In my opinion went soft and fluffy on reviews. Started treating everything with kid gloves. That one edgy FIFA review a while back was only noteworthy cause they’ve developed a habit of giving anything that runs a 7. They used to actually you know critique things.

Remember that time IGN just copied this dudes game review and tried to pass it off as their own work? I member.....

And they immediately fired him as a result, which is the respectable thing to do

It wasn't "IGN copied someone," it was "writer at IGN copied someone"... big difference

No they tried to defend the review/er

"IGN has fired the writer responsible for the outlet’s now-deleted Dead Cells review, calling it “simply not acceptable” and apologizing to the YouTuber whose work was plagiarized. This announcement has brought a swift conclusion to the controversy surrounding Filip Miucin’s review of the game, which closely mimicked a video posted by Boomstick Gaming, with the company now “taking steps” to adequately compensate the YouTuber." - GameRevolution

They investigated (which isn't defending him, that's just them doing their due diligence) and fired him incredibly quickly. Miucin then went onto his personal YouTube channel to try to paint IGN as slave drivers that encouraged him to plagiarize due to "unfair working conditions" or whatever... yeah those claims didn't go well. They even seemingly took steps to pay that channel that got plagiarized

Edited

Only after they tried to defend the review after it gained lots of attention, it took a lot the OG reviewer posting and the backlash it created for them to do anything it was not ‘hey one of your guys stole my review’ ‘well get right on that’

“"I would like to be cited, collaborated with, and compensated for the healthy ad revenue they pulled in on both their written review and video review," Boomstick Gaming told The Verge .

Shortly after Boomstick Gaming's video went up, Reddit and other forums picked up on it and IGN pulled the written and video reviews from the site. A new post titled "Dead Cells Review - Removed" had an editor's note updating readers on the accusation.”

Nothing was done until after social media backlash

They are way too nice in their reviews. Everything's a 7 or 8. A mediocre game is not a 7. If you think of a movie with IMDb score 7 you know it's usually really good. A 7 game is usually meh, so why is it so high?

u/Jinchuriki71 avatar

I mean as long as it works and shit it will probably get a 7. If don't go lower unless the game is broken or they just hate the game.

u/PinkSploosh avatar

That's exactly the problem...

They give rushed, surface level reviews. Written by people who dont actually play games for enjoyment. Spammed with ads. Titled more clickbait-y than buzzfeed.

IGN gave BF2042 a 7/10 at launch soooooooooo

Only thing I hate is there bloody website Sooooo many ads. When opening on website on mobile there's like 30 pop ups.

u/Armitaco avatar

Idk but I noticed last year that IGN was continually re-positing old articles and reviews to FB and it was so frequent I had to unfollow them. Like I’d be seeing a ratchet & clank rift apart review pop up in December, it was so annoying

Because there are far better youtube channels that review games and things relating to gaming far better than IGN currently does.

People like ACG, are literally providing the original style of actual honest reviews that IGN used to, starting back in the late 90's and doing so with minimal investment required with practically zero staff. Adn because such channels reviewing games by buying these games with their own money and not relying on early review copies, its less fluff and more facts.

IGN is just "safe". And thats a testament to becoming more corporatized than they used to be when they were a fledgling website with a few venture capitalists letting them do whatever it takes.

I don't really hate them, but someone on their social media department really loves to spam news and just dumb shit about Disney properties most of the time and it gets really annoying for me, but that's also every dumb news site that tries to stay relevant, it's always the same, "X actor/actress improvised this moment in this Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar movie/show", "X Disney property will be released on Y month", "random collectible crap", "Doctor Strange, and other famous mainstream character is in Fortnite", "random stupid fact that everyone knows already or no one cares" and so on, and it really feels to me, that they have become a shitpost site and their socials is even worse.

also, because of the my main point here, it feels like their reviews towards those properties mentioned above, are biased. Is either that, or Disney has already burned their annoying style in everyone's brains, and no one can review positively something that doesn't fit their style.

I think it's because you have a million independent reviewers doing a better job than them with no help or money. So I'd advocate using one of them instead. ACG does a good serious review. GMAN LIVES has done some in a comical light. Idk just examples

Because Sydney Goodman left.

First Naomi Kyle, then Sydney Goodman.

Actually, the argument can be whatever the person wants to say as their argument. Sure it might be a bad argument, but who are you to try and tell someone else what they can and can't say? Just wondering.

Saying ‘bc they are game journalists and game journalists are bad’ is literally not an argument. That’s why.

Actually, it really is an argument. It's just a bad one.

u/gameg805 avatar

That is exactly what I said. It is indeed an argument but not a good one.

The last reply you literally said it's not an argument lol. Now you're just contradicting yourself.

Remember when IGN gave God Hand, one of the best 3d brawlers ever made, a review score of 3.4? Pepperidge Farm remembers

Because their reviews are worthless for anything other than seeing gameplay. Their review scores are notoriously high for everything they produce. It’s hard to be objective about the legitimacy of what they’re saying when 90% of their reviews are 70% or higher. They don’t go deep enough and are too soft in my opinion. I’m not watching a review because I want it to be good and will get mad at the reviewer if it isn’t, I’m watching a review to see a critical overview of the game. I want to know what’s wrong with the game if anything.

I will never forgive their God Hand review

u/justpassinthrumate avatar

Because they give games like the assassins creed series a 9/10

"game sucks horsedick" 10/10
