Amazon has put in development hourlong drama series Girl Waits With Gun, based on Amy Stewart’s bestselling book, from writers Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan (Veep). The project, which has a pilot option, hails from Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman’s Brownstone Productions, Warner Bros. TV and Amazon Studios.
Penned by Crittenden and Allan, Girl Waits With Gun is inspired by the true story of Constance Kopp who, years before women had the right to vote, own property or even wear pants, became the first female sheriff in the United States in 1914.
Crittenden and Allan executive produce with Banks and Handelman for Brownstone in association with Warner Bros. TV and Amazon Studios.
Girl Waits With Gun, published by Houghton Mifflin, is the first book in Stewart’s Kopp Sisters novels. It was followed by Lady Cop Makes Trouble and Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions. The fourth book in the series, Miss Kopp Just Won’t Quit, is set to launch in September.
The title, Girl Waits With Gun, comes from a headline of a 1915 news article about the Kopp sisters — Constance, Norma, and Fleurette — which Stewart used in her research for the books.
Crittenden, who had worked on Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond and The New Adventure of Old Christine, teamed with former Scrubs writer-producer Allan to write a feature comedy script, Twenty Times a Lady, based on the book by Karyn Bosnak. It made the 2008 Black List and was made into the 2011 film What’s Your Number?, directed by Mark Mylod and starring Anna Faris, Chris Evans, Zachary Quinto and Joel McHale.
Crittenden and Allan have since been developing together and most recently worked as writers/co-executive producers on Veep.
Pitch Perfect producer Brownstone also has Charlie’s Angels set up at Sony, which Banks will direct, and White Girl Problems at Lionsgate, which will star Patti Cake$‘s Danielle Macdonald.
Stewart is repped by Gersh and Tessler Literary Agency. Crittenden, Allan, Banks and Handelman are all repped by UTA. Banks also is repped by Untitled Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.
