There’s some promising aspects to this record and this band in general, but I can’t help but think it sounds more like a proof of concept that isn’t entirely there instead of a full blown, finished record. For every catchy chorus there’s an off-putting and elementary lyric that kind of ruins it, for every solid riff there’s a lackluster little production effect or synth line that does all but compliment the song, and for every great buildup there’s a sour transition that brings it right back to where it started with no growth. I like tracks like “A Kiss From the Devil” for what they are, fuzzed out little Garage Rock tracks with just as much No Doubt influence as there is Jack White influence. This album is at its best when it’s embracing it’s most distorted and straightforward self. Where it needs the most work is where it tries to branch out into, well just about anything else. They flip back and forth between sounding like they’re trying way too hard and not trying hard enough, and it just makes the thing feel wobbly and inconsistent. I think this album would have sounded a lot better if they had totally embraced the grittier, darker side of they’re sound. There’s quite a bit of promise in the thumping basslines, Josh Homme-esque vocal hooks, and lo-fi guitars when they’re all at their punchiest, so I hope these girls can produce some better written material on their next outing. It’s really hard to say much more about this album because it’s one of those releases that’s just kind of there, but I guess if you like really fuzzy guitars with a little bit of riot girl spirit there might be something for you here. In Plain Sight has some alright ideas but it just could have been so much more interesting if they focused on the more raw, emotional and aggressive side of their sound instead of meandering around with the Indie Pop vibes that make the record feel half-baked. - 4.5/10 (Best Songs - A Kiss From the Devil, Take the Wheel, Glimmer)
