Charli XCX has confirmed the rumors that she was writing music for Britney Spears‘ next album — even after the Queen of Pop denied having “random people” write her songs.

On Monday night’s (May 6) episode of Watch What Happens Live, Charli XCX initially attempted to play coy when a virtual fan asked her if there was any truth to the rumors that she was working on Spears’ next album. “Um … So … Yes?” she said with a shrug.

However, her plans were seemingly halted when Spears took to Instagram to slam the “trash” news.

“It leaked to the press. Britney then did this post where she was like, ‘I don’t have random people write for me,'” Charli XCX explained on the After Show. “And I was like, ‘Oh. OK. Go off.’ So I don’t know that she was a part of the process.”

She continued, “Her team were running before they could walk. Britney probably has a lot of other projects that she’s focusing on. So I did get asked but I don’t know if it’s real.”

According to the pop star, she flew out to Malibu, CA to write songs with Spears’ team.

“The team were present … But she didn’t record it. She obviously didn’t,” Charli XCX noted as she pointed to herself and said, “Random.”

However, there were no hard feelings as the “Boom Clap” singer insisted that she “loved” Spears and said it “would be a dream come true” to have her record her songs.

With Spears’ team eager to hard-launch the “Baby One More Time” songstress back into the music industry, rumors claiming they had hired Charli XCX to write her next album (which would also be her first album post-conservatorship) began swirling. When Spears caught wind of the gossip, she let out her frustrations in a since-deleted Instagram post.

“Just so we’re clear most of the news is trash !!!,” she wrote, per StereoGum. “They keep saying I’m turning to random people to do a new album … I will never return to the music industry !!!”

Spears continued, “When I write, I write for fun or I write for other people !!! For those of you who have read my book, there’s loads that you don’t know about me … I’ve written over 20 songs for other people the past two years !!! I’m a ghostwriter and I honestly enjoy it that way !!!”

Here’s hoping these two artists can, at the very least, collaborate someday!
