A former U.S. Civil War era Arsenal from 1864 to 1903, Arsenal Technical High School opened as a public high school in 1912. While other buildings were built on the 76-acre campus to complete the school’s “university-like” setting, the old Arsenal building and barracks are still in use to accommodate classrooms and other educational functions.
Because of its history and significance, Arsenal Tech was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
Today, the school continues to function as a public high school for students in Grades 9-12 in the IPS district and beyond. Tech (as it is affectionately called) is one of four IPS All-Choice High Schools offering a diverse and challenging curriculum.
As the largest high school in the IPS district, Tech specializes in five College and Career Academies: Law & Public Safety; Media Arts; Skill Trades and Human Services (a plethora of career-based options: culinary, cosmetology, welding, etc); STEM; and Teaching, Leading, and Learning. All freshmen participate in an extremely well-supported Freshman Academy in Stuart Hall with designated administrators, counselors, and social workers to specifically support freshman students.
