Introduction Hook/Attention Grabber (a vivid image, a question, an unusual fact, a quote, or a comparison): Insecurity exposes us to being vulnerable. Background Details (who, what, where, when, why) : Being insecure and exposed to being vulnerable is something that Bernice, Emily, and the girl child all have in common. Thesis (Topic + Your Opinion + Reasons) : The three pieces of literature Bernice Bobs Her Hair by F. Scott Fitzgerald, A Rose For Emily by William Faulkner, and Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy don't fit in with the romantic ideals of the era. Each of the main protagonists is insecure , vulnerable , and ultimately has an unhappy romantic life. Body Paragraphs Body Paragraph I Topic Sentence: In all three pieces of literature the main protagonists Bernice, Emily and the girl child made insecure by hurtful comments. 1st Supporting Fact/Example: "When you go home you've got to have your teeth straightened until then just smile with your mouth closed" (F. Scott Fitzgerald, Bernice Bobs Her Hair). 2nd Supporting Fact/ Example: " I don't want any more of your moods" (William Faulkner, A Rose For Emily). 3rd Supporting Fact/ Example. " Then in the magic of puberty, a classmate said/ You have a great big nose and fat legs"( Piercy, lines 5 - 6). End or Transition Idea: These comments led to all the protagonists becoming insecure. Therefore in the end they became vulnerable. Body Paragraph II
Topic Sentence: Bernice, Emily , and the girl child all fell prey because they had become vulnerable due to their insecurities. 1st Supporting Fact/ Example: "If you tell me what it is that I do wrong I'll see what I can do" (F. Scott Fitz Gerald, Bernice Bobs Her Hair). 2nd Supporting Fact/ Example: "Miss Emily had become a tragic focal point now hopelessly and disastrously compromised" ( William Faulkner, A Rose For Emily). 3rd Supporting Fact/ Example: "She was advised to play coy/ exhorted to come on hearty,/ exercise, diet, smile, and wheedle./ Her good nature wore out like a fan belt./ So she cut off her nose and her legs/ and offered them up" ( Piercy lines 12 - 18). End or Transition Idea: These examples show that Bernice, Emily, and the girl child fell prey to their insecurities and viewed themselves as something was wrong with them when nothing was. Body Paragraph III Topic Sentence: The three main protagonists insecurities and vulnerability they exposed themselves to led to an unhappy romantic life. 1st Supporting Fact/Example: "Yeah definitely Bernice it looks fine" ( F. Scott Fitzgerald, Bernice Bobs Her Hair). 2nd Supporting Fact/ Example: "Home Baron finished laying the sidewalk and deserted" (William Faulkner, A Rose For Emily). 3rd Supporting Fact/Example: "In the casket displayed on satin she lay/ with the undertaker's cosmetics painted on/ a turned - up putty nose, / dressed in a pink and white nightie./ Doesn't she look pretty? Everyone said./ Consummation at last./ To every woman a happy ending" (Piercy lines 19 - 25).
End or Transition Idea: All three main protagonists faced insecurities that exposed them to becoming vulnerable. That led them to have unhappy romantic lives. Conclusion Restate thesis (different words or different order):In Bernice Bobs, A Rose For Emily, and Barbie Doll they don't fit in with the romantic ideas of the era due to the fact that all three of the main protagonists are faced with insecurities which exposes them to vulnerability. Restate/summarize main body points: In all three pieces of literature the main protagonists Bernice, Emily and the girl child were insecure. They were made insecure by hurtful comments which exposed them to becoming vulnerable. This led them to fall prey and ultimately have an unhappy romantic life. Final Thoughts/ Significance/ Reflection: All three main protagonists from Bernice Bobs Her Hair, A Rose For Emily, and Barbie Doll were all similar in the way that they were insecure. This led them to become vulnerable and fall prey. Bernice fell prey to what her cousin was telling her and allowed her to influence her and change her into someone she wasn't when it was completely unnecessary. In Emily's case she was so fragile that after Homer Baron left her she eventually cut herself off from the world. The girl child was so affected by the negative comments about her appearance that she allowed them to completely influence her life choices and who she became. None of them had a happy romantic life.
