Hopkins has changed so much since I was a student there, and all in positive ways. Teachers are more willing to work with students when they are overwhelmed. Extra help was always part of the experience, but now there are homework limits (which teachers actually adhere to for the most part) as well as extensions and second chances for major assessments like tests and sometimes even essays. My child feels safe and surrounded by people who care about his well-being and academic life. The expectations are definitely high but these changes have made a huge quality of life difference at the school.
If your kid likes learning and doesn’t mind working hard, Hopkins is an incredible place. Kids learn to write well, to speak well, and to think deeply and clearly. Afterschool sports or theater are mandatory, then 3 hours of homework. I’ve heard from a couple of grads that going to Yale afterward was easier. So your kid needs to be up for this. It’s more supportive than competitive, but standards set by classmates are high. Classes are small (12 max) and teachers make themselves available for questions or extra help, and are flexible about extensions. There’s a math lab, peer tutoring, and teacher tutoring for kids who want or need it. Check out classes like HARPS (summer research with a college prof) and 21st Century Democracy (volunteer on a campaign). Sports teams are a mixed bag, some very successful and some with great esprit de corps. Theater is incredible. The student body is more diverse than other prep schools, and friend groups are racially mixed. Clubs and food are great.
The experience of my 7th grade boy at Hopkins has been better than I expected. I did not know, for instance, that kids can stay on campus late, and enjoy the library, athletic centers, and friendships. His work is hard, but productive. For instance, by midyear, the English classes have already completed three books, and done many other things. Also, the parent communication is excellent, and there are many fun activities and opportunities that kids can enjoy. My son loves sports, and has had a great time being a part of a team in soccer and swim. The athletics are not too intense, and very positive. Many parents come out to watch the games. Kids are great teammates, and no one is expected to be a "star" in seventh grade.
All students take Latin, and the second language is optional. The work is very fast-paced. Perhaps the most challenging part of Hopkins has been helping my child get organized to do homework, and to study. But the school is extremely motivating for him!
