T his score to the Twyla Tharp production effectively closes the chapter on the trilogy of post-modern music begun with Remain In Light and continued on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Unfortunately, it didnt show up on a lot of peoples radar screens because, well, its the score to a modern ballet for crying out loud. And yet it really isnt. What youll find on the soundtrack to The Catherine Wheel is the same mixed media approach of My Life (Eggs in a Briar Patch, The Red House), herky-jerky Heads trips (My Big Hands, Big Blue Plymouth) and ambient pieces (Cloud Chamber, Light Bath). Eno has a hand in it but not a big one; The Catherine Wheel is clearly Byrnes show. As such, it functions as a kind of masters thesis on modernism. Out of the shadow of Eno, Byrne is more interested in the modern condition: man is trapped (His Wife Refused), looking for lost utopias (What A Day That Was), fabricating an illusion of freedom (Big Blue Plymouth). Its heavy stuff underneath, but absurdly amusing on the surface. Byrne finally scratched the artistic itch with this one, returning to Talking Heads and writing pop music for the rest of the 80s. The 1980-1981 period remains something of an agitated anomaly, though I would tell you its the best stuff hes ever done. The CD and cassette versions add another eleven tracks; given the quality of the original ten, Id suggest you spring for the deluxe package (I wish I had). If you enjoyed Light and My Life, you should get around to The Catherine Wheel sooner than later.
