Having heard some of Chris Whitley's more straight-up blues rock before, the style of Din of Ecstasy definitely surprised me, since it definitely (and likely intentionally) evokes Soundgarden at times. Overall, Whitley did an admirable job of fusing his Jimi Hendrix/Robin Troweresque style with the grunge of the time, and, while some may therefore view the album as a dated period piece, I found most of the songs and playing to be sufficiently interesting and moving to justify repeat listens.

So sorry Whitley didn't call you to ask what he should have recorded that would have made you happy, hatchetman.

I guess we'll just have to live with the creative genius that kept us guessing and wowed us everytime rolled tape or strapped on his National at a club.

Din of Ecstasy is straightforward, aggressive, haunting, thoughtful ... everything that encompasses whitley. Hatchetman apparently never heard whitley do "Narcotic Prayer," "New Machine," or "God Thing" stripped down in their raw, basic form.

Enjoy your John Mayer crap, dude.

This was an incredibly risky effort that ended up as a mixed bag.

There is some seriously tasty guitar work to admire on this album. There is also a healthy dose of droning headache music as well.

I admire Chris for having the balls to throw this out there (or maybe he was to high to know better).

If your in the right mood and like some of Hendrix's or Zeppelin's trippier stuff - you might enjoy this.

A HUGE letdown after the PHENOMENAL acoustic blues debut "Living With The Law". Screeching / distorted guitars ... unintelligible lyrics and for the most part very shitty and poorly written songs. This isn't your classic example of the sophomore jinx album but a total abandonment of what he obviously does best. Saw him live on this tour and walked out of the club in total shock. Fortunately after this piece of shit CW either got it out of his system or learned his lesson and returned back to true form.
