Shomari Figures, a former deputy chief of staff and counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland, defeated state House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels in a contentious Democratic primary runoff for this newly drawn district. Figures will be a significant favorite to win the general election in November.
Republicans chose attorney Caroleene Dobson, the second-place finisher in last month's primary. Both Dobson and former state Sen. Dick Brewbaker had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for the primary runoff, despite the new district's Democratic lean.
Republican Rep. Barry Moore, a member of the House Freedom Caucus who was drawn out of his seat, pulled off an upset in a rare member-on-member challenge against Rep. Jerry Carl. Moore is expected to cruise to reelection in the fall.
Dual runoffs are coming on April 16: Democrats Shomari Figures and state House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels on the Democratic side, and former state Sen. Dick Brewbaker and attorney Caroleene Dobson for the GOP. Democrats have a real shot at flipping this newly drawn seat, which increases Black voters' influence, come November.
Longtime GOP Rep. Robert Aderholt brushed off a primary challenge from Justin Holcomb, who vowed to serve only two terms in Congress had he won.
