LISTEN: Vlado Nosal & The Avedons Create Experimental Simplicity on “Car”

Vlado Nosal is a singer-songwriter from Bratislava. He started his career with an alternative rock band, Queer Jane, who released three acclaimed albums and have been called “the best indie band you have never heard of.” Vlado’s knack for catchy melodies and lyrical wit led to international collaborations, including writing with The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Boo Hewerdine. Currently, Nosal is recording and touring with his backup band, The Avedons. Their sound seamlessly blends rock’n’roll history with a more experimental, lo-fi edge, all while staying true to the “songs first” attitude.

Simplicity is the key to the magical ambiance of “Car.” Nosal’s soaring falsettos fill out the space between spurts of wonky tones and off-kilter melodies. The experimental pop of the arrangement is accented by a message of longing for acceptance. The vocals convey a sense of emotional exhaustion, not that Nosal is looking for sympathy, but that he simply wants to clear his head. The imagery details long car rides and solo smoking sessions to humanize a deep feeling of loneliness. The blunt poetry of “Car” gives it all the more charm. Nosal created an experimental ballad for the lost. “Car” is a song you repeat as you drift away into deep thought.

“‘Car’ is a song that has been in my notebook for quite some time,” explains Nosal on the new single. “It was basically a folk song with weird chords when I first wrote it, so when it came to recording, I wanted to experiment a little. I recorded it in my flat, all while trying to avoid software instruments as much as possible, trying to create unique sounds using not only analog synths but approaching my guitar playing in an unconventional way. In the end, it became this track that had as much to do with Lucinda Williams as it had with Television and Wu-Tang Clan.”
