Product description
Available at last, this 2 CD set is an extended version of the much-praised ten inch LP of the same title, released by Rollercoaster last year. These recordings are previously unissued on CD. Broadcast on the Light Programme s Saturday Club in the 50s and 60s, we are fortunate that these masters of Cliff as a primal rocker have survived, enabling us to hear the early days of a kid with a very big future. Two CDs and a 44-page booklet are included. Rock n Roll has become a generic term these days ... it is even used in the USA to describe current recordings by artists that make genuine Rock n Roll fans cringe. Real Rock n Roll comes from the 50s and early 60s, and no matter how much they are imitated by tribute bands and the like, the originals remain the best. Cliff Richard soon hung up his Rock n Roll shoes (despite what he says on the last track of CD2 in this collection) as he became an all-round entertainer . But before Cliff slipped into a smart suit and tie and clipped his hair, there was a brief period when TV s 'Oh Boy' and radio s 'Saturday Club' featured just enough wild rockers to keep us watching and listening to them ... after all, those shows were all there was. Cliff and the Drifters were stars of both programmes and, thanks to their almost instant baptism via live shows in theatres following the chart success of Move It , they were soon belting out quality Rock n Roll on the airwaves. Many of the recordings seem superior to the released records for energy and sheer enthusiasm. Cliff was lucky to have a great band from the start of his professional career ... a driving rhythm section that soon became stars in their own right. A detailed booklet with notes by respected journalist and historian Rob Finnis tells the story of Cliff s Rock n Roll years and is illustrated with rare photographs and memorabilia from the era. For historic reasons we have created two CDs containing tracks from 'Saturday Club': CD 1 features musical content from high-quality recordings plus some tracks of historical interest that were taped off-air (and are therefore of a lesser quality); these have been gathered at the end of CD1 and do not appear on CD 2. On CD 2 we have included the music together with the introductions and interviews just as they were heard in the original broadcasts. Words alone cannot describe the music that captivated many teenagers in the 1950s and turned them into fans for the rest of their lives, but Cliff came pretty close when he sang, Let me tell you baby, it s called Rock n Roll . For more proof, listen to this album.

There is no point in my commenting on the sheer brilliance of these recordings - everyone else (almost) has already said what needed to be said about Britain's greatest group (oh yes they b****y well were!) and this superb collection of their broadcast work, but for me, to my own surprise, the highlight was the second CD with Cliff chatting to Brian Matthew and reading out dedications from listeners. I swear by anything you like that I actually remembered a couple of these clips from way back and I find it hard to describe the lump it brought to my throat and the tears to my eyes.
For some of us, this was where the soundtrack to our lives began. A thousand thanks to Rollercoaster for finding, re-mastering and publishing this. Those really were the days, although maybe we didn't realise it at the time. We do now!
CD1 has all the songs without the studio announcements in between the songs and CD 2 has all the same songs again but with studio announcements in between the songs and five extra bonus songs recorded off air in lesser quality, the CD also comes with a very informative booklet full of early facts from those early time. Buy it today as I feel this will be in limited supply.
I love those rock'roll days and here you get the real thing. the sound quality is better than expected.
The first 25 numbers on cd1 have been remastered perfect, the last 9, well take them as a bonus, the quality is ok.
Cd 2 here you get the hole shows. The quality is not as cd1 but you get the feeling of listening to a live show
anno 59 with Cliff & the shads 'A blast from the past'.
If you loved the rockin' Cliff don't wait get it, tomorrow it may be gone.
But someone mentioned it in the Shadows-Forum, that's why I ordered it.
I already knew most of the songs, but not in these versions.
I was a little bit disappointed regarding "Apache", it sounds quite different and doesn't have the magic of the original single.

The album is presented as two discs, the first being just songs, and the second having excerpts from the radio shows themselves.
What must be borne in mind is that these tracks were recorded between 1958 and 1960. On the earliest recordings, Cliff Richard is just eighteen years old and Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch of the Shadows were just sixteen years old! And yet they are playing authentic, technically good rock and roll. Although you can tell that their talents are still emerging at this point, the group was remarkably technically accomplished. Cliff's voice is by no means as honed as it would later be, but it makes up for that in the raw enthusiasm.
Many of the tracks here have been recorded by the group for release on albums. but these are more immediate, and thankfully, the Norrie Paramor strings are nowhere to be seen! One of my favorite tracks is the cover of Chuck Willis's "Hang Up My Rock 'N' Roll Shoes" which could easily have been a number one single had Cliff and the boys released it in 1960.
This is highly recommended for Cliff fans, Shadows fans, and anyone who likes Rock 'N' Roll at its raunchiest.
