Robin Cook was a pioneer, and remains a major figure, in the medical thriller sub-genre. In THE HADES PROJECT, Robert Ludlum has written a tale very reminiscent of Cook. Cook would have provided a little more clinical detail, but this is still very similar to much of his work. In fact, it's better than a lot of Cook's recent stuff.
The similarity to Cook aside, though, this isn't one of Ludlum's best. That shouldn't be too surprising because Ludlum is listed as only a co-author along with Gayle Lynds. I'm not personally familiar with Lynds' work, but THE HADES PROJECT lacks Ludlum's usual intensity and sophistication. I have no idea how much input Ludlum had in it's writing, but it isn't, in my opinion, up to the standard generally set in his vintage works (THE OSTERMAN WEEKEND, THE RHINEMAN EXCHANGE, THE HOLCROFT COVENANT, THE GEMINI CONTENDERS, etc.). Further, the main character, Lt. Colonel Jonathan Smith, seems a bit of a super-hero caricature. Moreover, he swings from mourning the death of his fiancee one moment to participating in her autopsy the next. That strikes me as a bit more intimate than even a certified pathologist might care to get. Smith, although he is a medical doctor and researcher, isn't a pathologist. Nor is he the only character that's a little over the top. The "bad guys" are wooden and almost too evil to be believed. Only the aging CEO has any misgivings at all about what is going on.
More interesting are Smith's friends Marty Zellerbach and Peter Howell. Both are quirky in a likeable way and the scenes in Marty's house are among this book's highlights. The scenes in Saddam's Iraqi police state are also interesting and probably quite realistic.
While this isn't Ludlum at his best, it still isn't bad. There's plenty of action, some of the characters are very engaging, and the story fast-paced enough to keep you turning the pages. The ending is somewhat quick and it all shakes out a bit too easily, but most of the ride is sufficiently bumpy to be fun and entertaining. It may not be five stars, but it's better than average.

First, I should explain that I have read the book twice and seen the movie twice. Second, I am a big fan of Robert Ludlum's work. This is one of Ludlum's best efforts and I highly recommend either/both the book and the movie.

The story opens with the start of a plague. First a couple of soldiers die, then other people. Clearly easy to spread this disease and clearly it is deadly. No cure. Early the story takes on a mid-east terrorist theme and we begin to learn the disease is being spread by the terrorists. As the team at "Covert One" (a secret US government intelligence agency) ramps-up, we learn that the terrorists have a method of deployment of this airborne virus that will be very effective. The story mostly focuses on where did the original virus come from and who is causing it to be spread. There are some plot twists slowing down the investigation (like murder of some key people). While the story seems to be exclusively a bio-terrorist plot, there is a big plot twist where the terrorists are simply the agent of the people who are really behind the plot.

A well told story with building suspense. Alot of reality in the story which is chilling to imagine this could really happen (i.e. it ain't sci-fi; it could happen). In the real world, we have seen SARS, Bird Flu and recently H1N1 Flu effecting the population; what if the disease is more deadly than these? What if it spread widely? Yes, this is an exciting, suspenseful story. This is an exciting race against time to save the world! I highly recommend it!

Definitely a good read. Full of lots of suspense, twists and turns. Sets up a whole series of books to come.

I unfortunately did not read the Covert One Books in order, not that that is necessary but all the things referenced in the later books are explained here. Not as fast paced and a little obvious in spots, it was fun to read the beginnings of the characters I've come to know. The Freveletti Covert One Books are my favorites.

I have read so many of Ludlum’s books & loved them. After starting this one on my Kindle, I had to click back to the cover because I thought it was written by a woman. Ludlum would never describe Jon Smith, the main character, as having “broad shoulders and a trim waist”. I really wanted to give this 2 stars, but I am in a generous mood today

I have read this book so many times. I really enjoy so many aspects of it. I like Robert Ludlum books, but I also enjoy Gayle Linds as well. This is probably my favorite of the covert one series. I highly recommend this book.
