Toronto, April 10, 2022 – The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (the Canadian Academy) announced the winners of the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards over six days during Canadian Screen Week, including the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards show which was broadcast on CBC and CBC Gem on Sunday, April 10. CTV’s Transplant led television honours, winning eight Canadian Screen Awards including: Best Drama Series; Best Lead Actor, Drama Series for Hamza Haq; and Best Lead Actress, Drama Series for Laurence Leboeuf. The fifth and final season of CBC’s Kim’s Convenience took home three Canadian Screen Awards: Paul Sun-Hyung Lee for Best Lead Actor, Comedy; Jean Yoon for Best Lead Actress, Comedy; and Andrew Phung for Best Supporting Actor, Comedy, marking his fifth win in this category. The award for Best Comedy Series, presented by Canada Media Fund, went to CBC’s Sort Of. Film honours were led by Shasha Nakhai and Rich Williamson’s Scarborough, earning a total of eight Canadian Screen Awards including: Best Motion Picture, presented by CBC; Achievement in Direction; and the John Dunning Best First Feature Film Award, which comes with a $25,000 cash prize, courtesy of the John Dunning Foundation. Obsidian Theatre’s 21 Black Futures led the Digital Media category with four wins, including: Best Web Program or Series, Fiction, presented with the participation of the Independent Production Fund; and Best Lead Performance, Web Program or Series for Lovell Adams-Gray. “There is no denying the past couple of years have been filled with challenges. Yet, with those challenges came opportunities to defy the status quo and try new things,” said Beth Janson, CEO, Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. “That is exactly what we strived for with the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards — an opportunity to reinvent the awards show as we know it. With incredible support from the resilient Canadian creative community, we were able to do just that. Congratulations to all who helped put this celebration together, and of course to this year’s talented winners!” “2021 was an exceptional year for film, television, and digital media, proving once again that the toughest of circumstances can pave the way for incredible stories to be told,” said John Young, Chair, Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. “A heartfelt congratulations to all of the winners of this year’s Canadian Screen Awards. Thank you for sharing your craft with the world.” CTV Sci Fi Channel’s Wynonna Earp took home the coveted Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award, which was presented to a television series for the first time this year. Treehouse TV’s Miss Persona won the Shaw Rocket Fund Kids’ Choice Award. The tenth annual Canadian Screen Awards celebrated Canadian content — and those who create it — with ten individual awards shows that honoured the best film, television, and digital media works of the past year. In collaboration with powerhouse creative producers Makers, the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards show on CBC and CBC Gem was a true reinvention of the awards show — a creatively curated, star-powered fan experience that highlighted the notable moments and work that made us laugh, cry, and reflect over the past year. With some of Canada’s brightest stars, including Simu Liu, Tatiana Maslany, and Catherine O’Hara — and milestone moments like the celebration of Dolores Claman’s “The Hockey Theme,” featuring some of hockey’s biggest names — this show will not soon be forgotten. The majority of 2022 Canadian Screen Awards were presented as a nine-part series of genre-based virtual shows, hosted by notable Canadian talents including Brandon Gonez, Supinder Wraich, Mary Berg, and Ennis Esmer. Also honoured were the 2022 Special Awards recipients, a group of eight Canadians who have had a tremendous impact on our media industry. Honourees included Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Bob Cole; Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism recipient Rassi Nashalik; Radius Award (presented by MADE | NOUS) recipient Maitreyi Ramakrishnan; and the inaugural recipients of the Changemaker Award: Kayla Grey, Kathleen Newman-Bremang, and Amanda Parris.
