How to Create a Yahoo Email Alias

Keep your Yahoo ID private by masking it with a different email address

Your main Yahoo Mail account uses your Yahoo ID in your email address (yahooid@yahoo.com). To help protect your Yahoo ID while you're sending and receiving email messages, you can use a Yahoo email alias instead of your main Yahoo email address.

What Is A Yahoo Email Alias?

A Yahoo email alias is simply another Yahoo email address you can use as a disguise for your main Yahoo Mail account that contains your Yahoo ID.

So instead of giving your yahooid@yahoo.com out to receive messages or using it in the From: field when you send messages, you would use your own yahooemailalias@yahoo.com address instead.

Any messages sent to your Yahoo email alias will be automatically received in your main Yahoo Mail account. Likewise, any messages you want to send from your email alias can be done from your main Yahoo Mail account.

How to Create a New Email Alias on Yahoo Mail

You can only create an email alias on Yahoo Mail by accessing it from a web browser (not the Yahoo Mail mobile apps for iOS and Android). Once created via the web, however, you'll be able to receive and view messages sent to the email alias via the app.

  1. Navigate to mail.yahoo.com in a web browser and sign into your account if necessary.

  2. Select Settings in the top right.

  3. Select More Settings at the bottom of the sidebar on the right.

  4. Select Mailboxes in the vertical menu on the left.

  6. Enter the name of your new email alias (without the "@yahoo.com" part) in the field labeled Create a new Yahoo Mail address.

You can only include letters, numbers, underscores and periods in your email address. You're also limited to editing your email alias only two times over the next 12 months.

  7. Select the blue Set Up button.

If your chosen email alias is already taken or unavailable, you won't be able to use it. You can either try a new one or select a suggestion from the list below that Yahoo will create from your original email alias choice.

  8. Once your email alias has been successfully created, you'll be asked to provide the following information:

    • Your name: This will be shown in the emails that you send.
    • A description: A brief description like, "extra account."
    • Reply-to address: Choose whether you want to receive replies from messages sent via the email alias back to the email alias or to your main Yahoo email address.

  9. Select the blue Finish button.

You can only have one email alias that can both send and receive messages. If you ever want to delete your email alias, simply select it under Mailboxes in your settings and then select the red Remove alias button.

How to Send Emails from Your Yahoo Email Alias

Unlike some other email platforms, Yahoo Mail allows you to both send and receive email messages from your email alias. Email aliases typically act as forwarding email addresses only, meaning that they're usually used just for receiving email.

You can send email message using your email alias both from Yahoo Mail on the web and the Yahoo Mail mobile app for iOS and Android.

  1. At Yahoo Mail on the web, select the Compose button in the top left to create a new email message.

On the Yahoo Mail app, tap the colored pencil icon in the bottom right.

  2. You should see a dropdown arrow icon at the end of your default email address in the From: field. Tap it to see all the email addresses you have and select your email alias to make it your sending email address.

  3. Continue drafting your email as you would normally and send it when you're done. The recipient(s) will see your email alias listed as the sender email address.

Want to make your email alias your default sending address so you don't have to manually run through the above steps every time? On the web, select Settings > ... More Settings > Mailboxes > Writing email and under Default sending address, select the dropdown arrow to make your email alias your new default.

Create Additional Yahoo Email Aliases for Other Purposes

Yahoo Mail only allows you to have one main email alias that you can both send and receive messages from, but there are two other types of email aliases you can create for specific types of email activities.

Send-Only Email Addresses

Located under the main Email alias label in the Mailboxes section of your settings, you can create up to 10 additional email addresses that you can use to send messages from.

Just select Add under Send-only email addresses to add an email address. When composing or replying to a new message, simply select the dropdown arrow in the From: field to select your send-only email alias.

Disposable Email Addresses

You'll find Disposable email addresses under Send-only email addresses in the Mailboxes section of your settings. A disposable email address is supposed to be used for receiving third-party newsletters and helps you maintain control over privacy and spam.

You can create up to 500 disposable email addresses through various services, which will be delivered to your inbox — unless you set up filters to be delivered to other folders. When you want to stop receiving messages from a disposable email address, you can easily delete it.
