Biography

Lady Caroline Russell was born in January 1742-43, the daughter of Lieutenant-General John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford and his wife the Hon. Gertrude Leveson-Gower (Duchess of Bedford).

Marriage

Lady Caroline married George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough, the son of Lieutenant-General Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough and the Hon. Elizabeth Trevor, on 23 Aug 1762 at Bedford House, Bloomsbury, London.

Children

They had 8 children:

  1. Lady Caroline Spencer ( Caroline (Spencer) Ellis (1763-1813) ), who married Henry Agar-Ellis, 2nd Viscount Clifden and had issue, including George Agar-Ellis, 1st Baron Dover.
  2. George (Spencer) Spencer-Churchill (1766-1840), 5th Duke of Marlborough.
  3. Lady Charlotte Spencer (1769–1802), who married the Reverend Edward Nares and had issue.
  4. Lord Henry John Spencer (1770–1795).
  5. Lady Anne (Spencer) Ashley-Cooper (1773-1865), who married Cropley Ashley-Cooper, 6th Earl of Shaftesbury and had issue.
  6. LadyElizabeth Spencer (abt.1772-1812), who married her cousin, John Spencer (a grandson of the 3rd Duke of Marlborough) and had issue.
  7. Lord Francis Almeric Spencer (1779-1845), created Baron Churchill in 1815.
  8. Lady Amelia Sophia (Spencer) Boyce (1785-1829) who married Henry Pytches Boyce.

Life Story

Caroline and her family lived at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire.

Death

Caroline, Duchess of Marlborough died on 26 November 1811 at age 68 at Chapel, Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England and was buried there on 2 December 1811. [1]

If you move the "Duchess of Marlborough" from the nickname to the other name box, it will read, " Lady Caroline Spencer formerly Russell AKA Duchess of Marlborough". It should be in the Suffix box but that box has a limit as to the length you can place in it. "Duchess of Marlborough" is not a nickname, don't you think?
