You were always one of my favorites. I watched you on Nightstalker when I was a kid. No one else could have played Ralphie´s dad in a Christmas Story but you. You live on every Christmas for 24 hours during the marathon. Thanks for the fun

Darren McGavin was truly great, not because he was great actor so much as that he was a great person. My personal favorite was "The Outsider," which nobody else seems to have seen, but which was an outstanding PI series. But McGavin's charm and personality made him one of the most enduring people in Hollywood. Best wishes to your family, Mr. McGavin

One of the very first television shows I remeber as a boy was a show called "The Night Stalker" were Mr. McGavin played a newspaper reporter and was really great in the role. My favorite episode was were he was in the Seattle underground and was after I theink it was Jack the ripper.
Mr. McGavin was one of the worlds most gifted actors and a very honorable man.
I salute and respect him as both a gentleman first and an actor second. No one else could of done such a great job as Carl Klochak as Mr. McGavin.

This is incredible we had just put in A Christmas Story and decided to go on line to see what else Mr. McGavin had been in as we were having a discussion of a TV Series. This film will live forever as it reminds us all of our childhood. We would like to offer our condolences and we will forever remember his talent when we watch this the best Christmas Movie ever. I have watched A Christmas Story every year since i was a boy. I am know 30 and married with 2 boys ages 9 and 1. My point is this Mr. Mcgavin gave me something to look foward to every tear aruond Christmas cause A Christmas Story came on almost every day in December. Now i can share this with my 2 sons.

I have always been a big fan of his work. I enjoyed all of his television series and movies.

Well, Darren, it's been a year and it seems really strange not to have you around anymore...you were such a big presence on the screen! I can't say that about many actors, just special ones. I finally saw all the Kolchak episodes, and did it bring memories back! You are really missed.

One day I was wondering about the High School I had graduated from...and there was Darren McGavin saying that he too had graduated from Galt High School. I went to school that day and yes there he was...his picture amongst others... I thought that perhaps my High School was a good place...it had help produce Darren McGavin

Darren McGavin was his best on A Christmas Story, that has become such a cult favorite during Christmas that I can't get enough of that film.

I also remember watching him on the Night Stalker when I was a kid. I wouldn't miss an episode.

He will be missed.

A great charactor actor in the old style. He will be greatly missed in the world of Film and TV.

It is a sad-but-true fact that many do not receive their deserved acclaim during their mortal lives. The great scientist-inventor Nikola Tesla was one. The mysterious India mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (whose modular functions are the key to today's superstring theories) is another. And the wonderfully-gifted Darren McGavin resides here also.



I don't know how much of "The Night Stalker"'s blend of suspense, humor, and the whole range of human emotions came from the writers. But it was Mr. McGavin who made it all come to life and believable. In fact, so much so that my newspaper sports-editor father (who was a combat veteran in the South Pacific during WWII) could not help but chastise Kolchak during many of his unnerving ventures. He couldn't help himself. Mr. McGavin and his team were THAT good!



On a entertainment level, "The Night Stalker" will never be surpassed. It was so much more enjoyable to watch than its "X-Files" successor (which was much darker with less action and humor). The original Star Trek did not last long either if you recall.



More than entertaining was that it was inspirational. Whether helping someone, arguing with his editor chief, berating his co-workers, or driving the authorities crazy, "Carl Kolchak" defined what it is to be human.



Darren McGavin's life made better those of others -- even if it was only in their dreams. He was the BEST! His spirit lives in all us Kolchak-wannabes.

Darren was my favorite actor. He was a loveable gruff character of many talents. "Christmas Story" is a must at our house every year. He was also a loveable slob as Kolchak in the 'Night Stalker' Series which I watch religeously whenever it is presented in reruns. You are sorely missed and remain in our thoughts!!

Darren...I will never forget directing you in the TV Movie "The Night Stalker". You were a fine actor and a joy to work with. My heartfelt sympathies go out to all his remaing family.

Mr. McGavin was a great character actor. His average-Joe looks and cynical attitude was so natural. Loved him especially in the Nightstalker series and A Christmas Story. We will miss him.

To the family of Darren McGavin - I am so sorry for your loss. I remember watching the Kolchak shows when they first aired and then in reruns. I never tired of watching them. The Christmas Story was one of my son's favorite movies. During the Christmas season our local station would carry the movie for 24 hours non-stop and he would watch it over and over again. He probably could tell you word for word about the movie. Rest in peace.

my condolences to the family of Darren McGavin. to me, his most memorable role was the DI in Tribes. i bought a copy of the play 'The Warlord' just because i heard he had performed the role of Chrysagon and i knew if i read his lines i could hear his voice and his passion. his like shall not pass this way again.

I have been fan for many years. My uncle was a PA on No Deposit, No Return. When he brought me to the set one day,Darren could not have been nicer to me. When I think of Darren, it is always with great fondness and a sweet memory of childhood.

I also grew up enjoying many of Mr. McGavins movies and shows, such as The Night Stalker. One of my favorite movies he starred in was a movie No Deposit, No Return. Starring with him was Don Knotts and others. My condolences to Darren's family.

My family has depended on and enjoyed "A Christmas Story" for almost 20 years. With Darren as Dad, it was an alltime favorite & in this home, it will continue to be watched all day each Christmas! Sorry to hear of Mr McGavin's passing. I remember him in many movies and TV shows.. But the one that sticks in my mind is "A Christmas Story" I love that movie, Its a classic. The movie just wouldnt be the same without him.

They recently tried to redo "Nightstalker" but it could not even come close to the original. Why? Because ONLY Darren McGavin could be Kolchak. HE made that role,with that old blue suit & crazy hat and his infinite charm & wit. I still always look forward to the rerun marathons. He was a true treasure & unforgettable. I wonder if he really knew how great he was & how many people loved him. Well, if he didn't already know, he knows now. So I guess now instead of chasing those Vampires around, he's driving those Angels crazy. My heartfelt sympathy to his family & all those who loved him.

I was sorry to hear of your father's passing. He was a great actor and I'm sure a great father. My brother and I loved the "Night Stalker" and sometimes when I see that it is on on the SciFi Channel, I will stop what I'm doing and watch it because it was so great and he was so perfect for the role. Of course, there was "The Christmas Story" which, it seems from reading other entries, was our family's favorite, too. Still is. I live for Christmas Eve when it starts the 24 hour rotation on tv. I think he should of won an Academy Award for the role!!!! He will be missed, but I guess he's in a better place now. My condolences to the McGavin family.

I truly loved this man. Even as a child I recognized his unique gift of truly BEING a character, instead of simply acting. I grew up with his wonderful Kolchak shows, and then later admired EVERY work he ever made, culminating in the classic Christmas Story. He was a true hero, in a world bereft of heros.

Some rare people are truly irreplaceable, and he was one of them. He will be sadly missed.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of such a fine, entertaining actor. We loved him in "Nightstalker", "Murphy Brown" and who can forget "A Christmas Story". He has given much joy to not only my generation but my chidren's generation as well. My oldest daughter (22) owns the DVD of "A Christmas Story" and watches it whenever it is on t.v. as well. It is her favorite Christmas movie.

We all thoroughly enjoy the Christmas dinner scene and often joke about doing the same thing ourselves. Thank you Mr. McGaven for bringing joy and laughter to this world and Thank you to your family for sharing you.

FA RA RA RA RA - RA RA RA RA.

I first noticed Mr. McGavin in Riverboat when I was very young, but the most impressive memory I have of him was a t.v. show which may have been an episode of a series. It was called something like "The Invasion of Kevin Ireland" and involved a man whose life had been destroyed by what we now call identity theft. After that, I had the biggest "crush" on him, and watched everything I could of his. Night Stalker was so classic, and I can think of no show in which I saw him where he was less than brilliant. I wish I could have known him in real life. My deepest condolences to the McGavin family...you must be so proud of him!

I remember Mr. McGavin in Kolchak. I believe it was one of the first series of its kind. I was sorry when it went off the air, I liked Mr. McGavin in the role. My heart goes out to his children and all who loved him dearly. Go to Our Heavenly father on those difficult days when you miss him most. (Psalms 55:22)

Hollywood will never be the same. Even today, it can't compare. I remember waching "Riverboat" How I loved it.

What a great actor many remember him in the night staker the role which a lot of fans do not remember him in was the movie of a crafty drug dealer in the man with the golden arm.will be missed

Darren McGavin was one of the most charming men I ever met in my life. In 1993, when we were pitching a movie together, he gave me some of the then-best advice of my agenting life: "Timmy, stay away from water!" He and Cathy and I had attended the CORE dinner in New York together, and I was trying to make a film of my friend Dan Lynch's "Yellow," which involved scenes in Cuba's bays, an expensive proposition at the time. Darren wanted to play the role of Frederick Remington, a male lead, and the book was a hit. But the water scenes were going to be expensive, and we would have to shoot them in Sicily. We didn't get a green light, sadly. And Darren was right in his comment about the water. The next year, to our chagrin, Waterworld was made. We were heartbroken.

Darren McGavin's sense of humor, his essence, his intelligence, were supreme. When he lost Cathy, life changed for the sadder.

I will miss Darren. He was the last of the real men in Hollywood.

You were incredibly funny in night stalker. You had a funny walk that made me laugh just looking at you. You were also wonderful in "A Christmas Story". You will be greatly missed!

I never missed an episode of "Kolchak" during it's prime-time run. You played him to the hilt!
