Although he is now known for his film roles as Doctor Strange or the protagonist of The Power of the Dog, Benedict Cumberbatch became popular thanks to Sherlock, a BBC series where he played the famous detective from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Now, he returns to television with a new project from the creator of Chernobyl.

Netflix has just released the trailer for Eric, a six-episode miniseries that will be available on the platform on May 30th. The show has been created by the creative minds behind Chernobyl (HBO Max), so expectations couldn’t be higher. The trailer, without a doubt, promises a binge-worthy series:

An unexpected series that could become the best of Netflix

Eric is set in 1980s New York to bring us the story of Vincent, a prominent puppeteer and creator of a popular children’s series. The plot focuses on the distressing search for his nine-year-old son, Edgar, whose mysterious disappearance plunges Vincent into a whirlwind of guilt and despair. To find his son, Vincent clings to Edgar’s drawings and creates a puppet of a blue monster named Eric, hoping to bring it to television and recover his son.

The series, directed by Lucy Forbes and written by Abi Morgan, also features Gaby Hoffmann as Vincent’s wife, McKinley Belcher III as Inspector Michael Ledroit, and Ivan Morris Howe as young Edgar. In addition to exploring the relationship between Vincent and his creation, the series addresses relevant issues of the time such as the AIDS crisis, homophobia, and institutionalized racism.
