I was disappointed with this record. JY has written such great songs, like Miss America and Snowblind, that I was expecting a record with these types of songs. Alas, that's not the case and I was disappointed.
I was surprised when I heard JY formed JYG, and somewhat eager to get my hands on this CD. I found it very enjoyable, a nice mix of vocal sharing among the lead singers, and while quite different from what I was expecting, I found myself really liking this. Seems to me that JY does his best work when collaborating with others.
I've been a Styx fan for many years, so when the group went on hiatus in the late 80s and early 90s, I purchased many of the solo albums released by Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung. However, this cd by guitarist James Young is one of the best.
This cd has a distinct Styx-like sound to it, and the Styx pattern of strong vocals backed with excellent guitar, drum, and keyboard work is evident on this disc. Although JY only sings lead vocals on a couple of the tracks, his searing guitar is still very much in evidence.
The songs contained on the disc are all great, but "Love (and Love Alone)", "Let's Do It Everywhere", and "Heaven in Your Heart" stand out as the best on the disc. They are loaded with great vocals and insturmentals.
The J.Y. Group played at some local clubs while I was in college, and I never missed an opportunity to see them play live. I highly recommend this cd. You'll be surprised at how good the songs on this disc really are. It had been a while since I last played it, and I was blown away at how good it was after hearing it again. Put the James Young Group in your disc player and hear some truly great, hard-driving rock and roll.
James Young tried a different approach for this album. He formed a five-strong group around him (himself and four others)and performed songs written by a litany of various people. The most interesting thing is Young himself doesn't seem to be taking too much input, he only sings on a couple of tracks and has a hand in the songwriting on only three tracks.
Despite this, the songs tend to gravitate towards JY's rocking sound. The opener is pretty good, but it's followed by a long-drawn out rocker (don't get mad) that doesn't deserve to be seven minutes long. Then there are a bunch of songs that are average JY album filler, like 'Amazing Grace' and 'Lets do it everywhere'. There are a couple of very good tracks that start off acoustic and slowly build up into rockers; 'Hearts not the same' and 'Heaven in your heart' the latter has a nice chorus. That said both the songs are quite similar. Then there's 'Love (and love alone)' which is a lighter song with a nice chorus and was written by Glen Burtnik and Bob Burger. The album closes with the epic 'City of hope' which meanders and doesn't throw up much in the way of hooks.
I think there is enough decent material on this album to make it worth 3 stars. JY fares decently as a solo artist and I would LOVE to see more solo albums from him.

When Styx went hiatus from the post 1984 Caught In The Act to the 1990 Edge Of The Century reunion. The three singing members when on solo careers and this is definetly JY's best. Raised By Wolves is definetly a must have if you're a die hard Styx fan you got to get this.
