The New York Times bestselling author ofHoax--"[a] rare look inside the profoundly influential" (The New Republic) Fox News--returns with an even more explosive account of the network's blatant attempts to manipulate the truth, mislead the public, and influence our elections.

Following Joe Biden's unequivocal victory against Donald Trump in the 2020 election, Fox News anchors started to panic. They swapped out the truth about Biden for lies about Trump, and their stories about voting irregularities and "rigged" systems fueled a fire of misinformation, hate, and even violence.

In the wake of Fox's historic $787 million Dominion settlement, and with the 2024 election rapidly approaching, Fox is in hot water--and it's only getting hotter. With the lawsuits dragging the network's shameful secrets into the light--such as Tucker Carlson's passionate hatred for Donald Trump and Sean Hannity's contempt for own colleagues--the future of the network, and the Republican Party, hangs in the balance.

Featuring Brian Stelter's signature "thorough and damning" (
The New York Times) investigative prowess and filled with outrageous behind-the-scenes details, Network of Lies is a page-turning, urgent examination of the insidious ways the media is damaging our democracy--and what we must do to preserve it.

I think anyone with critical thinking sees clearly when they watch Fox News the blatant lies and constant effort to keep their viewers in a constant state of either anger or fear. And while right wing routinely accuses MSM such as CNN as ‘Clinton News Network.. Fox News was in real time unabashedly the state media for trump and maga .. this book pulls back the curtain on the inner workings of Fox and confirms that the final product we see everyday is born out of an agenda to keep their veiwers in an alternate reality much to to the detriment of our ability to come together and agree on reality .. well worth reading

A deep dive into the weeds that were and are Fox News. Fascinating to actually read the Fox emails that many people never read and ones that certainly no Fox viewer ever was exposed to. The idea that virtually every host knew very well that the election was fair and that Dominion had done nothing wrong is really amazing. How could anyone trust a company who admitted to stroking the heads of their viewers and giving them what they want, regardless of they are peddling lies or not.

The book does go a bit far with some snide remarks about Tucker Carlson. Most of the remarks were certainly earned by the bow tie, but it seemed to bog down the read and go slightly overboard with the enthusiasm and vigor in detailing the demise of Carlson and somewhat detracts from the main thrust of the piece that it was Fox as a whole that systematically lied for ratings, not just Tuck.

The book is divided into four parts. Part one travels back in time to the creation of Rupert’s media empire. A good part of this section discusses Carlson and Murdoch, and the operations of the media empire.

Part two discusses the Dominion revelations to reconstruct November and December of 2020. Here we see how the correct call for Arizona by the election desk didn’t go over well for those who made the correct decision. Really, didn’t any of Fox’s viewers want the truth? Those who defended their “correct decisions” got clobbered by the base. One “became a target of murderous rage from consumers who were furious at not having their views confirmed.” Fox was being confronted with a new paradigm, according to the author: “They don’t trust us anymore because this time we didn’t lie.” We eventually reach a point where few Trump voters considered Biden the legitimate 2020 election winner. The frustration of the Fox host was tangible. There is much to unpack in this section. I will leave it to the reader to fathom it all.

Part three covers the failed coup and the first two years of the Biden administration. We see how just one week after the January 6 event, things started to be reframed. It was no longer a coup attempt, but a conspiracy against conservatives. The danger in promoting falsehoods is that it inspires “people who are already prone to, or have a propensity for violence, to commit violence,” according to Michael Fanone. An interesting point made is that when cable news wars began back in the 90’s, the channels were more alike that they were apart. By the early 2020’s, they no longer covered the same topics. As the author notes, “it was a serious transformation, a symptom of a country coming apart, a country full of people unable to see what they have in common while they stare at screens that separate them further.” It became obvious that as Trey Gowdy said, “Fox has much more influence over Republican primary voters that anyone who’s elected.”

Part four explores what Dominion learned by deposing Rupert. A lot of material is covered here. Read the book to get all the minutia. In the end, it is as disinformation researcher Caroline Bueno said, the payout “is essential a lying tax – for them, it’s just the cost of doing business.” The disinformation system works quite well. A New York Times and Siena College poll showed that 91 percent of the people who rely on Fox for information said they did not believe Trump committed any serious crimes. Many news viewers today want anger/resentment confirmation. We shouldn’t serve it up to them. As Jeh Johnson said, “More and more Americans are becoming detached from reality. More and more Americans are becoming prone to violence.”

This a well written and well researched book about Fox News and what makes it tick. It had an insiders point of view about the internal workings of a network responsible for dividing our nation. A real page turner!

This is an important book that sets out to explain some of the confusion and nonsense of our recent political life. For many, the role of Fox in lowering our collective intelligence is already well known. The author adds additional facts to this story, while emphasizing that the network is, first and last, a profitable business--and that everything it does is driven by financial decisions, rather than old-fashioned notions about truth or the public good. The author has had years of experience with Fox and its leading personalities, and he exhibits more than a few hints of snarky glee at his subject's numerous scandals and face-plants. This attitude takes nothing away from the objectivity of his narrative. In fact, it helps create a page-turning account of what is, in truth, a story of colossal dishonesty and cynicism.

I wasn’t a fan of Stelter until I read this book. He does a great job of weaving a biography of Tucker Carlson into the drama behind the Dominion lawsuit. His conclusion about Tucker’s firing by the Fox Network seems spot on.

And the notes about counteracting Fox in the epilogue are truly upsetting in their smallness. Nonetheless, I suppose someone should keep an eye on the drunk drivers over there at Fox. Thanks to Brian Stelter for doing so.

I learned a lot from Stelter's analysis and insights and appreciated his distillation of the enormous legal documentation stemming from Fox's first 2020 election-related defamation lawsuit. He offers significant historical context and owns up to his role as a "player" in this drama. If you're not someone who digs into and parses the details or seeks to elicit all the connections, you may not enjoy this book as much as I did.

As a coda: many "reviews" offered here leave the strong impression that their writers care more about tanking the book's overall ratings than they do offering reasoned critique for people considering purchasing and reading the book. If "red-blue/who's winning" is your goal, why not skip the written review part and just vote your partisan leanings with star ratings? It would save both of us time. ;-)

We already know the truth, that Fox is anti democratic and peddles lies to trigger fears. They are a political channel in favor of right wing supremecist policy instead of equality. Every page proves this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A blow-by-blow account of Fox News during the period 2020-2023
Reviewed in Germany on December 1, 2023
Brian Stelter provides a blow-by-blow account of what on inside Fox News during the critical period from 2020 - late 2023. He was able to take advantage of the internal Fox material that was released as a result of the Dominion lawsuit and the investigation of the January 6th committee. Although much had already appeared in news accounts, the account in this book provides significant additional details. In addition, it puts everything conveniently together in an easily understood timeline. The focus is on the leadup to the 2020 election, the events leading to January 6th, and the defenestration of Tucker Carlson. Remarkably, the book is able to include and explain events that occurred just a few weeks before publication.
