Network of Lies: The Epic Saga of Fox News, Donald Trump, and the Battle for American Democracy Audio CD – Unabridged, November 14, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Following Joe Biden's unequivocal victory against Donald Trump in the 2020 election, Fox News anchors started to panic. They swapped out the truth about Biden for lies about Trump, and their stories about voting irregularities and "rigged" systems fueled a fire of misinformation, hate, and even violence.
In the wake of Fox's historic $787 million Dominion settlement, and with the 2024 election rapidly approaching, Fox is in hot water--and it's only getting hotter. With the lawsuits dragging the network's shameful secrets into the light--such as Tucker Carlson's passionate hatred for Donald Trump and Sean Hannity's contempt for own colleagues--the future of the network, and the Republican Party, hangs in the balance.
Featuring Brian Stelter's signature "thorough and damning" (The New York Times) investigative prowess and filled with outrageous behind-the-scenes details, Network of Lies is a page-turning, urgent examination of the insidious ways the media is damaging our democracy--and what we must do to preserve it.

The book does go a bit far with some snide remarks about Tucker Carlson. Most of the remarks were certainly earned by the bow tie, but it seemed to bog down the read and go slightly overboard with the enthusiasm and vigor in detailing the demise of Carlson and somewhat detracts from the main thrust of the piece that it was Fox as a whole that systematically lied for ratings, not just Tuck.
Part two discusses the Dominion revelations to reconstruct November and December of 2020. Here we see how the correct call for Arizona by the election desk didn’t go over well for those who made the correct decision. Really, didn’t any of Fox’s viewers want the truth? Those who defended their “correct decisions” got clobbered by the base. One “became a target of murderous rage from consumers who were furious at not having their views confirmed.” Fox was being confronted with a new paradigm, according to the author: “They don’t trust us anymore because this time we didn’t lie.” We eventually reach a point where few Trump voters considered Biden the legitimate 2020 election winner. The frustration of the Fox host was tangible. There is much to unpack in this section. I will leave it to the reader to fathom it all.
Part three covers the failed coup and the first two years of the Biden administration. We see how just one week after the January 6 event, things started to be reframed. It was no longer a coup attempt, but a conspiracy against conservatives. The danger in promoting falsehoods is that it inspires “people who are already prone to, or have a propensity for violence, to commit violence,” according to Michael Fanone. An interesting point made is that when cable news wars began back in the 90’s, the channels were more alike that they were apart. By the early 2020’s, they no longer covered the same topics. As the author notes, “it was a serious transformation, a symptom of a country coming apart, a country full of people unable to see what they have in common while they stare at screens that separate them further.” It became obvious that as Trey Gowdy said, “Fox has much more influence over Republican primary voters that anyone who’s elected.”
Part four explores what Dominion learned by deposing Rupert. A lot of material is covered here. Read the book to get all the minutia. In the end, it is as disinformation researcher Caroline Bueno said, the payout “is essential a lying tax – for them, it’s just the cost of doing business.” The disinformation system works quite well. A New York Times and Siena College poll showed that 91 percent of the people who rely on Fox for information said they did not believe Trump committed any serious crimes. Many news viewers today want anger/resentment confirmation. We shouldn’t serve it up to them. As Jeh Johnson said, “More and more Americans are becoming detached from reality. More and more Americans are becoming prone to violence.”
As a coda: many "reviews" offered here leave the strong impression that their writers care more about tanking the book's overall ratings than they do offering reasoned critique for people considering purchasing and reading the book. If "red-blue/who's winning" is your goal, why not skip the written review part and just vote your partisan leanings with star ratings? It would save both of us time. ;-)
