Kai rather, is just a rewritten script for Rance II with updated art from Orion. So it's stuck with the archaic gameplay system that might as well not exist, and the progression from point to point is extremely roundabout. Fetch quests turn into larger fetch quests and only serves to extend your time in this hell. I was really concerned that my ctrl key was going to break. The last chapter consists of buying enough full restores to make the elite four jealous and hoping that your fingers don't become numb. The plot is pretty simple but introduces us to some major characters and lore for later games such as Maria/Shizuka/Milli etc. The character writing is fun throughout (except the final boss lol) so I still found some enjoyment in 02, especially the scenes with Maria.

Time to start 03 I guess...
