In The Night Manager, John le Carré's first post-Cold War novel, an ex-soldier helps British Intelligence penetrate the secret world of ruthless arms dealers.
At the start of it all, Jonathan Pine is merely the night manager at a luxury hotel. But when a single attempt to pass on information to the British authorities - about an international businessman at the hotel with suspicious dealings - backfires terribly, and people close to Pine begin to die, he commits himself to a battle against powerful forces he cannot begin to imagine.
In a chilling tale of corrupt intelligence agencies, billion-dollar price tags and the truth of the brutal arms trade, John le Carré creates a claustrophobic world in which no one can be trusted.

It is a master piece where words cover the inner secrets of 'espiocracy' and the murky ambience that covers it. The carefully chosen narrative leads readers to frequent course corrections, while he ( the reader) all along attempts to unravel the mystery. It is much like someone attempting to solve a jigsaw puzzle for getting to the core. It is the challenge thrown to the reader that makes the book stands on its own as a master piece.

It's a long book. Reads like a screenplay. Like the author had a movie in mind right from the beginning. The story and characters are worth staying with despite the length. The strength of the imagery and language help too. Pine is made out too multitalented. The department vs department thing has been done before by Carre. He could have avoided it and saved many insider pages. Carre is not in the league of Greene or Amis, but tries gamely. All in all, worth the time spent I suppose.

Quintessential Le Carrè, complex plot, incredibly detailed narrative, intricate, fat-paced language that holds the reader’s attention throughout.
The ending is a bit abrupt. One puts the book down with the hope of a sequel. But great thriller all the same.

Having read John le Carre's 'Spy Who Came in from the Cold' and 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy', this book clearly falls short. It may be a good read, but not in the same class as the cold war classics.

The plan to infiltrate the criminal organisation of Richard Roper is elaborate, clever and well executed. But, the mouse turns out to smarter than the cat in this classic spy story. Unexpected, unusual ending.

Read it in advance of watching the TV series. I have read a lot of Le Carre but somehow had missed this one. A good read. I would have preferred a more explicit ending.

Le Carre delivers. If you like his stuff. You will like this one. A move from Cold War settings but similar themes. Ambiguous good vs horrendous evil. Highly recommended.

Contaba con alguna pequeña marquita en portada pero el interior esta perfecto. He empezado a leerlo ya y es una novela muy interesante hasta donde he llegado.

Saw the movie, the read the book

The first time, as far as I remember, that I read a book after seeing the movie, straight after. Funny how you can compare them easily. The addendum of Le Carré is also illuminating.
