May 10, 2013 8.5/10 Put in the work, however, and Heart of Darkness will reward you for the effort. It's still huge and uncompromising, but there's no better way to experience Victoria II. The improved combat and naval mechanics were oft-requested, and Paradox followed through, while the new features make the studio's vision of Victorian war, politics, and economics all the more believable and grand.

April 19, 2013 8.5/10 Paradox Interactive seems to have established a pattern with its main grand-strategy titles: launch a new engine, update all the core titles to it, then slowly add expansions that take into account community requests and increase the depth of the experience. Heart of Darkness is a good example of how this process can increase the enjoyment of the core game, Victoria II in this case, and how seamlessly the integration of new content can be.

June 11, 2013 8.5/10 “Victoria II: Heart of Darkness” takes a rough and incomplete game and and polishes some existing facets while adding a couple of new ones. The biggest additions revolve around colonial adventures. Countries around the “edge” of Europe will reap the biggest benefits from these changes, as many new options will present themselves. While not as fun as having the Mayans invade Europe, the features in this expansion definitely make the original a better game.
