‘Harold & Kumar’ is a series of buddy-stoner movies that transcended their genre and became a pop-culture phenomenon. The movies were extremely popular in the 2000s, mostly due to their raunchy themes and politically charged humor but also due to making fun of some cultural stereotypes. Harold Lee is a Korean American investment banker, and Kumar Patel is an Indian American premed student residing in New Jersey they have one thing in common, and that is an appreciation of weed, and since their wild adventures were told over a series of movies, we’re going to tell you how to watch them in order.

The first ‘Harold & Kumar’ movie was released in 2004, and it wasn’t exactly a box office success, but it did gain a cult following in the stoner circles and later surged in popularity via home video. The reviews were mostly positive, and with the sudden cult status, a single movie eventually turned into a franchise that, as of now, consists out of three movies in total:

All ‘Harold & Kumar’ movies are connected and follow the same characters. The main storylines of the movies are generally separated as each installment follows new adventures, and as such, you can watch the movies as standalone installments as well. However, the best course of action would be to simply watch the movies in their release date order since later installments use references that might be confusing for you if you decide to watch the series out of order.

The chronology of ‘Harold & Kumar’ movies is really straightforward as each installment takes place after the previous one. There are no reboots, parallel universes, or anything like that. 

1. ‘Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle’ (2004)

The first movie introduces us to Harold & Kumar, an investment banker and a medical student who have a tendency to enjoy some recreational drug use. One evening, while getting high, they get a serious case of munchies, and just at that moment, they see a commercial for White Castle Burgers.  

They check the distance to reach the nearest White Castle, and despite it being far, they decide to embark on an adventure, and it turns into a late-night adventure of their lives.

2. ‘Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay’ (2008)

The second movie takes place almost right after the events of the first movie. Harold and Kumar are about to board the flight to Amsterdam when Kumar lights up a bong at the airport, which an elderly woman mistakes for a bomb. Both Harold and Kumar are imprisoned and taken to Guantanamo Bay, and while they do manage to escape from the prison, there is a wild journey in front of them to clear their names, during which they will meet an even greater repertoire of bizarre characters. 

3. ‘A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas’ (2011)

The third ‘Harold & Kumar’ movie takes place seven years after the first two movies and two years after Harold and Kumar last spoke. At some point, Harold married Maria and has a successful career on Wall Street; he also no longer smokes weed. Kumar got kicked out of medical school and still lives in the run-down apartment that he used to share with Harold. Kumar, dealing with a recent breakup and unexpected pregnancy news from his ex-girlfriend, joins Harold for Christmas festivities. The arrival of Maria’s father, who disapproves of Harold, complicates matters, especially when he brings a cherished Christmas tree. Opening the package, Harold and Kumar realize that inside is a giant joint, which Kumar promptly lits up; in his attempt to dispose of the joint, Harold accidentally burns down a special Christmas tree that Maria’s father has given them and now has to embark on an adventure with Kumar to find a replacement.

The first ‘Harold & Kumar’ movie can only be rented or bought on various digital marketplaces such as Apple TV stores and Amazon. The second movie ‘Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay’ can be streamed on Max. The last movie in the franchise can be streamed on both Max and Paramount+. 

Will there be more movies featuring Harold & Kumar?

In 2014, Adult Swim announced the development of ‘Harold and Kumar: The Animated Series,’ confirmed by actors Kal Penn, David Krumholtz, and director Jon Hurwitz. However, the animated series was never produced. In 2016, John Cho revealed that he pitched an idea for a fourth ‘Harold & Kumar’ film, expressing optimism about its potential production. As of November 12, 2021, during an Instagram Q&A, Kal Penn suggested that a fourth film in the series might be in the works, stating, “I believe so.”
