The inspiration for the film of the same name starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd, this “very funny, exceptionally vivid first novel” (The New York Times Book Review) from Stephen McCauley is a “joyously comic” (People) story about a pregnant New York City social worker who begins to develop romantic feelings for her gay best friend, much to the dismay of her overbearing boyfriend.

George and Nina seem like the perfect couple. They share a cozy, cluttered Brooklyn apartment, a taste for impromptu tuna casserole dinners, and a devotion to ballroom dancing lessons at Arthur Murray. They love each other. There’s only one hitch: George is gay. And when Nina announces she’s pregnant, things get especially complicated. Howard—Nina’s overbearing boyfriend and the baby’s father—wants marriage. Nina wants independence. George will do anything for a little unqualified affection, but is he ready to become an unwed surrogate dad? A touching and hilarious novel about love, friendship, and the many ways of making a family.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

It's no mistake that Stephen McCauley's The Object of My Affection ends at a carnival, for the book is, shockingly enough, not about ballroom dancing or Jennifer Aniston's hair, but rather a funny, bittersweet rumination on the thrill rides we endure and the trick mirrors through which we peer, all in the name of relationships.

George is a gay kindergarten teacher, holding a torch of the inextinguishable variety for his not-worth-it ex-boyfriend. Nina is a pregnant "almost-psychologist" feminist with a nail-polish obsession and an overbearing boyfriend. The focus of the novel is certainly on the relationship between these two, but McCauley also brings an entire fictional ensemble to life, richly nuanced with quirky humor. After a night utterly devoid of sleep, romance, or even physical comfort on a stranger's futon, George decides to cut his losses and leave in the middle of the night, silently wondering about his generation's aversion to mattresses: "I've never trusted people who feel compelled to replace them with uncomfortable, expensive substitutes." As he leaves, his blind date caps off the evening with some unsolicited dietary advice, advising him that he should really cut down on dairy. "Thanks," George deadpans. "I've been meaning to eliminate it from my diet. This should give me the extra push."

The Object of My Affection gets you to care about this screwed-up lot of characters as they attempt to force the square peg of life-as-it-is-wished into the round hole of life-as-it-is. It offers no pat resolutions but rather an overall sense of hope, made all the more believable by the fact that the author has not frantically tried to tie up every single loose end. Instead, George, Nina, and those who touch them manage to push off from their unreasonably idealistic visions of the future and anchor, albeit tenuously, to the blessings of the present, resolved to remain standing amidst the forces that move them, as McCauley writes, "as inevitable as death and much stronger than love." --Bob Michaels

Review

People Joyously comic...shimmers with hope, humor, and compassion.

The New York Times Book Review Very funny, exceptionally vivid....Surely one of best books about what it is like to be young in these crazy times.

Los Angeles Daily News Charming and affecting...The strong plotting, memorable gallery of characters and wry look at the complicated state of relations between the sexes could beguile any reader from Bensonhurst to Burbank.

McCauley’s insights about relationships and the different ways in which people come together as family feels so authentic. If you like this book read his book “My ex-life”. Read all his books for that matter! They’re all great reads!

My Thoughts: I loved the movie based on Object of My Affection, starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Ruud, among others.

After reading another novel by this author, I was eager to see how this story played out in book format.

Just as in the movie, I enjoyed the settings (Manhattan, Brooklyn) and the issues of two roommates taking on the challenges of single life, especially when one of the characters is having a baby with another man.

The book ended on a different note, and while I liked it, I couldn’t help but wish for the movie ending. 4.5 stars.

I liked the ending, but it took a long time to get there. It took me longer than usual to begin to like the characters. They seemed so false and neurotic that I couldn’t figure out what kind of people they were, but I guess they were figuring that out as the book went along.

Really well written and a great love story. Modern and very current how love presents itself in many ways. McCauley is the author of our times. I also especially liked his next book My Ex-Life.

Enjoyable and real characters with believable emotions. George is a gay man with a good sense of humor about his life.

One of my favorite novels. The movie, of course, didn't begin to do justice to the book--couldn't begin to capture the subtleties of the main characters' relationship, the wonderful way the author captures their characters, etc. It's a beautiful, funny, poignant story.

The 1st book I read by McCauley was My Ex-Life; it was truly wonderful, I could not put it down. Curious about his other books I decided to try Object of my Affection. I am sorry to say I found it uninteresting and uneventful. I was always waiting for something exciting to happen (nothing ever did) and at the end I just wanted it to be over.
My Ex-Life, on the other hand, was amazing and I highly recommend it.

Given it's condition, the mark up was quite high I felt. The condition was fair, but it was quite old and I felt the cost was a little steep. Other than that, it was fine.
