Product description

Available at last, this 2 CD set is an extended version of the much-praised ten inch LP of the same title, released by Rollercoaster last year. These recordings are previously unissued on CD. Broadcast on the Light Programme s Saturday Club in the 50s and 60s, we are fortunate that these masters of Cliff as a primal rocker have survived, enabling us to hear the early days of a kid with a very big future. Two CDs and a 44-page booklet are included. Rock n Roll has become a generic term these days ... it is even used in the USA to describe current recordings by artists that make genuine Rock n Roll fans cringe. Real Rock n Roll comes from the 50s and early 60s, and no matter how much they are imitated by tribute bands and the like, the originals remain the best. Cliff Richard soon hung up his Rock n Roll shoes (despite what he says on the last track of CD2 in this collection) as he became an all-round entertainer . But before Cliff slipped into a smart suit and tie and clipped his hair, there was a brief period when TV s 'Oh Boy' and radio s 'Saturday Club' featured just enough wild rockers to keep us watching and listening to them ... after all, those shows were all there was. Cliff and the Drifters were stars of both programmes and, thanks to their almost instant baptism via live shows in theatres following the chart success of Move It , they were soon belting out quality Rock n Roll on the airwaves. Many of the recordings seem superior to the released records for energy and sheer enthusiasm. Cliff was lucky to have a great band from the start of his professional career ... a driving rhythm section that soon became stars in their own right. A detailed booklet with notes by respected journalist and historian Rob Finnis tells the story of Cliff s Rock n Roll years and is illustrated with rare photographs and memorabilia from the era. For historic reasons we have created two CDs containing tracks from 'Saturday Club': CD 1 features musical content from high-quality recordings plus some tracks of historical interest that were taped off-air (and are therefore of a lesser quality); these have been gathered at the end of CD1 and do not appear on CD 2. On CD 2 we have included the music together with the introductions and interviews just as they were heard in the original broadcasts. Words alone cannot describe the music that captivated many teenagers in the 1950s and turned them into fans for the rest of their lives, but Cliff came pretty close when he sang, Let me tell you baby, it s called Rock n Roll . For more proof, listen to this album.

You had to be there - back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, pop music was hard to find. If it wasn't Radio Luxembourg (crackling, fading, over-run by other foreign stations) then it was the very few programmes the Beeb condescended to give us. They weren't into this rock'n'roll muck which clearly wouldn't catch on, so all we really had was "Saturday Club"

There is no point in my commenting on the sheer brilliance of these recordings - everyone else (almost) has already said what needed to be said about Britain's greatest group (oh yes they b****y well were!) and this superb collection of their broadcast work, but for me, to my own surprise, the highlight was the second CD with Cliff chatting to Brian Matthew and reading out dedications from listeners. I swear by anything you like that I actually remembered a couple of these clips from way back and I find it hard to describe the lump it brought to my throat and the tears to my eyes.

For some of us, this was where the soundtrack to our lives began. A thousand thanks to Rollercoaster for finding, re-mastering and publishing this. Those really were the days, although maybe we didn't realise it at the time. We do now!

Typical of British parsimony, the first LP records were introduced as 10" discs - first came Johnny Ray, then Cliff, then Billy Fury for the rockers. Even Elvis released a 10" film soundtrack (I'm not sure whether this was also available in this format across the pond. I think it was Pye Golden Guinea that first popularized the 2" LP size we are more used to. These early English 10"-ers are now quite collectable and they certainly are seminal works of the artistes concerned - Cliff's rock manifesto at the time he was singing for Jack Goode on 'Oh Boy!' that he later ditched for a more family-friendly film-score image and Ron's (sorry - Billy's) self-penned song cycle that set the standard for the British rock explosion and inspired John Lennon to form a four-piece guitar/guitar/electyric bass/drums band. Don't bother trying tp play this on a Clearaudio Statement - despite its astronomic price with tahgeltial parallel tracking it's for 12" discs only.

If you are old enough to remember the beginnings of Cliff and The Shadows remarkable careers you wil love this CD which basically transforms you back in time to the late fifties,. this is raw British rock'n'roll without all the gloss that came later and it takes you back to when life in England was much simpler, very enjoyable CD and a must for all Cliff fans who remember when he was a teen idol.
CD1 has all the songs without the studio announcements in between the songs and CD 2 has all the same songs again but with studio announcements in between the songs and five extra bonus songs recorded off air in lesser quality, the CD also comes with a very informative booklet full of early facts from those early time. Buy it today as I feel this will be in limited supply.

I've been waiting for this release since I saw the vinyl, and I must say it has been worth waiting.
I love those rock'roll days and here you get the real thing. the sound quality is better than expected.
The first 25 numbers on cd1 have been remastered perfect, the last 9, well take them as a bonus, the quality is ok.
Cd 2 here you get the hole shows. The quality is not as cd1 but you get the feeling of listening to a live show
anno 59 with Cliff & the shads 'A blast from the past'.
If you loved the rockin' Cliff don't wait get it, tomorrow it may be gone.

Raw pure rock n roll recorded on the radio light programme on 1500 metres long wave the forerunner to what is now Radio 2 an absolute gem at a time when there was not much if any air play for teenage music.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS C.D IT REFLECTS CLIFF AT HIS ROCKIN' BEST.IT WASN,T UNTILL 1961 BEFORE HE STARTED TO HAVE AN IMPACT IN AUSTRALIA SO WE DIDN'T GET TO SEE OR HEAR HIS EARLY ROCK & ROLL STUFF AND THIS HAS LET US KNOW THAT HE WAS (AND IS) ONE OF THE GREATS.

I didn't know anything about those BBC-Recordings, the album wasn't released here in Germany.
But someone mentioned it in the Shadows-Forum, that's why I ordered it.
I already knew most of the songs, but not in these versions.

I was a little bit disappointed regarding "Apache", it sounds quite different and doesn't have the magic of the original single.

The first cd has excerpts from Saturday Club which Cliff introducing each record and having a chat to Brian Matthews. This brings back lots of memories as Saturday Club was a religion for me every week. The second cd has Cliff singing all the rock and roll numbers which were popular in the 50's and 60's, just guitars, drums and a mike, no sound effects just raw rock as it used to be.

These are songs recorded during the BBC sessions for Saturday Club with Brian Matthew, much the same as the old 'Beatles At The Beeb' radio show broadcast by the BBC in the 1980s. For some reason they didn't attempt anything similar with Cliff and the Shadows, and the recordings languished in the vaults until now....that is some did. Others were junked (probably recorded over) and lost forever, while a few have been saved by the good fortune of fans having made off-air recordings. The recording quality is so good that I couldn't tell which were which recordings on my first listen so I think a good job has been made of the mastering.

The album is presented as two discs, the first being just songs, and the second having excerpts from the radio shows themselves.

What must be borne in mind is that these tracks were recorded between 1958 and 1960. On the earliest recordings, Cliff Richard is just eighteen years old and Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch of the Shadows were just sixteen years old! And yet they are playing authentic, technically good rock and roll. Although you can tell that their talents are still emerging at this point, the group was remarkably technically accomplished. Cliff's voice is by no means as honed as it would later be, but it makes up for that in the raw enthusiasm.

Many of the tracks here have been recorded by the group for release on albums. but these are more immediate, and thankfully, the Norrie Paramor strings are nowhere to be seen! One of my favorite tracks is the cover of Chuck Willis's "Hang Up My Rock 'N' Roll Shoes" which could easily have been a number one single had Cliff and the boys released it in 1960.

This is highly recommended for Cliff fans, Shadows fans, and anyone who likes Rock 'N' Roll at its raunchiest.

I'm not a huge Cliff Richard's fan as he always seemed to be just a little bit too cocky, but I'm a solid one,no less because of his great band,The Shadows. And he could really sing, having a great voice and, very often, showing an understanding for his material as deep as Elvis did. These 2 cds give us all that was great about him and The Shadows, the kicker being it's LIVE and from BACK IN THE DAY when it was all starting for him and his group. You feel the hunger in the music, and the passion that was brought to it.Some may complain about multiple versions of the same songs, but that's nit-picking to me,as this is an historical document.Along with the EMI box set put out many years ago,Cliff and his contribution is represented right. The booklet is BEAUTIFUL,as is the entire package. This is a must.

All of the songs on this CD are alternate studio versions of Cliff's very early songs. Most Cliff fans love hearing alternate versions, especially when they didn't know they even existed. I really love this CD. And it's good to listen to when you're toolin' down the highway.
