Pure Gershwin was Michael Feinstein's first album, and it remains one of his best. It may not have the production values of his later Gershwin tributes, Nice Work if You Can Get It (1996) and Michael & George (1998), but it simply and directly presents Feinstein in his piano-bar days, singing to his own tasteful accompaniments with occasional contributions from bass and drums and a second piano. Establishing the patterns for his later albums, he sings unjustly neglected verses to familiar songs, uncovers some never-before-recorded gems ("The World Is Mine," "What Causes That"), and provides song-by-song notes. Of course Gershwin is an icon; that's long settled. Personally, I think that Michael Feinstein is due to be one in his own right. His treatment of these classics is perfect and I think it's of great benefit that he uses only his piano to accompany these great tunes. I somehow can see and hear Gershwin himself playing and singing for a few friends. Very intimate. So if you want big and glitzy this ain't it, but if you like a calming, enjoyable music experience this does the job.

Really enjoyed this recording of Feinstein's interpretation of many of Gershwin's well known and some lesser known standards. No one wrote songs like the Gershwins and Feinstein seems to feel the heart and soul of their music. I especially like that he sings the "lead-ins" or introductions to these songs and not just the verses and choruses we are most familiar with. Definitely recommend this one.

This is my favorite Feinstein recording, but all I had was a cassette tape. As the steward for the Gershwin legacy and student of Ira Gershwin, this is the best interpretation of classic Gershwin in my opinion. The CD arrived much earlier than I expected too as well, and the price was great!

Feinstein is a true lover of Gershwin, and an expert. He went to Hollywood as a young guy from Columbus, OH, and
was soon introduced to Ira Gershwin, George's brother. This happened in the 1960's - '70's, and Ira became a
mentor to Feinstein, and encouraged his playing and arranging. Feinstein is a piano stylist, and heads a 5-person group for small concerts. And today, Feinstein is a foremost pop performer of many genres of jazz and pop, and in particular, of George Gershwin's songs from his many musicals.
This collection is excellent, creative arrangements of much of the Gershwin repertoire.

I have heard Michael Feinstein on other recordings and always enjoyed him. However, this recording is apparently very poor--the microphone is overdriven, making his voice harsh and high notes especially unclear. Perhaps his youth at the time might account for some but certainly not all.

It is true that his singing is great, his accompaniment sparkling, and his interpretation is masterful. Despite that, I feel the greatest gift he delivers on this CD is to get out of the way of the music and let Gershwin playfulness shine through. There are not many times I have heard anyone do this; this is my desert island CD.
