      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Girls of the Sun has the best of intentions, but this worthy - and thoroughly timely - story is fatally undermined by its clumsily overbearing execution.

Nell Minow AWFJ.org The commitment and understanding of the women who band together in the midst of tragedy and chaos is touchingly portrayed in a rare film that shows the experience of women in armed conflict. Oct 13, 2021 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This script is terrible, but the story and the filmmaking is very good. Sep 27, 2019 Full Review G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle "Girls of the Sun" has an air of authenticity and grit that's convincing, and Farahani, an Iranian-born actress, makes us care. Rated: 3/4 Apr 17, 2019 Full Review Jennifer Merin AWFJ.org French director Eva Husson's second feature is a deeply affecting narrative that centers around a battalion of Kurdish women warriors who've survived brutal abuse from the extremest men... Oct 13, 2021 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson AWFJ.org I'm not sure it entirely works as a film, but do we need a portrait of modern women soldiers fighting for their nation and their families? Yes, we do. Oct 13, 2021 Full Review Betsy Bozdech AWFJ.org Girls of the Sun may be a war movie, but its empathy and compassion are what win the day. Oct 13, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A powerful, gut wrenching movie with stunning cinematography and score. Th fact that it is based on actual events that were well covered by the press makes it even more important to watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Don't know what the critics smoked before watching this film... A truely horrific story told in a way that was easier to swallow. It didn't shy away from telling the horrors but also left some things to the imagination. We were unable to look away & I sat at the edge of my seat throughout the film. Fantastic movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member I have never understood the critics. This was an engaging must see movie, that enables a glimpse into the nightmare that ISIS visited on ordinary people, and the courage of those that fought back, and won. Wonderful atmospheric camera work, and a plot line that fits to the chaos of the times. If you don't believe it, ask someone who was there. They are heroes. Thank you for making this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Great movie, I've watched it four times now Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This was one of the best movies I have ever seen. The critics are wrong, this is an advancement in both story telling and cinematography. But the real advance is in showing what a female cast can do in order to tell the truth about the ugliness of war. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Great film. Really intelligent portrayal of the human rights abuses committed by ISIS against the Yezidi people, and women more specifically. Also an interesting view of war through women's eyes. It was refreshingly authentic to see Kurdish people playing the Kurds, Arabs playing the Arabs and so on. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
