      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Chair is too short to achieve all of its ambitions, but spot-on observations about academia and a sturdy ensemble led by an empathetic -- and hilarious -- performance from Sandra Oh ensure it's never less than watchable.

Rebecca Harrison Sight & Sound The Chair is a heartfelt series, entertaining and insightful about the challenges facing academics as they fight to save their departments, their subjects, and themselves. Nov 2, 2021 Full Review Thomas Mitchell Sydney Morning Herald Oh's comedic chops ensure Ji-Yoon's bravado is believable, and as the problems pile up, the funnier Ji-Yoon becomes. In a year full of strong female roles on screen, Oh has eclipsed them all. Sep 3, 2021 Full Review Lidija Haas The New Republic [The Chair] feels like a real attempt to grapple with the problems of contemporary academia, and the humanities in particular, by someone who has felt invested in them. Sep 3, 2021 Full Review Alexandra MacAaron Women's Voices for Change The Chair is often funny, but it’s several steps above a typical sit-com. Oh manages to embody Ji-Yoon with exactly the right mashup of frustration and optimism, hope and despair. And, despite it all, she’s disarmingly funny. Rated: 8.5/10 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Cris Kennedy The Canberra Times (Australia) Peet and her team have developed a role worthy of Sandra Oh's brilliance. Her character is warm and human and Oh gets to be purely funny. It is a joy to watch and joy has been pretty thin on the ground lately. Rated: 5/5 Aug 15, 2022 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies The Chair makes for a quick binge with a total run time of three hours and a wonderful leading performance from actress Sandra Oh. Tania Lizzet M I really enjoy it, the humor behind very serios and actual topics Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/23 Full Review Gareth v A show that focuses on the politics of an English department going through change, and while it is funny and rather witty at times, it does fade to quite an anti-climatic finish. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/23 Full Review Rotten T It was fun to watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/03/23 Full Review Samantha C It's very tricky to bring up important subject matters with enough levity that it's easily digestible, without minimising the issues. The Chair does this wonderfully. Casting did a phenomenal job, the chemistry between the lead cast is so well executed. There's a Perfect balance of sincere performances and connections, layered with curve ball laugh out loud moments to keep things light. 'Dramedy' is balancing act that's much easier to get it wrong than right. The Chair got it right. Such a beautiful job blending the genres. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Terry C Fun to watch, great cast, and writers that avoid cliches and "woke" nonsense. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/26/22 Full Review Audience Member Out of touch with the realities of being a university student nowadays: for context, I'm talking as a student whose university just faced a sexual assault scandal last fall and saw a tenured education professor get fired without explanation (although many proposed his outspokenness on racism as a reason), after which students protested against victim silencing, lack of action and attempting to save face without real transparency. While the Chair explores many contemporary crucial issues in academia, it falls incredibly short of fully representing any of them: the script was written by a playwright and it shows as the entire season feels like it would have been better represented on stage. The whole Nazi arc was a waste of screen time that depicts students as vengeful idiotic kids, which took away from Joan's, Ji-Yoon's and Yaz's more relevant arcs. I understand the satirical attempt, but I just couldn't care about Bill's stupid decisions and he would have been better left to grieve his wife in a corner. Focusing on the daily challenges of the first woman of colour elected as chair of an aging department would have been more worthwhile and could then justify a second season. So, overall, it had a great cast, delivering amazing performances, and the script had some great lines (especially for Ju-Ju), but the entire plot felt irrelevant while it touched just enough interesting points to leave me desiring more. The ending was perfectly suited as it suggested an upbeat sentiment to a conclusion that resolved nothing. I expected more. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
