“Godzilla”: what is the order to watch the films?

The film “Godzilla II: King of the Monsters” will be displayed on “Major Sunday”, from TV Globo, at 11pm this Sunday (27) . Launched in 2019 the film features the titan clashing with Mothra, Rodan and his greatest enemy, King Ghidorah, the three-headed monster.

The fictional monster was portrayed in theaters over 70 years. The first film, “Godzilla”, 1954, was responsible for presenting the gigantic 50-meter-tall mutant reptile to the public. Even without much of the technology that is presented to the character nowadays at the time, managed to convey the message of destroying everything wherever he went.

Throughout the films, Godzilla was also marked by the clash with the giant Kong (also owner of a large film franchise). The conflict between the two was first presented in “King Kong vs. Godzilla” in 1962.

In 2024, the latest monster film was released. “Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire” brought the union of giants who had to face a colossal threat hidden in the depths of the planet, challenging their own existence and the survival of the human race.

Over the decades, Godzilla has had more than 30 films in his universe. Cinematic features are organized into four “eras”: Shōwa era, Heisei era, Millennium era and Reiwa era. It is worth noting that they only include films produced by the Japanese studio Toho.

Regarding the chronological order of productions, films can be followed in three different ways, taking into account the studios through which they were released.

Firstly, in a traditional way, watching the first feature film released – the one from 1954 – until the last one made by the Japanese studio, released in 2023.

In 1998, the feature film “Godzilla” was produced by a different studio, TriStar Pictures, which continued the story in an animated series of the same name from 1998 to 2000.

In 2014, Legendary Pictures rebooted the creature's origins, as well as the “Monsterverse” with the current “Godzilla vs. Kong.” All following films can be followed in release order.
